My ds was born 34+6 days on the 10th of April. He is in wellington Neonates and doing really well I was just wondering if anyone else has been through a similiar time and how long their little one was in hospital, how long it took to establish breast feeding etc. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Hi Shelly.
Firstly, congrats on the arrival of your DS  Pleased to hear he is doing really well.
I can't really help with your questions, but just wanted to let you know I'm here if you want someone to talk to. My DS was born at 26+1 weeks and we spent about 3 months in NICU Wgtn. I found the staff to be fantastic, hope you do too. It can be extremely hard to have your baby in NICU and away from you. My son was born at 26+5weeks and we were in nicu 5 days short of 4 months. Unfortunately we didnt get the breastfeeding established as everytime we tried he got too tired and had a Brady and also I ended up with sever mastitis (sp) got stopped the trying to feed and the pumping I wish you all the best and hope you get the feeding sorted soon so he can be at home with you Also Juzzo - justine has just had her son come home this past week from wellington nicu after almost 4 months, maybe you could pm her and have a chat about it as I know the nicu's are all different. she maybe she could have some advice about the staff etc up there (sorry justine! I hope you don't mind) |

My wee girl was born at 34+1 in December 08. Was a huge shock so I can imagine what you are going through. My girl had breathing difficulties and was on CPAP for 2 days and then oxygen via nasal prongs for a few days after that. She also had jaundice and was on a bili bed. We were told at the begining that she would be in hospital till her due date but we were out of there in 10 days. Gabrielle started breastfeeding two feeds a day on day 5 and was fully BF by the time we went home. However, she was a crappy feeder and got really really tired and often fell asleep before the feed was over, took well over an hour to feed and then at 3 weeks old started screaming with reflux (which took me a while to work out that was what the screaming was).
I was lucky in that my midwife knew I wanted to BF and so tracked down the hospital lactation consultant for me and we worked with the nurses to get Gabrielle going on the breast. It was hard at first because she had trouble latching and a very weak suck but with the help of nipple sheilds we got there and I breastfed till 6.5months (could have gone longer but she was really sick and in hospital and ....long story). Anyway, good luck and I hope everything goes well for you and your bubs. PM me if you want to chat or anything. Our boys were born at 28w 5 days, and they stayed in the NICU till they were 32 weeks then they moved them to the SCBU where they stayed till they were about 36 weeks. Basically they had to grow well, and come off caffeine, cpap, be able to self regulate their body temps, also the monitoring slowly came off and feed before they came home. It was hard but we got there. I guess everyone will find it different, as each baby is special. Hugs. I hope the time goes fast for you and your baby thrives.  -------------

One of my old workmates son was born at 34weeks. He was in SCBU for 2weeks if not less and she bfed until 4.5months. I know she pumped to feed him while in SCBU. She was back at work by the time he was 4mths ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

my eldest was born 34 +5 but that was nearly 15 years ago.
She was only in scbu for 3 days then in the ward with me until 10 days old when they let us go home. she was in an incubater for 2 days. She was fully BF when we left the hospital but took to it really well. I guess each baby is different and really the only advice I can give is take each day as it comes and try not to stress (easier said than done I know)... it will all come together ------------- http://lilypie.com">

The nurses in wellington NICU are great they are really kind and know their stuff. We knew he was coming early as we had major placenta problems and had been in hospital for a couple of weeks before hand. They weren't expectiong him to have any problems and that he would be sent home with me when I was discharged but his lungs had other ideas. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Hi Shelly! Firstly congrats on the arrival of wee Toby!
My 2 were born at 35+4 weeks as Aoife was 'small for dates' and had reduced fluid. She was 3lbs10oz and Eimear was 5lbs. Ironically Aoife had no problem breathing. Eimear was on CPAP for 3 days and both were out of their incubators by day 4. I managed to get BF established by day 8 (tubes came out) and we were home by day 10. I used nipple shields to BF, as both girls were too small to latch on efficiently without them. The staff in NICU are lovely. You're in good hands! :) |

My DD was born at 28+1in August last year. She was in level 3 NICU at Auckland hospital for 4.5 weeks until we were transferred back to SCBU in Whg for another 4 and a half weeks. She was on CPAP for the first 3 weeks, which seems like a heck of a long stretch now!
She didn't start exclusively breastfeeding (no NG feeds) until the week before we went home, at 36 weeks. The lactation consultants were great, they spent alot of time with us and were very helpful - I've even been back to see them once since we've been home. My girls were born at 33w4d and were in our local NNU for 4 1/2 weeks. They didn't need CPAP or breathing assistance at all though, just the bili lights for 24 hours because of jaundice. We never mananged to get bfing established at all, Amber was better than Jade, Jade never latched at all, even with the help of nipple shields. They were exclusively bottle fed for the week before we came home (a mix of EBM and formula) when they would have been 38w gestation.

My DD was born at 35 weeks plus 4 days. Stayed out of NN ward, as she is a determind little thing. She struggled to latch on at first and was feed via a tube for a few days. After 4 days was chopping on the boob and I think we were established by the day 5.
It was a big shock having her come early, I was expecting a big, late baby not a small early one. |

Kiara was 33+6. She spent about 2 1/2 weeks in nicu. After the first few days of apnoeas (scary) it was just about learning to feed, because apparently they don't have the suckling response until around 36 weeks. She's absolutely fine now. Callum was born at 32wks exactly, we had a little bit of warning too as my waters broke a week earlier, but not much! It's still a shock dealing with NICU and not having your baby come home with you I think
Callum did really well considering his gestation. He was 1.92kg born and came home after 10 days when his weight got back up to 2ish kgs. We started BF on day 3 and C took to it pretty well although I did need to use nipple shields. I BFd him till he was just over 5mo. Feeding does take forever in the early days! At about 8m Callum was pretty much caught up to his wee friends born at the same time in terms of weight and development. Now he is 15m and thriving. He's awesome

My first son was born at 35+2. He was a good weight and luckily didn't need NICU.I can't be much help there sorry but it seems others have offered their experience on that note anyway.
My boy took 3-4 weeks to get his sucking reflux before breast feeding was established and I could give up the expressing and bottle feeding. He was on the 15th percentile for a long while but around 5mths was getting closer to the 50th percentile. He is now 17mths and is on the 80th for height and 60th weight. I was just wanting to let you know that it gets easier and they catch up quickly to their peers. |

Hi Shelly, glad to hear everything went well and you have your wee boy home. As per Tastic's message earlier, I had Harlow at 24wks + 6days on November 19, he was due 5th March. We've only recently come home and have had to make 3 trips back to NICU. Did you manage to get the feeding sorted? We've found it incredibly difficult and I gave up attempting to breastfeed but he's still on EBM until it runs out of the freezer! Even bottlefeeding is a mission.

Hey, just saw your message ... my dd was born at 35 wks ... and she was in Wgtn NICU for 10 days ... they are amazing in their! It took all of those 10 days to establish bf, and I used a nipple shield - which she eventually decided she didn't need anymore. Still bf'ing and while she is little (10th percentile for weight) - she is doing really well! Hope you are enjoying it and are managing to get some sleep?!

Wow Juzzo Harlow makes Toby look full term. I hope he is doing well now for you. are you close to wellington - it must of been hard having to go forwards and back all the time for that long. We are only in Jville and that was enough. toby is ok with his feeding although he needs the odd top up. His main problem was his little lungs went pop!!
leeG thanks for the reply, yes it was placenta previa with a suspected accreta which is when the placenta starts knitting into the wall of the uturus. Good to hear how well you guys are doing. Yeap thats how the nurse described it. He had a hematoma on both lungs and went from Agar 9 at birth to a breathing tube for 5 days with chest drains on both sides.
I know Aotea well, we have friends who live out there. Its hard going when you have other kids, I know I felt very torn between them. ------------- http://lilypie.com">
