My Cousin is deciding to have an elective as she sees it as "easier" than labour (to be fair she did have a third degree tear and broke her tailbone). I don't think it is true, but I was just wondering from the people who did have electives did they find it easier than labour? (time, recovery, etc)
After my emergency c-section with this one I will definately try for a VBAC but I am just curious cause I didn't find my C easy at all.

Well I have to say that if I had a 3rd degree tear and broke my tail bone I would have an elective c/s as well next time around.
I had an elective with my first (he was breech) and a vontouse delivery with my 2nd. I found the recovery with my first harder but not that much harder than my vontouse delivery which involved a 2nd degree internal tear and an episiotomy (ok I can't spell that word but you know what I mean). The main difference was where it hurt, and with the c/s I couldn't lift/bend/twist around and couldn't drive for longer.
I would pick a vaginal over a c/s (elective or otherwise) but I can see where you cousin is coming from because the recovery from her labour was probably far worse than most elective c/s are (unless you get an infection or other complication)

Yep my elective was easy in terms of recovery as apposed to the 51+hrs of labour then an emergency C that I had first time round.
I was out of hosp 2 days after the elective (4 days with emerg) & able to do most stuff within 2 weeks without pain (4-6 weeks after emerg)

I had a 4th degree tear after a vontuse delivery and a 9lb15 baby for my 1st. And I had an elective for my 2nd. I have found the elective a bit easier healing wise, although not being able to pick up my toddler and making sure she has been careful around my tummy has been hard.
I should mention that my tear was really bad and I was fortunate not to have reprocussions afterwards - hence the reason for choosing an elective.
I would probably choose an elective if I were your cousin as well. I have seen how much pain my mum went through with a broken tailbone and she didn't have a 3rd degree tear as well.
Have also heard from numerous people who had emergancy c-sections and then went on and had an elective for the next one that they healed alot better and faster after their elective.

I haven't had an elective yet, but will when next time comes - first time was a totally natural birth, yet I tore badly (nearly 4th degree). The gynae recommended I have an elective cos there's a 1 in 3 risk I'll tear again and it will be worse and have on-going re-percussions (ie crapping myself and being unable to control it). I certainly don't wanna take that risk.
I found recovery from that surgery (had to go into theatre, have a spinal block etc) really hard physically. It's not easy to recover from tearing badly and getting stitched up.
Though I think that an elective c-section would be heaps easier to recover from than an emergency c-section, just cos you don't have to go through labour first and get rushed through and everything - that must take a big toll on your body.
Just had to put it out there that although I can't compare the 2 yet, recovering from a bad tear is very very painful and awful. I can't imagine having a broken tailbone on top of it.
No wonder she wants an elective, I'd be scared that would happen again too - and her gynae may have actually recommended it.

I found my elective c-section (breech) easy easy easy, and the recovery was lovely. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I personally hated my elective (although I had wanted a VBAC, but babies position ruled that out)
Healing wise, this elective has been harder, however that was more because my emergency cs left lots of scar tissue, so this op was longer and more complicated. Also with a toddler to look after this time was sooo much more a mission.
One thing I will say .. I found my elective quite a scary experience .. because you know whats going to happen (well I did, because the first was a cs).
When your in labour, you kind of have to go with the flow and your contractions keep your mind focused on getting through that one minute.
With an elective, there is nothing other than worrying about what can go wrong (after all it IS surgery) to contend with.

I had an emergency C with my second baby.
I will have an elective for the next one, I recovered really well and very quickly after my section. Specialist has suggested I have an elective as he doesn't see my dialiating past 5cm, just like my last 2 attempts at naural birth.
I will have a date and time for my 3rd baby

I wanted a c/section because I thought it would be easier. I mean whats easier than laying there watching someone else do all the work lol also I felt I had more control. My sister did it with her twins for the same reason.
I agree with Lulu I found it so easy, stressfree and the recovery was great. I haven't tried labor so can't compare but I would do a c/s again and again. My other 2 sisters did the labor thing twice each. They had no complications but their labor stories put me right off ever wanting to go down that road. All that sweating, pushing and tearing..... no thanks hehe.

I had an emergency c-sec with my first followed by 4 natural births, boths boys I had were 10lb+ at term. Im petrified of having a natural birth again on the 50/50 chance it could be a boy (they couldnt tell on scan). Midwife sent me to OB to discuss induction at 38weeks but he wont do it because of previous c-sec scar. Im now unsure if I should go with elective like OB suggested or to just harden up and go natural again. It was just so hard and painful when they were so big and afterwards they fed hourly for the first month (again because they were big) which to be honest just about drove me nuts, as in I was constantly exhausted. What is your guys opinions on it????

I had 2 VB before having to have an elective c section due to breech and this time I am going for a VBAC cause I HATED my section - more so the afterwards cause i had to buzz the nurse all the time to bring my baby to me - RHyley was very unsettled the first night we ended up putting him in bed with me.... anyhow If i didn't know any different I spose it wouldn't bother me so much but after my VB (espec 2nd) Igot up went for a shower and got to spend quality time with my baby afterwards and we both were relaxed.
But then again IF I have to have another c section so be it as more importantly is that baby gets into the world safely.
But nope don't think an elective is easier than natural - but then again i didn't break my tailbone either!

I think it totally must depend what type of natural birth you had - I couldn't get out of bed to get my baby either (and yep had to buzz every time), couldn't sit up properly to feed, had a catheter in and legs were still numb from the surgery, and in so much pain. No way was I getting up for a shower!

totally agree arohanui - thats why I left my last comment - totally depends on what your natural birth was like (if you had one) what is best for you is something only you and your OB (LMP) can decide.

I had a emergency c section, and it was a horrible experience, I had a lot of issues afterwards and my recovery was awful took me a good 6 weeks to come right.
This time, I am trying a VBAC first, but if I get to 41 weeks I will have an elective c section, and that thought scares me more than a vaginal birth.
C sections are major surgery! So even an elective, IMO is not gonna be a walk in the park.

I was induced at 16days over due and ended up having a c section at 17days due to various complications inlcuding the fact I didnt make it past 7cms dialated (started going backwards lol) and Hayden's head was a bad fit for my pelvis. I found the recovery quite easy, got up the next day for a shower with a little help and by 2 days after was getting around by myself albeit slowly :) But a large part of me still wants to try for a VBAC for any future babies, then the other part of me thinks Are You Mad??? LOL
If I were your cousin I'd go for a c section too, if I dont go into labour naturally (which I didnt with Hayden) I think I would go for an elective c section as my recovery was easy and the thought of being induced and labouring for days with nothing happening / worry etc would definately push me down the c section route.

it really does depend on the individual......on all points we are talking about lol i can't say which is easier as i've only had c/s, but if i was your cousin, i'd probably think a c/s would be easier for her too!
i've had an elective and emergency c/s unfortunately and if i could, i'd choose a vbac still but only so i could experience it all. but that's never gonna happen....i digress....lol
my 1st c/s was elective and that was easy. it was scary, but i think that was more to do with becoming a mum than having an op! the recovery was really quick, up and walking that night, showering that morning and moving house 5days after
my emergency c/s (after 9hrs labour) recovery was extremely quick given the fact they tore my uterine wall trying to get her out, lost 3ltrs of blood and had a catheter for 3days. was still up and about the following day and home on day 5. was feeling back to normal about 2wks after. i think i'm just a quick healer.
the only thing i hate about my c/s was how drugged up i was afterwards. i can't remember those first few hours after the birth, people visiting for the first time etc and that bugs me! also having to get help to feed bubs all the time because you can't get out of bed to get them, not doing the first bath etc
geez..i can't even remember what the question was now!

it sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into an elective hun! if you are anxious and scared to go natural again, then maybe an elective is best for you.....10lbs+ i'm not surprised!!! lol
but in saying that, feeding hourly would be very difficult if you can't get bubs up yourself and extremely exhausting while trying to recover from surgery as well.......
all the best with YOUR decision

Hey Sheza, you will be fine, you can do it (c/s or natural). They really won't let things get to the stage they did with Caden, so either way the experience will be less scary.
I had the shakes before my c/s, not sure if I was more scared of the surgery or having a baby...lol

The OB said the same thing, they wont let it go like cadens did. So thats comforting for sure.

I feel quite lucky, I healed very quickly from my section. I wouldnt really call mine an emergency.. Yes they had to get him out as they had interfered too much and his heart rate was dropping and my cervix was swelling and he was swimming backwards (completely disengaged by the time they got him out, his head was out of my pelvis!). But once they stopped the syntocinin I didnt need in the first place his heart rate leveled out so it was about 2 hours after the call was made before he was delivered. Mind you the fact that it took them 30 minutes to get my second line could have had something to do with why it took so long!
What I found hard was the drawn out induction. I wont be going down that road again.. its VBAC naturally or elective if overdue or PE again.
