I went into DSS (9yrs old) room today to open the blinds and found this note on the floor in the corner beside his desk/wall & blinds........its very worrying......

"I am a big STUPID, Fat IDIOT. Thats low leveled at school, sux hard core at reading and is lazy. I HATE MYSELF! from {name} "

He seems his normal happy content self...and at the last parent teacher evening (although that was last year...this year's one is coming up soon) the teacher said he was in the top 5 of his class and his reading is good, he can read well (but he never wants to read tho) he was actually helping another child learn to read better last year through a paired reading program in his class.  This year he is in a class with a mix of Year 5 & Year 6 kids - he is year 5 so wouldn't that mean that he is doing well to be mixed in with a class of older kids...???

Last year he was being bullied - being teased and made fun off - he does have very long hair, never been cut and due to this looks like a girl, and this is something he keeps being teased about especially when he takes it out of his plait which he likes to do (he is 1/2 rarotongan on his mothers side and his grandmother wants to do a big hair cutting ceremony but keeps delaying it...), he told me in the last week of school....he said he had told his teacher and she had told him that she doesn't have time for it..???  WTF we were soo mad!   So DP phoned up the principal and complained and the teacher didn't remember any of it.....but the children that DSS said was bullying him the teacher has had problems with and will keep a closer eye on DSS in class......and we made sure he wasn't in the same class as the people bullying him this year....

We have asked him since school started if he has been bullied, he said he hasn't been...

But this note is worrying....when DP comes home we are going to sit down with him and discuss why he wrote it, how he is feeling etc.....

Is this normal behaviour for a 9 year old child?? Is it just teenage angst happening sooner than normal or something???

Anyone had similar situations????

i dont have a 9 yr old but wanted to say it reminded me of a tv show i had seen where they found a note that sounded suicidal and it turned out to be a homework assignment...

it does sound similar to some of the stuff i might have wrote or thought about when i was at school...

im not saying that your son is depressed but i reckon i was depressed at 9years old. I didnt get diagnosed untl i was 13 but it was definately there at 9 i just didnt know what it was. I would talk to him about it - but keep in mind that he may not understand how he's feeling. I had no reason that i could ork out to be depressed which was why i didnt tell anyone for so long becasue it didnt make sense to me. Hope the chat with him goes well. Good Luck

Are you sure the note was written recently? All the best for the talk, it does sound scary!

Hi There. I have an 8yr old DD, and she sometimes writes little notes like that too, but she's not depressed or anything like that, she just had a bad day at school usually. It can be quite disturbing when you first find them, but it seems to be quite normal for this age group. I would not mention it to your DSS just yet, as he may feel like you were snooping around his room (i'm not impliying you were but kids look at things differently)

Maybe have a chat to his teacher about his general mood at school, and just keep an eye on him.

I'm sure it'll just be 'vent' from a bad day at school, and not depression.

(FYI - kids can get depression and very young too, my DD was diagnosed with Depression at 4, but is now fine, Thank goodness!)
