Things haven't been too good lately, have been really down and after speaking to a friend who had PND with #1 I made an appt with my GP to see if I could get a referall to a councillor or something. Anyway today Ben wasn't sleeping and Jack was whinging, grizzling, crying and wanting to be picked up all the time. Early this afternoon all I wanted to do was slap Jack to stop him crying, I didn't though! I called DH a couple times but couldn't get him so put both crying kids in the car and drove to Mum's work, the only place I could think of going. Jack fell asleep on the way so he was probably tired and that is why he was so horrid today.
Anyway this story is getting too long so to cut it short my Mum called the GP and moved my appt forward to this afternoon. She came with me and he did the Edinburgh PND test, I scored 17. I had previously scored 12 then 6 a week later when my mw tested me when Ben was 4wks. My GP is calling Nth Shore Hospital tomorrow as apparently they have a unit/dept that apparently deals with PND. So what can I expect to happen next? I am actually feeling so much betternow having seen the GP ------------- Lindsey

I dont know what to expect - but I remember feeling heaps better when I had seen my GP, I think it was a relief to be able to talk to the GP about how I felt.

It might be the Marinoto Unit but it might also just be the North Shore "branch" of Maternal Mental Health - you will probably get a phone call first, like a kind of pre-assessment, which is more of a relaxed chat to sort out which of their services you might benefit from the most and make a plan from there.
Do you have people around to lend some support so you can try and take some more time for yourself and focus on staying relaxed? I'd also highly recommend Rescue Remedy for you and your bigger boy - totally natural and safe for children, I have found it very helpful when I find myself losing focus during the day. ------------- Mama to two earth walkers & two angels. I have some great support. DH is great with helping with housework etc, often without being asked. I often ring Mum for a quick chat each day if the day looks like it is going downhill.
Unfortunately getting time to myself is not that easy. This year we have moved, had Ben and now extending our house  ! DH works Mon-Fri and then works on the house on the weekend. I am stuck between wanting him to take the boys (or just Jack) for a while on the weekend and wanting him to finish the house. I think one of the triggers is that the house is small and Jack and I are going stir-crazy so I need DH to at least enclose the extension so we can start using it.
DH is taking Jack to swimming on Saturday, we have a weekend coffee group in the afternoon and a family birthday lunch on Sunday so this weekend should be good and I will hopefully get a little respite. The other hard thing is that Jack is now suffering from separation anxiety and very clingy, I think as a result of having his leg in plaster a few months ago, so I have to be very careful leaving him with someone else. This is also what causes problems for me during the day, sometimes I can't even go to the toilet by myself! Well if I do get a phone call tomorrow it should be interesting, Jack always wants me or to talk on the phone when someone calls ------------- Lindsey

| Hi There, I have suffered terrible anxiety and depression since becoming pregnant with my first son, 3 years ago. I got referred to the maternity mental health team at my local hospital and came into contact with the most amazing lady from the team who has supported me for the past 3 years with my depression. I have attended group work shops and had one on one with the maternity team to help me battle my depression and it has been a real rollercoaster but I have finally got there. I reacted badly to the medication they put me on in the first 2 years but have finally found a medication which works for me which has been a godsend. I finally feel like I am getting myself back. I also have two very young children and it is very hard being stuck at home and dealing with the tantrums and hard times as they need your constant attention but I really think it helps getting out as much as possible . Even if it mean going for walks/park. It can be very isolating just being stuck inside all day with young children. If I can answer any questions just let me know. All the best :-) |

Hi Elise, thanks alot of what you have said sounds like me. I spoke with my doctor today and basically the only thing they can do for me is meds which I don't think I need at this stage. It's a bit disappointing as I what I really think I need is someone to talk to, maybe councilling but then that isn't provided and our insurance doesn't cover it. Really I think I ust need to speak with someone to get a few stratergies for coping. Have emailed my mw to see if she can advise me where to go ------------- Lindsey

Hey Linzy just wanted to send a I know living in a small house and doing building work can be very stressful. This year we've had our first baby, and built a new house (and all the construction racket was immediately behind our existing old house). I know how you feel about feeling so down, and then talking to a doctor or supportive person - then you feel better, then worse again a few days later. It's a yo-yo thing I wish I knew how to control. Aren't clingy children just wonderful! I can't offer much advice, except to empathsise and say that all the hard work you are putting in now will be of benefit in the future. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Have you guys looked up seretonin & how to naturally increase it?
MY DH had a bad accident & therefore became very depressed. He ended up with a script in his hand for drugs which he didn't want to do & asked me for help to find something natural. He had counciling which helped him as well. Exercise is a natural seretonin booster so those people saying you'll feel better after a walk are actually right. Yellow foods like pineapples & bananas are also seretonin boosters. Hi Kel (again LMAO!) - yes aware of a few of the feel good things. The main thing for me is to make sure I get enough sunshine. I noticed I always felt better after a sunbed session - found it was the Vit D producing rays. (I don't sunbed anymore). I've also heard potatoes are a feel good food. Haven't tried Nutricalm but swear by Rescue Remedy which I imagine is similar. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Just wanted to give you some advice on Jack being clingy after being in plaster. My Jack was super clingy after being in and out of hospital for a while and having lots of horrible procedures performed on him. The only way I could break the clingy phase (this was after a while, not straight away - I'm not that mean!) was basically just to leave him with people and basically throw him in the deep end and let him figure it out himself. I started with people he trusted well, his dad, my parents. Then moved on to my sister and BIL, my grandma, friends of ours. It has taken a while, but he's a lot better now and only gets clingy in unusual situations (which is completely normal). I also found telling him about how he can do things without mummy because he's a big boy really helpful. As for the toilet thing, sorry don't have a clue how to stop that, I just shut the door and listen to the crying 
Good luck with everything, its pretty hard. I had PND with #1 and severe anxiety during my 2nd pregnancy and have been monitored for PND since Ava was born (have to check in with my GP every fortnight). |

Thanks Emz. Jack has actually been really good lately, for a few reasons I have had to leave him with my Mum for an hour or so and he has only been upset for a few minutes and then not cared that I wasn't there!
Aliasmum, drat that my Mum is right when she tells me to go for a walk! Didn't know about bananas though, might try eating them. I always insist that chocolate helps! ------------- Lindsey
