So we are looking at wedding rings but we are having a bit of trouble. my problems-

white gold or yellow gold? i wear white gold now but im still young so it may change and i have always thought i would have a gold wedding ring

the design, as i like simple classic styles but DP wants something a bit different

how much to spend? we dont have a lot, DP wants to spend $600ish but i want to spend up to $1000 which we could do if we layby it

any advice would be great

$600, my dp said my limit was $200 and to try TM!

He's since changed his mind after going to look at some bridal sets behind my back!

He keeps asking me which I prefer and design, tbh I don't mind...

Go to a few shops and barter with them until you get the best price, there is a huge mark up on jewellery and places like Michael Hill expect you to ask for a discount.

We spent quite a lot on our wedding rings, both DH and I got white gold and I have10 diamonds in mine and had it made to fit my engagement ring

ETA - there are a lot of sales in jewellery stores at the moment

Also with white gold you need to factor in the cost of regularly re-plating it

Interest free HPs are good.

I think $600 is a reasonable price, you can get alot for that now. Even look for a ring worth $100+ thats reduced to $600 and tell people its worth original price hehe

I also like gold, but i normally wear silver so if i were to get gold it would match any of my other jewelery

i love white gold but its so expensive

I would recommend having a look at an independent jewelers, we did this and I got a much nicer ring for the same price or a little bit cheaper than what we saw at Michael Hill. It might be worth a look anyway!

I had never worn yellow gold before my engagement / wedding rings, only white gold & silver. DH chose my ring and I always thought my wedding rings would be gold anyway, not sure why!

Go with gold

Go with your DF & show him settings you like. Give him your opinion on what stones you want & also go with an open mind.

Let him make the ultimate decision. Trust me you will be surprised for the good .

I was 21 when I got engaged & we did this & I knew I didn't want all diamonds & wanted a different stone. We were looking at light sapphires & I hated them I spotted a onyx ring & and went wow that is wicked....

I ended up with a really dark sapphire that is almost black & was far bigger than I imagined it would be. Over a decade later I'm still in love with both I also decided on my own wedding ring which is a plain band, cause I knew that I'd be digging in the garden & baking stuff & I still wanted to wear my wedding ring.

Now to nail him down for my eternity ring

I think $500 is a good roundabout price, not too much but not cheap junk. And ALWAYS barter!!

Wish my DP could read this, he has such high tastes, my "birth of my son ring" was $1200 platinum and diamond ring which i am so paranoid about loosing and getting it dirty when i am outside. I hate to think what he will get for an engagement ring.

I got white gold, DH got gold. I don't like gold on myself, I think it looks weird with my skin colour. Getting them replated isn't very expensive if you shop around, i've had varying prices between $30-80 per ring. But one good thing about getting them replated is that you can ask the jeweler to check the claws holding the stones to make sure they are secure. If I had a gold ring I don't know that I'd ever think to do that on a regular basis. It would suck to loose a stone!

We got my bridal set for $400, so Engagement ring and band I love it, its quite simple but still has the bling And most people have complimented it!

Just to give you an idea of what you can get for a cheaper price. But go with what you like, I was never worried about a ring, would rather spend the $$ on other things but love that I have one

oh thats pretty bex! thats the kind of ring that i want simple but bling

the other thing i was thinking about was getting a ring with a black stone- first ring DP got me had a black stone and i loved it (before i lost it!) i could get a simple ring but with a black stone so it was different (for DP) there is so much to think about!

I would love to get new rings one day, I really don't like mine It was a family heirloom which I had re-designed and there was only so much I could do with it.
I am a silver person too and my rings are gold. I often find myself taking them off because they don't match... maybe one day I will prefer gold, although I am still waiting for that day.

i would second the independent jewelers.

I can't really remember exactly but we got my wedding ring made by a jeweler and it was much much cheaper then my engagement ring! Mine has 10 diamonds (small ) in it and I choose that as sometimes I take my engagement ring off cos it sticks out a bit more and I still wanted some bling on with just my wedding ring. they have some great ideas and are able to compromise to your budget.

although in saying that Michael hill etc often have some good sales!

It is white gold and I find the re-plating cost ok given that it is only once a year.

Michael Hill Jewellers is one of the most expensive jewellers around in terms of the chains... and their jewellery is no better quality than other jewellers. I got mine there because I have family that work there and we get a really good discount.

Yellow gold vs. White gold depends on your skin tones and which suit you better. Does the silver look or the gold look suit your skin tones better? Also which do you like better? I like white gold better. It's helpful to know though that you have to get white gold irodium plated (sp?) yearly it's recommended. Or not that often if you don't care too much (I don't). My husband didn't like white gold and was really happy with a ring that was two-toned of yellow and white and brushed. It's very nice - pity he hardly ever wears it! (doesn't like rings). That was so that they semi-matched.

After choosing the stone, you also need to choose the cut. Mine is princess cut - so a square shaped solitaire diamond ring. It's all about what looks pretty on your hand. Once you've nailed the engagement ring, you just find a wedding ring that goes with it. It's all a matter of trying stuff on! That's the fun part!

I can't remember what the rule is - I think one week's wages should go on an engagement ring - or is it one month's? Can't remember. My engagement ring cost something like $2500 and my wedding ring might've been around $300-400, can't remember. My nephew and his wife got silver rings with the idea they would replace them when they could afford it. It's all up to you.

Wow, my rings definitely didn't fit the rule. I wanted something a little bit different for my engagement ring, so I have dark blue sapphires (look black) with diamonds....my wedding band is plain gold. DH's wedding ring is a signet type ring with black onyx and a cubic zirconia. His ring cost just under $600, whereas the two of mine were under $300 combined (all on sale). Here is a pic....

The other ring I am wearing is a diamond one that i got for my 21st birthday.

Just my 2c worth. I worked at a Jewellers for about 3 years through uni and definitely absolutely do not ever pay ticket price for jewellery. Even on every day stuff that isn't on special you can usually get at least 10% off just by asking. On something like an engagement ring you can usually get a lot more off (the markup is phenomenal!) especially if they think there's going to be a repeat purchase for them in the future.

White gold like everyone else has said is iridium plated to give it the bright shiny look. The plating wears off over time and the white gold underneath it is more like very pale yellow than white. So it does need to be re-plated every now and then. It also costs slightly more to get re-sized for the same reason.

Make sure if you get a 9ct or 10ct or 18ct engagement ring that you get your wedding band the same as 9ct is harder than 18ct so if one is 9ct and one is 18ct the 18ct one will wear down (iygwim). 9ct will wear better than 18ct in general for the same reason.

Having a coloured stone like a sapphire is usually cheaper than all diamonds - the exceptions to this are natural rubies and natural emeralds. I wouldn't recommend natural emeralds if you want to wear it every day because they have a bit of a history of fracturing. They're also hideously expensive - the synthetic ones are fine though and not too pricey.

Cluster set rings, with more smaller stones, are heaps cheaper than big stones and give a good amount of bling They're also really pretty!

Budget-wise there are all sorts of "rules" that they say like 2 weeks wages, 3 months (good grief!). But I think those are all just inventions of people who sell jewellery. Spend what you can afford - it's going to look gorgeous as soon as it gets on your finger!

But my #1 piece of advice is try heaps of styles on, even if you're not sure about them when you look at them in the window. I liked the look of lots of rings that just look stupid on my fingers, but in the end I found something absolutely perfect for me. And if you find some things you like but aren't quite right, consider getting one made - it's not that expensive and you can choose things like the quality of the stones to make the price suit your budget.

Sorry for the novel!

I always thought i would have a gold ring too (being traditional and all) but i never wear gold jewellery and my DH ended up buying me a beautiful white gold diamond engagement ring. He shopped around a lot as the style was pretty simple and Patridge Jeweller offered him a fairly good price at $2300 cash (its valued at $2500) and he had found similar rings elsewhere with worse diamonds (smaller, less clarity) for more than that so was pretty happy.

The matching wedding band was $500 and DHs was $750 so not too expensive and again both white gold. Now i am very happy to have them and glad i didnt get gold because i never wear it and i have my silver bangle i always wear from my father so everything matches

i have white gold rings, got them from pascoes. went in there to have a look at one that was on a really good special but i didnt like it, then i saw this bridal set which was also on special (cant even remember how much it was now, i think $900 but i could be wrong.

i love them because they arent too big or flashy but nice and sparkly lol

they have worn a lot though in the year that i have had them. they are quite scratched already. havent had them replated yet but had them cleaned a couple of times. i think they are 9ct. the 18ct ones were way more expensive.

DH's was super cheap, its just silver, $79 from michael hill. we got it like the week before the wedding because we suddenly realised that we didnt have one!

will try and find a pic.

I bought my engagement ring from Pascoes. Refused to go back there for my wedding ring as when I went back in with my engagement ring the lady was sooo pushy and horrible!

I ended up getting my wedding ring made to match- I couldn't find anything I liked! So a local jewellers down here, made it exactly to what was in my head. As soon as I showed the guy my ring, and explained what I wanted, he knew exactly what I wanted! Even though most of the jewellery in the shop was expensive (we saw one guy shopping looking at $8000 engagement rings ) my $800 ring was just as important to him as the guy buying the $8000. Their customer service was awesome! He knew we were young and couldn't afford much, yet we still mattered! (Not like in other stores where they figured out pretty quickly we weren't going to spend $1000+ on a wedding ring. My set all up cost $1600)

DH's ring is a stirling silver one from the Chch markets. It cost $20. He doesn't wear it cos he's a electrician, so he wears it when we go out somewhere... He hates it on his wedding ring finger though, so wears it on his thumb. My brother likes telling him its cos hes under the thumb Hehehe

Nice rings heaf Mine are a bit like yours.

I went for gold.

My engagement ring has 2 small diamonds on the sides & a larger one in the middle which is raised...I did not ware it much when I had kids a it was a bit to sharp when changing nappies so wished I had a different setting in it then...I ware it more now. It cost $1600 approx

I love my wedding ring it has 7 small diamonds in it so it give a nice sparkle & its a bit different form the stranded band, it cost $400 approx

We are looking for my next ring for our 10th wedding anniversary & I want it like my wedding ring with maybe a x over look. So around $500 or under.

When we got engaged we went for dinner with friends & DH bought me a ring from a $2 shop it had a clear glass stone.....it was the funniest thing watching there faces as they tried to droll over it, so when they saw my real one it looked like a million dollar rock...ha ha

oh wedding rings - mine are currently in their box cause my fingers are too fat! I'm soooo looking forward to wearing them again once bubba is out and the body get back to 'normal'!!
I've always worn gold so it was a given to have my wedding rings in gold. We found my engagement ring on Trade Me! it was the only way we would have been able to afford the particular setting/quality - three diamonds in a row sitting above the ring. Some people call it a bridge setting. Because it was blingy i chose a simple plain band for wedding band - which we got at micheal hill but during one of their gold sales, because who wants to pay full price!!

The best thing I did was go pretend shopping with a good friend. She was pretend eternity ring shopping! So we tried on heaps and I was able to work out exactly what i would 'wanted'.
My best friend got married around the same time as me and had a smaller budget, so it worked out cheaper to get hers made an independent jeweler and in 9ct gold instead of the classic 18ct.

I,,,,,,can't be bothered reading the other responses , but , my engagement ring was $1,200 .
It was white gold and aquamarine .
And then , I lost it (or I believe it got stolen)
and I hadn't insured it yet .

Dh bought me a replacement on trademe , for $150
its white gold , with diamonds and has a sapphire stone .

I love it .
At the end of the day , its not how much the ring costs that matters, its what it represents and reminds me of everytime I look at it .

(oh and our wedding rings are both white gold and about $400 )
I have a pic of them , but not my engagement ring

Well, i work for Michael Hill, and have done for about 6 years or so, so we got our rings there.
Full retail, my engagement ring was $2599 and my wedder about $1099 and hubbys about $400.
Try on lots of different styles and types and think about the kind of work you do.
Buy gold or white gold, not silver, because you want something that is going to wear well.
Buy what YOU love, not what everyone else has.
Good luck!

We bought DH a titanium ring, as it is super strong. One of our friends has a white gold ring, which is quite soft and scratches really easily. He is a builder, so has to take his ring off quite a bit.
DH loves his titanium ring, and from memory it was less than $300. We bought it online
Definitely buy something that you love, and dont settle for something that "will do", as you are going to wear it for the rest of you life!!
Oh there is also the option of diamond simulants. I know they are certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but they are cost effective. check out http://secretsshhh.co.nz/index-june-nz

Good luck, and have fun!!!

I have a plain wedding band from Michael Hill bought at the bargin basment price of $180! they were going out of that manufacturer - I really wanted one with 5 small diamonds on it but couldn't find one I liked that went with my engagement ring which is a 3 stone tension set white gold ring (can find my pictures of it!) I also got it in 18 carat as it is supose to stay whiter for longer - my engagment ring is 24carat. If you want to go something different my Dh got his ring made by Ash Hilton - in silver. DH is and electrician so can wear his everday so did want anything to exspensive - I think it was $250 approx.

im a silver girl but have gold rings as the price to replate white gold to me wasnt worth the $$ over the years and they look worn and dull quite quickly.

anyway, my engagement is diamond and aquamarine (very rare stone and my birthstone) which is about $1800 ring down to $1200 and my band is diamonds cost about $600 from $800 i think and DH's plain band was about $300....i also got him a diamond and sapphire engagement ring (my families tradition) which was about $600 on special too...will try and take a pic....

this is our wedders tho

here, hope this turns out, lol his fingers too big thats why hes not wearing it lol he wears it on right ring finger...and mine are swelling so i fit it lol

I second the call about platinum but it's loads more expensive.
For white gold I'd definitely recommend 9ct. 9ct is 37.5 % gold, whereas 18ct is 75% gold. The other metals are what gives it the white colour (and also why white gold is more expensive than yellow gold - because they put more silver etc in... I think). So with a higher amount of the yellow gold in it, the plating wearing off is way more obvious.

Definitely don't go silver, it doesn't last and it's really soft so it can deform with body heat etc. Fine for stuff you don't wear every day but just not long lasting enough for a wedding set.

Regardless of the setting of any stones, it's a really good idea to get them checked regularly. Most chain stores do this - you can get them cleaned at the same time and they'll be all pretty and sparkly again!

Titanium rings, especially for guys, are awesome. That's what DH has. Just be aware that they can't be re-sized so choose carefully and tell DH to not lose or put on too much weight

Also re: weight, for anyone who's UTD and fingers are swelling, take the rings off early. I've lost count of the number of rings I've had to cut off pregnant ladies who waited a bit too long.

My engagement ring is from a local jeweller who just so happened to be our old neighbour many years ago. The only reason I have this ring is because mum and dads house got burgled, the only things they stole were 2 ps2 two tvs and mums ring that she had made from her mums and grandmothers gold and SIL mum's ring. So sentimental jewellery really, Mum decided she didn't want anything new as it wouldn't mean the same so gave me the insurance money.

My ring is 18ct yellow gold with diamonds the stone in the middle is a yellow diamond. It looks like a flower :) underneath it has little hearts

the other ring was my 20th present, white gold with sapphire and diamonds.

I saw the most gorgeous ring today, diamond and dark sapphire (yellow gold) which had I not read this thread I wouldn't have looked at twice. But I tried it on and it was stunning! It was only $200 at cash converters lol.

I've been going on about it all day but DP remains clueless... Oh well. He'll just have to pay full retail for an identical ring when (If?) he decides to pop the question.

We got my engagement ring when we were over in Ireland (DF is from Ireland and we were over there so I could meet the parents). We took his Mum out to look for rings with us, I narrowed it down to my 2 favourite ones and let her choose. She was stoked. Lucky for me she chose the most expensive one Mine is platinum and cost the equivilent of NZ$4000. The other ring I had chosen was white gold but as I want to wear it 24/7, platinum was the better option. Even then, I've had to get it fixed a few times cause I give it a fair bashing lol. It's always getting scratched!

If you have it where you live try Goldmark jewellers, they have a lot of nice rings and the prices are good. My wedding ring was $500, it is white gold and one of the ones where it has the row of diamonds across the top (sorry can't remember what the style is called).

I believe DH got my engagement ring from Michael Hill, and I got my eternity ring made from a local jeweller.

White gold is really nice, I prefer it. The only annoying thing about it is the replating, it's about $60 and you're supposed to do it every 6 months but to be honest Ive only done it once in the 2-3 years Ive had all my rings and they look fine.

Gold rings do have that bonus of not having to be replated and they seem to just always stay looking the same.

I didnt really make the choice between white gold or yellow gold as my engagement ring was a surprise.
