Aiden is exclusively bf, and seems to be intollerent to soy in my diet.
Isla had dairy allergy/reflux/eczema and multiple other food intollerences which she fully outgrew by age 2 yrs, but had no problem with soy and still has soy milk rather than cows, but can have small ammount of dairy products with no problem.
Aiden was getting reflux and was very unsettled until
I stopped having soy milk. I have since tried to have it again on 4 different occasions weeks apart, 2 diff brands, and each time he has had 24 hrs of screaming in between sleeps, farting lots, very unsettled.
So I havent been having soy for about 2 months now and hes been good. I dont drink cows milk, but do have other dairy products, I dont have choc or caffine/ no spicy food/onions etc.
This week Mum made soup, I had a bowl and he was very unsettled- there was only 1/2 an onion in the whole pot plus meat/veges that I usually eat and one of those dried soup mix packets with the dried peas/barley and stock powders in it.
So I ate it again the next day, and he contined to be even more unsettles, farting almost constantly day and night and obviously uncomfortable with it too. I got Mum to check te soup mix packet and it contained soy. Would have been such a small ammount in that whole pot of soup, and I only had one bowl each day for 2 days. Would it be likely that it was the soy, or could it have been the barley or other dired grain in it?
Should I avoid all things with soy like soy sauce and soy&linseed crackers and bread or do they contain diff types of soy?
Any help greatly appreciated! Im clued up on dairy allergy, but no idea about soy!
TIA!

Both my kids have positive RAST tests to soy. According to our allergy specialist soy does not go through BM, however lots of mum's (myself included) disagree!
Officially also, soy lecithin is tolerated by most people with soy allergies - so you could probably assume that it is fine to eat yourself.
Personally I would probably be looking at something else rather than soy in this instance- I wouldn't have thought that small amount filtered through your milk would have had a big effect. Probably the best way to test it though is go a few weeks soy free and then try it again (maybe with a glass of soy milk).

Sorry, I probably wasn't too clear with my earlier post.
Which was that soy is very rarely a problem food while BFding. But still very possible and you as a BFding mum know best about what is upsetting your bub.
If you find soy milk a problem then yes, you should probably also avoid other sources of soy - soy cheese, soy sauce, soy in products etc.
You probably can make an exception for soy lecithin as it doesn't contain any soy protein (allergies are almost always to proteins). Soy lecithin is an emulsifier which is added to many processed foods. It is very common, and probably the hardest soy to avoid.

We are almost soy free here as well. Definitely should be for myself alone.
Soy flour is also in bread as well
I believe soy goes through my bm. My boy didn't skin prick to anything but he has reactions when I have soy, although they are more slow to build up & slow to get rid of.

hi there, my son jack has many food intolerences, including soy protein. it is very hard to avoid it as it is in a lot of processed food and yes boohoo is in bread. and yes soy lecithin is different to the protein. as jack can have this. i feel for you as i have check all of his foods and it is a long trip to the supermarket checking labels as u go. though we have to look for dairy, egg, rice, chicken and barley too. Also jack did not react to a RAS test as he has an intolerance and he can not process these foods. he has been diagniosed with FPIES, food entocolitis syndrome, cant break down the proteins in the above foods and strips the lining of mucus from his bowel. This sees him crying and in pain and is takes about 9 weeks to repair itself good on you for looking further and trying to take things out of your diet. not all food reactions can be seen and it is hard to find the culprit. good luck and if i can help with anything let me know, we have been at this for the past year and still going strong
