Hi, I will be having my 5th caesar in November and have been considering for awhile whether or not to ask for a hysterectomy to be done. This will definitely be our last baby, & I've always had irregular & painful periods. Any experiences/ideas/tips?

Also, I'm only 28 so I'm not even sure if they'll let me have one?

i dont think they do them as a form of birth control...there has to be something really wrong to have that done - i think! they will definitley be able to tie your tubes while in there though. i think they go by how many kids you have not your age.

Thanks for your reply, I'd considered tubes tie til mum had hers done & it went badly. I guess i'll just discuss it with my OB but was hoping for a bit more info first to build up my courage! He's fantastic but a little scary sometimes, lol!

My cousin had her tubes tied during her last c-sect with her last baby. She is in her mid 30s though. It was baby #5 for her and 3rd section so I think they just decided that she wanted to do it and they might as well do it at the same time.
So far so good for her Chat to your OB. You can do it

Lol, thanks, =). With mum's tubes tie scar tissue built up around the clips and flipped her ovary, she ended up having the tube removed, but it took ages ( & a lot of pain) for anyone to listen to her, =(. I see ob on fri, see what he says.

Ok, so I chickened out on asking OB, but in other news, my DH has decided that he'll have the snip, so I don't have to worry about having my tubes tied anymore. I will certainly still be seeking out a hysterectomy, but not just yet.

I really dont believe they perform hysterectomys unless medically needed. Apart from being major surgery it is essentially causing menopause which increases the risk of other health issues for women.
While I can appreciate you dont want any more children I would be do a lot of research into what will happen to your body afterwards (ie, increasing levels of testosterone causing unwanted facial hair, increase in weight that is harder to loose, needing lubricants when having sex as your body wont produce its natural lubricants, increased risk of depression... those are just off the top of my head. Breast cancer is higher in post menopausal women also).
But yeah for your man agreeing to get the snip! Far less invasive than having your tubes tied let alone a hysterectomy.
A quick google gave me this

Though it does depend on whether they leave your ovaries or not, doesn't it? I think the preference in premenopausal women is to leave the ovaries in so they go through the hormonal changes at the normal time?

Yep i'd be looking at the "total" hysterectomy, they remove the uterus and cervix but leave behind the ovaries. My main reason is that i've always had really heavy, irregular and painful periods, and with my kids (and work when I go back) being up to my eyeballs on painkillers for a week or two at a time is less than ideal. I also end up really anemic all the time. But I don't normally start cycling til at least a year after having baby so I should probably relax for at least the next year, =)

You sound a lot like my MIL before she had her hysterectomy, she said it was the best thing she ever did and wished she had done it sooner, she had it done in her 40's. She still has her ovaries. She had bad heavy periods and lots of pain and when they actually went in and did it they found she had a mass in her womb.

At my last c-sect the registrar was fascinated with the inside of my womb, ob was pointing out scar tissue from previous pregnancies, from what "could have been fibroids at one stage". They said they could do an "abrasion" (?) if it prevented me from getting pregnant but it hasn't. Awful not being able to be active while I have my period too, cos too much activity or getting hot makes me bleed really heavy. I'm glad to hear your mil found it a positive experience!
