Just wondering how all you girls were anaesthetised?
I had a spinal with my last one in the UK but can see that many women had an epi and some a GA. What are my options over here as it's my first caesar over in NZ. Anyone had a caesar in Nelson? -------------

Hey sarah, I had my DD by c-sect in april up in Nelson hospital. It was considered an 'emergency' one as she was posterior and pushing down so much my cervix was swelling. I was given a spinal just before 3pm, had her out and it had worn off by about midnight. They made me stay in bed till lunch the next day then got me up for a shower etc.... The operating staff were fantastic and all the midwives (apart from one) were abosolotely the best thing! Im not sure what the options are for elective c-sects but I would try for a spinal as the recovery is much quicker. PM me if you want to know more about nelson  -------------

ive had an epi for the first and a spinal for the 2nd. They wont give you a general unless something is going wrong and they have to get baby out REAL fast. I preferred the spinal over the epi. If you're having an elective they wont give you an epi, they'll do a spinal which is MUCH nicer!
i had Lily at 10.30am and was out of bed 12 hours later. Wanted to have a shower but I felt a bit dodgy so they made me wait til the next day. Had full feeling back after 6 hours. ------------- Alex, Thomas and Lily http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

| Hi, I'm in Taranaki so can't comment on Nelson specifically, but my first two c-sects were generals- first was emergency, second was a "crash" i.e they had to get her out immediately, my third & fourth were both electives (so will be the next one in november) & they were both spinal. Definitely far quicker recovery, & was much nicer to be able to see baby before everybody else had! |

I had a spinal for an elective.
I didn't realise you could do an epi fora c-sect. What's the difference between an epi and a spinal? The strength of the anaesthetic? |

I had a spinal (it was an elective). The only thing I didn't like was that I could wiggle my toes the whole time so I thought it wasn't working! lol -------------  My beautiful 2 girls...nearly 4 and 13 months

i had epi with my 1st,with my 2nd i had both spinal and epi ..as epi lure stayed in for awhile unsure why..due to have my 3rd soon unsure what will happen..spinal numbs faster i think.. -------------   http://lilypie.com">

Tishy its the location it is placed that is the difference.
Electives are given spinals and some emergencies, though most emergencies the patient already has an epi in so they just top it up stronger than they would for a Vaginal Delivery. GA are usually only done for crash sections. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but that is the general practise -------------

Thanks everyone for replying. I'm relieved that spinals seem to be standard. I didn't want an epi and the spinal worked for me last time so I'm keen to go for it again. I like that Aethalia had a positive experience at Nelson Hosp, I've only been in there for some CTG monitoring at 28 weeks and I saw one midwife and no one else. Thanks y'all. -------------

| I've not had an epi, guess it depends on the circumstances. With my first they'd attempted the spinal 7 times (ow- & I only know that because my midwife said), then ds's condition worsened & my blood pressure went wacko, so some lovely man with sparkly eyes stuck a mask over my face & I came to 4 hours later, =). They had to try a couple of times for the spinal with my third, anethetist wound up in tears (she was quite young) & someone else did it. Last one was no problems, =) |

I had epi's with both of mine, I had one going into my 3rd day of being in labour with DS and within an hour his heart rate went down the crapper so they topped it up and whisked me off to thatre, otherwise I'd have gone under a GA.
With DD (elective) it took several attempts to do an epi and I ended up with wicked bruising all the way down my back! Hoping they dont make such a hash job of it this time!! ------------- Brandon - 05/12/2003

I had an epi for my first which was an emergency C section, I already had an epi in place and they just topped me up.
For my second I had an elective C Section and they gave me a spinal with a slow release morphone in it too, for pain relief afterwards. I prefered the spinal! ------------- |

I had spinal for my c sect but then I hadn't had any pain relief until then, I am guessing if the patient already had epi then they would just top it up, but I am sure I read somewhere that the spinal works faster which would be why they use for c sect.
Glad to say they got it in first pop for me although I don't remember it much either...think I was too worried about baby. I've had GA twice too (been an adventurous time trying for baby) and that is super sonic weirdo.....in some ways really fascinating to wake up and be like huh??..but in some ways kinda creepy ya know! Would def never choose that for c sect unless had to get baby out right now. -------------

The one thats worse than a GA is the one they give you to make you 'forget' what happened, and you stay awake... but have no recollection of being awake for that time... and when you come out if it, it feels like you are waking up... had that for my lap gallstone retrieval few months back... hideous feeling knowing you've been awake but cant remember what happened 5 minutes before! ------------- Brandon - 05/12/2003
