Hi folks

Ok so NO, we don't know what sex sibling JJ is getting, but I'm only asking about boy names cos I'm pretty sure we've got girl names sorted (NO, I'm not telling ).

A slightly strange request: I'm after uncommon but not unusual boy names. JJ is Jeremy John, which is a perfect example because Jeremy is not an unusual name at all but it wasn't even in the top 100 names in 2008.

(NB for anyone interested, the link to the Excel file giving the top 100 baby names in NZ for both sexes since 2004 is http://www.dia.govt.nz/pubforms.nsf/URL/Top100BabyNamesNewZealand.xls/$file/Top100BabyNamesNewZealand.xls - here .)

Ideally names won't be in that list at all, but at the moment I'd settle for not in the top 30

Some constraints for you, just to make life more difficult. Our last name is Dutch, starts with an O and ends with an -an sound. That means several points:

- Nothing too obviously ethnic, of any description. Some of the Gaelic names just seem like a mishmash of cultures when mixed with a Dutch surname, and a Dutch name just seems too, well, Dutch!

- Initials have to be classroom taunt proof. So no names starting with B, F, H, or P.

- Final sounds of the names are important as well. With a surname that starts with a vowel sound, there are several names that just don't roll off the tongue (eg Louis, Theo). Ditto - but I feel less strongly about this - first names that end in an '-an' type sound and kinda rhyme may well be out (eg Colin, Lachlan).

- We'd also prefer to avoid names starting with the same initials as ones we already have in the house, which means ideally no D, J or R names either. I know that doesn't leave many letters!

Anybody got any bright ideas?

Oliver is what we would have called Milla and Porscha had they been boys - it dosent seem to break any of your rules but if you dont want 'OO' then what about Nathan(iel), or Adam , Luke, or Noah

I like Oliver but it's too popular - number 2 last year Noah's too popular as well. Adam is a definite possibility but we have quite close friends named Nathaniel and Luke so they're off the list

If we had boys, we were going to have Max and Harry (well, I liked Harry, I was convincing DH it was a cool name too - his grandfather's). My sis has just had a little boy, Oliver Joe, and all it reminds me of is my cat that Mum and Dad had until it died a year or so ago - his name was Oliver Murphy.

Otherwise there's Mark (goes with Jeremy too!!), Shaun/Sean, Chris, Shane, Andrew, David, Matthew...I like Camero too.

Posted By: Raspberryjam
Date Posted: 04 April 2010 at 9:18pm
haha ok JJ and Bob then - Milla loves that name - thats what she calls our lawn mower man

Before we found out that Porscha was a girl we thought twice about Oli too, since it is so common, but even though it was number 2 it still is only a small number is comparison to how many boys babies were born that year so we would have just gone with it

I loove Adam though, but my cousin has a boy called adam
I really would love to have my first choice be Jasper, which I know you dont want to use but its soo cute Weegee!!

Cameron does go well with Jeremy - 'JJ and Cam' has a cool ring for brothers

Kate, thanks for the great list - DH is a David

I quite like Cameron but I'm a bit iffy about the rhyming thing...

I can't be much help as the name I would want to call a boy my sister is using! (I swear I didn't talk her in to it - much) She is calling him Keet, which is my Grandma's maiden name. Although I think I prefer the spelling Keate, like the poet.

Just as side note, my Mother was going to call my sister had she been a boy 'Jeremy John Caleb' Caleb is another name I just love but it's in the top 100 so off your list.

Hmmm ok heres some ideas?

Sean
Elias
Gorge (I know this one seems old fashioned but I think little boys named Gorge are always so cute)
Jensen (A friend of mine just named their little boy Jensen, I didn't like it at first but its grown on me)
I like Felix too but it's an F lol
Tobias??
Malcolm
(Not sure I like that name either but thought I'd throw them in there for good measure!)

LOL Em I love your blinkie

I loved Caleb too, but it's off our list not because it's in the top 100 but for much sadder reasons. Firstly one of the teachers at JJ's daycare had a stillborn little boy named Caleb a year or two back That would have been bad enough but then the next Caleb to come along at the same daycare died (very recently) of a brain tumour at about 10 months old So really Caleb isn't an option for us

My favourite dutch boys name is Keyes, realise that doesn't fit in with the rules.

The option is to consider last names as first names. - Fletcher, Fraser, Campbell, Mitchell

How about Mark/Marcus/Marco

That list is frustrating the two boys names we like have been in the top 10 for over 100 years.

Robert, Simon, Paul or Peter

Hmmmm I can see your 'problem' (not that it is but YKWIM) a lot of names dont sound quite right with your surname.. Toby, Campbell, Dominic, Fletcher, Mark - all have the 'right' sound but most of them break your 'rules'!!!

Bryce, Lance, Simon, Taylor, Harrison, Lucas, Fergus, Glen, Blake, Issac, Michael - few recent friend / family additions!

Oooh I like Timothy but perhaps a bit sing-songy with Jeremy

Fletcher is my pick

I think Mark sounds great with your sirname!! Have you chosen a middle name?

Good point about the initials too - the boys name I like starts with B so his initials would be BS... Hmm will have to rethink that lol. (And his middle name would be Joseph - BJ doesn't look very good either does it?

What about Thomas? Can't remember if I read that on the top 100 list on the previous page, if so then ignore that

Probably not very helpful but there you go!

We had a friend whose son was Elijah. Thought that had a nice ring to it.

My son is Anthony so of course I like that name but everyone forgets the th part and it becomes antony. Or Anton.

Christian, Christopher, Gregory, Trey, Timothy, Tony, Preston, Taylor (however people will invision a six pack of abs before becoming a werewolf) Or Edward (Nice name just not sure about that alabaster skin tone and freaky eyes in the movie - not very cutesy babyish) Samuel (sam for short - do you think I am a twilight fan lol) Kipling, Kyle, Carter,

Not sure how many are on the top 100 but thought I would just do a bit of brainstorming for you.

Ooooh I wanna know what your last name is now!! We are battling with the Dutch last name problem aswell...

Although, we are also struggling, as we will NOT have any names with the "y" in it (cos theres no y in the alphabet..)

And DH doesn't want a name that sounds like a word that translates into something different (eg saying the name and them hearing the word "bread" or something silly!)

Dutch names are difficult to work with Glad we aren't the only ones struggling (oh, we have to do boy AND girl still!)

It was:

Caleb
Calum
Dominic
Elliot
Ewan
Ethan
Isaac
Kieran
Leon
Liam
Oscar
Otis
Samson
Sebastian
Tobais
Vaughn

Some I like, others just remind me of childhood movies (Neverending Story for one). Along those lines... Westley
Also some don't work so well with your surname.

And can I please put in an anti-vote for Sean. Don't get me wrong, I love the name, I'd just prefer to only have one nephew called Sean!

edited to add:

Although I've mentioned names to you in the past that we like you're welcome to any of them... lets be honest, we're unlikely to reproduce any time soon and even if we do we will more than likely change our minds about names. Plus we have an easier surname to match!

I wouldn't worry too much about names that come from movies, my name comes from a movie that came out in 1972, I've never seen it and its only older people that remember, no one of my generation or younger has any idea.

Hansel and Gretel - great dutch names!

On purpose Em!

Thanks so much for all your help everyone - keep them coming! Unfortunately Alexander is off the menu, we have a nephew called Alex.

To help with the other names, I don't really like surnames as first names, just to be a pain. And when a name is shortened I have to have the long version as the actual name, and have to like the long version as well - for example, I like Charlie, but don't like Charles, and Charlton doesn't go with our surname.

(HB - you were curious about our surname - go look me up in our Due July Facebook group )

I LOVE Archie (would have Archer as the 'long' version, not that it's any longer but ygwim) but it's a bit 'out there' for my conservative DH (he vetoed Jasper when we were shortlisting names for JJ). I'm working on him He doesn't like Seb/Sebastian either. Or Edward! (I quite liked Teddy.)

Deb - even if he doesn't get made fun of, if we called a boy BO I would see 'Body Odour' when I looked at my son's initials

Oh, something else I thought of - a name we tossed around when looking for JJ's name was Gareth, which I still like, but I don't think it 'goes' with Jeremy. How important do you think it is for sibling's names to 'go together'?
Middle name - undecided but probably Francis or William (both family names).

I dont know that its so important that they match Weegee, as long as they dont clash - like we couldnt have Molly or Bella, I cant actually think of much that sounds wrong with Jeremy - but I wouldnt think youd want a CJ or AJ now you have a JJ - wouldnt really go with something like Benji either - although its a good name

I like Archer - JJ and Archie - cool

Archie is short for Archibald and it seems to be one of those grandpa names that has become popular again.

Christopher is a popular dutch name - I know a few dutch guys called Chris.

Personally I think sibling names shouldn't be similar - My brother is Blair and I'm Fleur and both ending in that R sound made it problematic for my mother when she was calling us and we thought she wanted the other one - or we deliberatly ignored her.

Couple of others to throw in to the selection - Martin, Stewart or Stephen - kinda like Jeremy fairly traditional but not overly common these days.

I refloated Archer with DH last night, pretending I couldn't remember what he'd said about it and he didn't totally veto it this time so maybe it's back on the list (I know Archie is usually short for Archibald but I don't like the 'bald' part

LOL at you and your brother's selective hearing Fleur

KK, you've been watching too much Home and Away again

RJ, instead of Porsha you should name #2 Molly, then you have to have a third girl and name her Amanda (Milla, Molly and Mandy )

My brother is Stephen and yeah, pretty much anything that ends with an -on, -an or -en (including Evan) rhymes with our last name - it doesn't totally rule it out but makes me go a bit

I've relayed this joke on here before but when we were naming JJ we told our families a boy was going to be "Edward Ian Ewan Ivan" (EIEIO)

Me too! Im voting Archie !

Haha, I had thought that too - DH really liked Molly and I did try Holly but wouldnt have it - so It was Milla which we love and it so suits her

How about Kyler? Its dutch for Archer.  Realise you didn't want anything particularly dutch, thought that was quite cute. I can see the problem with most dutch names would be the spelling.

Much as I hate to admit it came from TV, it was Addison's brother that gave me the idea in the first place I figure everybody will have forgotten him by July anyway...

I like Archer (and Archie) too ... and Asher, I know an Asher and he's the sweetest little boy!

And I think Jeremy and Gareth go together, but then I would because DH has a brother called Jeremy ... not sure if I like the actual name though, but I never do when they're associated with someone else (which makes picking a boy's name hard!)

I don't like the name Gareth, but I think it's one of those names that would grow on you. I know a boy called Asher, he was a little demon lol.

I thought of another name this evening but it went out of my head. What about Elliot?

Miles = guilty on the Home and Away front Patrick was Greys LOL

I keep coming back to Michael I must admit, I think it sounds nice with your surname. Archer is very cool, dunno about Archie though personally, a bit too close to the 'chav' (a bit like the UK version of bogan maybe??) obsession with Archie / Alfie etc But then most names take on the little persons personality quite quickly, I thought Lance was a little unusal at first when our good friends named their first baby but its a lovely name for a lovely little boy.

Henry was the other one I thought of last night, I think its very sweet. Is two Y ending names a bit sing-songy thou??

LOL I thought Patrick might have been a Home & Away/McLeod's Daughters crossover thing Funny how I went straight to H&A when there's a Miles on Lost too (but I remember Hayden dancing to H&A credits).

See the fact that I'm now teaching is another complicating factor, someone suggests a name and I go hrmm, no, I teach a *insert names that Em and KK may or may not have just suggested* and he's a lazy little so and so! Plus we have reasonably close friends who have a Henry (they call him Harry though) so it kinda takes it off the list. (Max is off for a similar reason, plus are there any 12th man fans out there? His father would be forever saying "ohhh Max!" in an annoying pseudo-Australian accent.)

Sorry, I don't mean to be so negative all the time! I truly appreciate everyone's suggestions!

Anna do you mean your DH has a brother called Gareth?

Asher is a good suggestion I know somebody through another forum who has two little boys called Aiden and Asher, both names I like, I should ask her what other names were on her list!

I read a chicklit book and it had a little boy in it called 'Grayer'

We were at a complete loss when we were trying to name the girls. I really wanted Violet as a name for one of the girls as it's my grans name but DP didn't like it as he said whenever he saw it written down he saw 'Violent' which is why we changed the spelling to the French way. Erynn was finally named after DP listed the same of every girl he had EVER met! We changed the spelling from Erin to Erynn because I was once married to an Eric and when written down they look very similar (Eric/Erin)

My sister is a teacher so any other names that were suggested were quickly shot down by her if she had had a horrible kid by that name!

I like Garth better than Gareth because it reminds me of Garth Brooks!! :)

What about Jacob/ Jakeb? Jake for short.. oh wait just realised then you would have too starting with J that was a rule my bad!!

Ive always liked Matthew, with Matty for short.

just let JJ name him/her! Then you'll set something real cool like Blue or Iggle Piggle haha maybe even Nemo?

Posted By: weegee
Date Posted: 08 April 2010 at 1:32pm
LOL yep Nemo would definitely be on JJ's list at the moment, that or Turtle (or his favourite words which are Bubble! and Noodle!)   When we've been throwing names around the only name JJ parroted was Dominic (well, "Dom" anyway) so maybe we could take that into account.

People I knew once let their little boy, who was called Thomas and was a Thomas the Tank Engine nut, name his little sister, and he came up with Annabelle (cos it was a mix of Annie and Clarabelle, Thomas' carriages) - they got lucky on that front I guess, could have been a lot worse.

I instantly thought "Wayne's World" with Garth too, and Kurt makes me think of Glee

ETA: or is the Glee kid Kirk? Kurt reminds me of Sound of Music too.

haha ! my friend has a Thomas and said if she had a girl she would call her Annabelle for the same reason (tho there are actually a few girl names, eg Emily ) and when I said "what if you have another boy " she said "ah, I'll call him the fat controller "

Kurt just reminds me of Kurt Cobain
