Just curious, how soon after birth did you introduce a dummy to your child?
I was told to wait 6 weeks after DD and I did (being a new mum and all) but she so could have had it sooner because she was a comfort sucker. I have already purchased dummies this time around and just curious to see how soon your child accepted one or when you first offered it? TIA! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I packed one in the hospital bag! Ashlee was a comfort sucker too, right from day one so I wanted to be prepared for Madison. So on the first night, it was used  She wasn't good at it (I had to hold it in at times) but I think I might have gone insane with sleep deprivation if I didn't use it. We hardly get it out at all now because I didn't want to fall into the trap of relying on it for her to get to sleep and having to get up at multiple times a night to put it back in. But it was absolutely brilliant to use once my milk had come in and my nipples had all toughened up.
If you need to use one, use it. And don't feel bad, like I did!!! It's totally a personal choice and drives me nuts that there's such a stigma around it. |

I gave Daniel one as soon as we got home from hospital as he just wanted to be on the boob all the time. In saying that though we weren't successful at breastfeeding so I don't know if introducing the dummy gave him nipple confusion? We gave DS one when he was about a week old. We couldn't get him to settle, at that sorted him right out.It turned out the reason he was crying so much was that the poor guy had a broken collar bone (from being born). He did get quite attached to it, but I found it really easy to weab him off it at 4-5months.
I say if it helps and keeps you sane go for it. I will definately be having one to use this time if needed. -------------

I didn't for the five days we were in hospital because I honestly didn't think about it. But as soon as we got home on day 6 we gave them the dummies. -------------

i gave him a dummy on night 2 (actually drove to the supermarket to get one) because he was so unsettled but a few days later we found out he had lost heaps of weight cos i had no milk supply at all. once we had his feeding sorted he started spitting it out and wont take it. -------------

I introduced one at around 3wks.. she took it for one day and then spat it out. Over the last 3mths I proceeded to buy 4 more different types but nope, she wouldn't take them - until a week ago! Shes also learnt to suck her thumb, so we've done away with the dummy altogether - yipee!

Ouch, Poor thing, I have never heard of that, how hard for you guys until you figured that out! Anyway, I had one in my hospital bag and he took it sporadically (huge comfort sucker), but much preferred my finger to get to sleep, the NUK ones worked really well until about 5-6 months when he just wouldn't take it. We gave her one on about day 3. Yip bad parents lol. We don't use it instead of feeding or anything like that as if she's hungry she spits it out anyway. She sometimes doesn't even take it if she's upset so it only gets used when she wants it. Hoping she doesn't become reliant on it. | Dont feel bad, the hospital are now giving them to the little babies inSCBU. apparently it helps avoid cot death. I have only just started using one with my 4 week old cause i think he might have silent reflux. |

We started somewhere around the 1st to 2nd week? He still has it continually. Helps keep the spilling in when he sits up after a feed.
Now that he can sit by himself he's not using it as much but you can hear when he needs it, a high pitched whine or swallowing. I initially started using it cause he was comfort sucking as well. I gave jake his at 6 weeks, he is a comfort sucker and my boobs hurt like mad! Turns out he has reflux and the dummy actually helped that out heaps too.
He has when he goes to sleep and never brings it out of the cot. I dont want him walking around with it in his mouth when he is older. Thats just me though. -------------

The nurses in the NICU gave Callum a dummy on about day 1 or 2 I think (they asked permission). They wanted to encourage his sucking reflex eventhough he wasn't strong enough to try breastfeeding. Also apparently preemies tend to be "sucky" babies - definitely true for Callum.
We're still using one, don't often have to get up in the night to put it back in but he does go to sleep faster if he's sucking. ------------- SJ Callum - Dec 2008 Daniel - Oct 2010 |

I gave Tyler a dummy at 3 weeks old. Until then I had it in my head for some stupid reason that it was 'a bad thing to do & a last resort'. But it was one of the best things I ever did :-) Something that soothes a baby can't be bad for them!
Apparently it's best to wait until baby has learnt to breastfeed well as the dummy can in some cases interfere with babys latching on. |

I gave Angus one at 2 weeks old, he used it a bit for 3 weeks, then suddenly just started spitting it out... we now never use it at all. He has found his thumb and is a thumb sucker now though. -------------
