Jake will be 3 in june, and I can't see him dropping his nap by then. The reason I ask is public kindy is in the afternoons for 3 year olds ... well Jake sleeps about 3 hours in the arvo so would miss the whole thing! I have enrolled him in a private kindy that had the little kids in the morning, but chances are he will be at daycare instead so will be able to still sleep (although at 3.5 they go to the next rm with no beds but I think he could still sleep if he needed it).

So anyway - he sleeps for about 2-3.5 hrs, 4 hours if really tired (but may go to bed 30mins later if he sleeps that long). So normally he goes to his room for books at 7.30, so I guess asleep about 7.45pm, and up anywhere between 6-7am. He is very active, and a big eater.

Is he suddenly going to need a couple of hours less sleep in the next few months?    Otherwise why would kindy be in the arvo for 3 year olds if they normally do still nap? Gosh, he'd be a major grump in the arvo with no sleep I'm sure!!

i have always wondered about this too Nikki, as Ella sounds the same as Jake (still sleeps 2-3 hrs in the afternoon). I am looking at kindergartens for Ella at the moment, and have found a private kindy/preschool that does morning sessions for 3 years so am thinking we will probably have to go for that option (otherwise I can imagine a VERY tired and grumpy Ella at the end of the day too).

Isla is 3 yrs 3 months and sleeps 10 1/2 hrs at night and 1 1/2- 2 hrs at lunchtime everyday. She goes to daycare 3 days a week from 9-3pm and sleeps the same there too.

Amy was still having a nap about 5 days out of 7 when she stated kindy at 3y3m. We just decided to suck it up and have her not nap on those days and start bed time earlier.

She adjusted very well and yes she was grumpy but the earlier bed time on kindy days and the nap on the other 4 days was OK. Now at 3y8m she has dropped the sleep but has quiet time in her room on non-kindy days (so I can have a rest )

My friends 3.5 yo just dropped his day nap. She held off putting him in Kindy until now for that reason.
Plus she has younger twins too to add to the mix and their nap time is the same time as kindy time so wasn't in any rush to disrupt all naps!

My four year old still naps, he has a bigger nap than Caprece some days. I'm not really sure how to get around the afternoon kindy thing apart from moving his sleep forward.

I'm so jealous of the afternoon nappers!    (For myself too, I'd love a nap)   Sam gave up sleeping in the afternoon before he was two! Occasionally he is so tired that he just has to have one, but then we have yelling and mucking around until 11PM, so it's much better for us to ride out the afternoon with him a bit over tired.

Sorry, not much to add, Sam will be starting kindy at the end of May.   I hope they're ready for him! I dare say they will never forget him when he leaves.

OK, so at least hes not a freak ... hes been in bed for over 3 hours right now ....

So I wonder why the public kindys would do it that way around?!

If I get Elle into bed for a nap she will sleep 3 hours. However, in order for her to go to Kindy (it runs from 12.15 to 2.45) we had to cut the sleep out. She ends up in bed early and has naps on the weekend. It is a bit rough at times but I figure Kindy is good for her so I choose to send her there instead of giving her a nap.

If I kept Jake up til 2.45 he would fall asleep the second the car started moving!

To me, it makes far more sense what the private kindy does, 3 yr olds in the morning.

alot of the kindys are changing their hours these days to be more like daycare so this may happen at your kindy

The private one has a few spaces for 4 year olds that are "all day" (6 hours) but not for 3 year olds, and definitely no napping. Not sure about the public ones though.

wow three hour naps! OMG!!! I think we only get 3 hour ones once a month or so on a sunday maybe.....if that.....

we had ONE - yes ONE nap all summer!!! loads of reasons and she couldnt switch off to nap even in car!

she is dropping her naps at Dc at moment - most weeks she will nap 1-3 times a week for 45 mins to 1.5 hours - when she goes into next room at 3 (1 month from now!!!) she will only get a nap if she asks to as there are no beds - so will go back to old room to nap - I cant see THAT happening with her! i think only 2 -3 kids in her room sleep more than 2 hours at DC at moment....most are starting to drop them or do 1- 1.5 hours.

have this as well DS1 sleeps 2-3 hours every afternoon, so can't enroll him in kindy.
But may try as someone else suggested moving nap time forward to say 11am and wake at 12.30 only 1.5hr as kindy is only 3 afternoons a week.
or maybe private kindy in the morning which makes better sense.
Want to use my 20 ECE hours!

Charlotte dropped her sleep at around 2 years 9 months when we were on holiday.
Since then she hasn't had a sleep at home ever but will sometimes have a sleep at daycare. If she doesn't sleep at daycare she will always have a rest at least.

We found that when she d was having long sleeps it effected her going to bed at night so were also happy to ride out the cranky afternoons.

She will sometimes bring her pillow and duvet into the lounge and lie down to watch tv but that doesn't usually last long.

I think it just shows that each child is so different, which is no help to you at all
