Right so we're getting an elective for sure (although the backup MW thinks she'll let me try birthing naturally - har har lady!)

What I want to know is - I DO NOT want to go to an aftercare facility after I have to leave the hospital. I want to come home and recover in my own bed with my family etc. I wont be BF so I dont need to worry about getting the baby latched etc and my MW lives a few roads over from me. My question to you lovely gals is - has anyone done this? Have you hit any walls and been 'forced' to stay in hospital etc? I personally dont see why I shouldnt be allowed to come straight home (unless there were complications etc). Any advice is appreciated. I need to have this sorted out before my next MW appt as she needs to get it all sorted out.

My normal MW is fab and is going into bat for me if I dont get any luck with people listening to what I want.

Hiya, I had my baby on the friday round midday, had to stay overnight cause of all the drips and stuff they came out on the sat morning and I came home at midday. I had to sign a self release form though saying that they werent liable if anything went wrong. My mw was awesome to. I wanted to come home the afternoon i had him, but was still quite numb and couldnt really move at all.

I had James Tuesday morning and went home Friday morning...well no actually it was Friday lunchtime as we waited around to see the physio and thinking we needed to get signed off by paeds (not used to a healthy newborn). My OB would normally have had me stay till Sat but would have let me go on Thursday as she said "if you think you;ll be happier and more comfortable at home". DH couldnt come and get me on Thursday though (we live 3 hours from the hospital

Sounds awesome.. I wasnt happy with the level of care at the after-care hospital I was shipped off to, so I just really want to be at home. Its a shame we dont have facilities like they do in Auckland etc in chch.

Where did you go? I've been to burwood after a c/s and the care was excellent, and Rangiora after a vontouse delivery and again the care was awesome.

I found I liked the time in second time around, gave me time to bond with baby before going back home and having to juggle everything again. But if you want to go home i don't see any issues with it, would probably just mean your mw would have to come to your place to give you the anti clotting jab each day.

anti clotting jab???? I didnt get this (that I was aware of)

Posted By: Bizzy
Date Posted: 19 December 2009 at 11:13pm
ah the anti clot jab... i had forgot about that... that was the clexane wasnt it?

it is major abdominal surgery so i dont really think it would be feasible to go home straight away, not unless as someone said you signed a release. there is the pain relief meds that can only be given in hospital for a start. i dont think you could go home straight after any other abdominal surgery either.

Yeah the clexane, the lovely one they jab into your tummy each day for a few days that bruises and hurts!

Not sure about the pain relief Bizzy, I was only on panadol less than 24 hours after mine so I suppose it depends on each persons own recovery. However day 2 I felt gross cos the morphine made me vomit uncontrollably and they gave me something to stop it but I still felt vomitous and dizzy and a bit out of it all that next day.

If this is your second cs it is also much more envasive surgery as they have to go through all the scarring from the first, so unfortunately recovery can take longer and the pain can be greater (but obviously not in all cases).

I would think you could go home on day two after they remove the pain pump and catheter if you are insistent. However they wont give you any hard core drugs .. tramadol would probably be it and its not subsidised and at $1 a pill its quite expensive (but IMO worth it)

I however would rather stay in hospital than have to go home to a toddler, I was in for nearly a week and I still wasnt quite ready for the onslaught that was Miss Isabelle.

i had the pain pump taken away the evening after Thomas was born - didnt need it :) Same as cuppatea - I just had panadol! Oh and the catheter came out the following morning. i wasnt numb after that so I was able to have a shower and have it removed - thank god!

MW has already said that she'll come do the anti-clotting jab for me - she'd come visit every day regardless.
Also, I went to Rangiora for aftercare and was seriously unhappy. I think theres a post somewhere on here saying why!

I am pretty sure I never had even one of these jabs after my C section. I definitely would remember being injected in the tummy!

How strange...

I never had that injection either but then again I had very low platelet levels so they were more concerned that I wouldn't clot as opposed to the opposite..... maybe that is why some of us don't get that injection?

I opted to take no drugs after my c section, I didn't need them TBH, I have a pretty high pain tolerance level and I wasn't sore at all. I was just majorly uncomfy and had such restricted movement! That annoyed the crap out of me!!

Good luck with your c section!

quite the opposite with me peachy i had very low platelets too so much so thats why i got induced in the end and they were anal about making sure i got the jab...1 a day for 5 days.. it's really really slack if you didn;t:(

I had most of the drugs even though i hate taking them as even though i have a high pain threshold..omg it hurt so bad.. and makes me wonder about whether I'm wanting elective this time!!

re the coming home.. as all others said depends how you are..i initially wanted to come home asap too but realised i will need that time with Liam.. and also probably realistically will be a few days at least before I'm allowed home..I'm opted for CWH(no choice) then Burwood..

Thats interesting as I never even new about this "injection" until this thread and my m/w never mentioned a thing to me about it ...I am going to ask around my friends that have had c sections as not one of them has ever mentioned that they have had it either. How weird.

I didn't have any injections after my C/S either. I had no idea that you needed it, and no-one (MW, hospital staff etc) even mentioned it... Very weird!

I've never had any injections either that I was aware of?? Not with either of my two c-sections.... Maybe there is something they give after the op instead? Like a different option? Like how you can have staples or stitches.... Or you can have morphine in a pump after your operation or 1 dose of long acting/slow release morphine....

I had them....they were nasty, it was a tiny little needle that they slapped into my belly, in a different spot each time so was covered with little bruises! Some put it in slow and some fast but either way it stung.

I had the injections as well...

I personally could not have gone home after 2 days - I could walk, but very slowly, and hunched over. If I had a toddler I'm not sure I would have been able to deal with them!!

I never had those jabs..

I had isabella at 1.03pm on the Thursday and went home On the sunday at midday.
I got transferred from the main hospital to the small maternity hospital the next day though, I wanted to get breastfeeding sorted out before i went home, other wise I would have gone home on the saturday as i missed Caden terribly

It was very hard when i got home though, having caden running around and not being able to work very well etc, but I recovered really well with my second c section.

I had those injections, but I'm pretty sure I only had two of them.   From all the other pains I had, those were pretty easy by comparison!

First time around I had Sam on the tuesday about midday and went home on Sunday, and this time I had Jamie on Wednesday night, went to River Ridge on the Saturday and came home on the Monday.    For me personally, as much as I missed Sam I knew that once I was home that was it, there was no going back!   Having a newborn baby is much easier than having a newborn baby AND a two year old all at once because I have found that once one goes to sleep, the other will wake up!

My midwife gave me a piece of great advice - 'Don't try to be a hero' and she was right. Take all the time you need, take all the painkillers that are offered to you, because even if you start to feel like the pain from your wound is going away, it comes back!   And never be afraid to ask for help.

I think that is what helped me most Renee - taking the pain relief when it was offered. My MW told me it's far easier to stay on top of the pain (small doses more often) than to let the pain relief wear off and start from the beginning again (bigger doses less often). So so true!!

yeah me too re the pain relief ..i dont get people thinking how great it is to not take the pain relief.. ! I am all for feeling better!:)

so weird about the injections they went on and on and on about how important they were to me..I'm like whatever just do it..!

If one of you currently pregnant ladies could ask their mw what the deal is with why some dont get them that would be super... I am all curious now!

DH reckons I probably got them but dont remember!

I had the stupid jabs also. First 3 days were fine it didnt bother me but the last 2 were sooo painfull! I begged not to have the last one... but she bribed me with going home or not! haha. I didnt get bruises though.

I lost alot of blood during my c/s though and got told it had something to do with that... maybe not...

I was sooo ready to go home after day 2, but i stayed until day 5 for my own health and knowing if something went wrong i was in the right place. I guess once you have had the c/s you will know if you are feeling up to it or not. Will you have a good amount of support at home? With not bf you should be able to rest a bit more and others could do the feeding if you need to rest i guess.

I wonder if thats what it is, i had a PPH(800mls) that they were all anal about. how many jabbers were also bleeders? lol

Posted By: ElfsMum
Date Posted: 30 December 2009 at 12:46pm
lol sounds great huntd:) i must ask cause if my platelets drop this time like last time.. they worried about bleeding as i am already a bleeder..apparently red heads bleed more lol.. lost 1000ml in my c section so yeah maybe that is why! i just assumed that every person had to as mw's both mine and hospital ones kept telling me i needed 5 to make blood not clot or something?

Maybe it is, i lost 2 litres and had a transfusion of 2 bags... They were also worried i had a blood clot straight after and were going to put me under and open me up again to clean me out again but then they said they would do other things which included the jabs...

Sorry to thread jack....

Another who didn't have the jabs here, and I'm very curious about them now!

Like Melnel, my husband would probably tell me I had them and don't remember. I did feel like baby and I were poked and proded for the 48 hours after he was born.

you have them every day for 5 days (mostly) at the same time.. i dont remember everything but i remember that:) it was before DH was allowed to visit:( damn i should have asked her on tue..will have to wait till 12th to ask now!

Mine were all given in the evening at the same time (maybe it varies depending on when baby was born). Mine was a straight forward elective so i don't think I lost a lot of blood, but I dunno, maybe I did.

I had them too (North Shore hospital) - was really annoying as they gave me the first one at midnight so for the next 3 days I was there I had to stay up until midnight for them as they are given 24 hours apart. I'm not sure how much blood I lost but it was quite a rough delivery.
