Hey ladies!
OK so I have a serious love of discussing names and since my husband is so sick of hearing me talk names all day long I'm turning my focus to OB

I thought the pregnancy section is the best place to put this as most of you preggys ladies are thinking of names as well (By the way I'm not pregnant just TTC)

So go nuts. What are your likes and dislikes. Your opinion may help other lovely preggy ladies come up with names :)

**** PLEASE NOTE****
None of this is to be taken personally. Everyones tastes are different feel free to tell us what kinds of names you do or don't like but don't single people out. Also don't take offense if you see someone talking about a name on your short list. This is all meant for fun and to give others ideas

So I guess I'll get things rolling :)

I'm so freakin picky it's not funny lol. I love tradional names. I prefer them to only be one or two syllables and I'm not a fan of unique spellings. For our girls we went with Hazel Ada & Esme Lily.

So for our next baby my top two names are
Stella Rae for a girl or
Beau for a boy but I can't seem to find a middle name that sounds good with Beau.

Also on my short list
girl -
Estelle, Lucy, Maggie, Ruby
Boy -
Noah, Jerome, Rex

I adore the name James cause of my Grandpop but can't/won't use it cause of another family member.

Same as I like the name Dave but would never use it cause it's my Dad's name.

Cause DH & I have different names we wanted our kids to have different names but ones they won't hate like we have! Although Cooper is quite common now days!

I love the names Caitlyn, Catriona, Joshua, Lachlan, Sara, Claire, Eileen, Finn.

I'm sure I'll think of more!

We like traditional names but not popular ones.

We've also had lots of pets with proper people names that puts me off ever using them on the kids. ie; Max, Rufus.

I also like names that translate well into adult hood. ie: James/Jamie, William/Wil
Our girls picks are Catherine or Poppy. Poppy came about cause I'm due around the 11th of November.

I hate alternative spellings too, Jackson I like Jaxon just make me think the parents can't spell.

Growing up with an unusual name that I hated, and am forever correcting the spelling or pronunciation.

There are a lot of Grandma and Grandpa names around at the moment some work some don't.

Lisa, Mac was going to be Beau but we had the same issue with the middle name so gave up and went with Mac instead.

I don't like popular names as always feel sorry for kids that have to be called their name plus their initial.

I actually spent 6 months studying and collating all the names in the Saturday papers so I could avoid all the common names.

I don't like very old fashioned names, but I don't like very modern names .
And TBH , tho I love the names I have on my kids , they were never ones that growing up were my fave name .
Caitlyn is Caitlyn Rhianna , and I chose the Y because when I looked in the name book , with an I it means Pure , with a Y it means pure beauty .

Tyler is Tyler Brin and DH chose Tyler after Brad Pitt's character in Fight Club (rolls eyes ) and Brin is after my grandfather .

THIS one , will be Ryan for a boy , or Alysha for a girl (I like Ys in names, well , I don't really care that much , but the other 2 have Ys so Y not this one )
I have no idea for middle names tho , so any suggestions would be great .

I love the name Stella , I know 2 Stellas , one is a Stella Rose the other is a Stella Kate

Oooh I love talking names too! I'm finding it really really hard to find a boy's name this time round, but we'll get there in the end I spose

I'm also a fan of traditional-ish type names and not a huge fan of random spellings of traditional names. Last time I was in Australia there was a kid in the playground called Banjo and on one of our recent visits home to NZ I heard a mother calling her son Turtle..... each to their own though!

For my own kids, DH and I like Irish and Scottish names because of our family heritage. I think girls names are far easier to come up with, there are so many more options!

I love names like James and Daniel but we can't use them because I have close family members called James and Daniel (same goes for nearly every other traditional boy's name around! Lots of boys in our families).

For girls I like oldfashioned pretty names and for boys I like orignal not very common names.

DS is Cody Quinn though I kinda wish that we had made him Cody Dean as that sounds better.

My top girl name at the moment is Clara Louise and top boy names are Logan and Joe.

I like Beau as well .

I hear ya on traditional Irish and Scottish names for boys, especially when boys were automatically named after their father / grand father there isn't a lot of variation.

I also like royal names they're also reasonable common so no troubles with spelling.
We're not christian however some biblical names are nice.

I've found it interesting that my friends with popular names themselves have given their children more unusual names. My friend Rachel named her girls Aaliyah and Delta.

I like alsorts of names.

I like old fashioned names & also modern names. I do like different spelling but easy to pronouce. I choose Taylah instead of Taylor

Im a huge fan of Unisex names on girls.

My top names at the moment for a girl would be Aurora & Emerson.

Boys are really hard i have no idea. I like Caleb, Ryan, Josh, Jake, Jacob, Blake. Simple names like this.

I love the name Stella!! its lovely Lisa and would go with your girls name too

ETA: I love the name Ruby. But dp hates it lol

When I was little I always thought it was cool when there was someone else in the class with the same name as me... infact my best friend had the same first and last name - I think that's the only reason we were friends

DF and I struggle to agree on names, but for this one we are thinking Kasey for a boy and possibly Abby for a girl (he doesn't like abigail so would have to be abby)...

my fav boys names are Elliot, Luka, Ari, Lewis and Finn none of which DF likes...

For girls I love Ruby, Willow, and Greta but DF doesn't...

I've had to add Ruby to my short list now lol I loooove it! Beau James is quite good. It's almost impossible to find anything to go with Beau. I suppose I don't have to give a boy a middle name but the girls have one so for the sake of uniformity I don't think I could do it

I have always wanted Rex as it's my Dads name but DH hates it so Beau is my next fav. Fo awhile I loved Noah Dean but Noah is really popular at the mo so it's put me off a bit.

Hahaha Turtle Very cute as a pet-name (I call DD possum ) but not so cool as an actual name!

I like most names, but have an issue with names spelt uniquely, and prefer not surnames used as first names.

I could have 10 daughters and name them all easily, but man, did we struggle to come up options for boys!

at the moment I'm liking Payton/Peighton or Leighton for boy or girl. Blair I like for boy or girl too. I think I like unisex names haha

Before DD came about DP was thinking of Celeste only because of my obsession with angels (I have a collection of them) we decided early on in the mix that DD would be called Honiana (honeybun) Teuila (a flower) Baileigh. DP wanted a different spelling for Baileigh because we both worked hospo and he didn't want people thinking we were naming her after baileys if DD had been a boy it would have been Honiana Taulagi (his grandads name) Baileigh. After she was born we both admitted that we probably would have changed the boys name

Other names thrown round for a boy Julius Anateria Edwin the initials would have been the letters of the way DP spelt one of his names

I like Anihera/Anahera ummm let me think

I haven't read everyones posts but...

I really love traditional names too and I like proper spelling of names too, none of this Nickhole stuff when it's usually spelt Nicole iygwim!

For some unknown reason I really like the names Winifred, Gertrude, Florence... Although would never name a child that.

I really like the name James for a boy or Eli which dp hates. I don't think I would pick Eli though.

I don't know what I will name the next kid though, we were just lucky dds name goes with DPs surname! Nothing seems to sound 'right' with Simmons.

The other thing is I spent most of my childhood wanting a different name so I am VERY picky! Imo it's hard naming a child because they are going to be stuck with that name for the rest of their lives unless they choose to get a name change of course!

Just read the posts, middle names we're doing on tradition as in my family girls have 2 middle names and one is either Anne or Annette so Lily's is Anne Maria and while if I have another daughter hers should theoretically be Annette I think I may break the tradition there... I quite like Sharna for a girl's first name but only because MIL is Ana and my mum is Sharon and I felt kinda sad for my mum as Maria is MIL middle name but my mum didn't really get anything in dds name as her middle name is Annette...

For a boy, he will have 1 middle name like dp does.

I also got the impression that it wasn't just a nickname, but I could have been wrong about that!

Cute nicknames are cool!

Isn't it funny how you can really love a name but not for your own child. Eg I really love names like Ruby and Scarlett but they just wouldn't go with our surname so they're not even an option. I am a big fan of Eli or Elijah for a boys name.

Alysha is pretty different spelling , usually I would spell it the traditional way of Alicia , but as I said , I want the Y .

My favourite girl names are
Olivia
Jessica
Emily
Amelia

My favorite boy names are
Luka
Finn
Tyson
Jay

but DH doesn't like any of them , hes pickier than I am .
I was going to Alysha Grace for this one , but he doesn't like Grace , so now I dont know, we can't have anything starting with R or S for the middle name cos our surname starts with S and I don't want an ASS or an ARS for a daughter

I do like some unusual names, some are quite pretty .
My best friend's girl is Akeisha , and even tho I thought of Rikki Lake when I first heard it , I can't imagine her being anything else .
I knew another girl who had a Sharnia , which sounded pretty when said out loud (sha -nee a )
and my friend called her daughter Payton , which I also like .

I am not a fan of common names and could just not name my child anything in the top 50 or more. I have so many friends called the same names and to me its just boring. My name is not unusual, but not spelt the usual way but the french way. My middle name is also uncommon. I have to spell it all the time but I don't mind.

I have no idea what we would call our next baby if we had another girl but I have a few names if we had a boy next. My DD is Heidi Nicole.

I like for a boy: Jozef (one of my Dads many names & dutch spelling) Elijah, Dylan, Luka, Xavier

For a girl I would like Xanthe but our last name starts with Y and the initials XY would not be fair for a girl.

I'm not so keen on the name Beau but mostly because a girl I know called her daughter it and it made no sense to me!

Ohhh I like Jonty and Willem

I like all sorts of names. For my own kids I will try to choose ones that aren't so popular but aren't "out there" either.

I was surprised at some of the reactions we've had to "Jude" because I didn't really think it was that strange.

Most people who comment on his name check the gender again to make sure he is a boy (I don't mind this at all, totally understandable) - some people TELL us that it is a girls name as if we are stupid and didn't know we had picked a girls name for our boy

My mother in law told us she had a few problems getting her head around it (she is very traditional) - that surprised me as Jude is from the bible! DP's grandparents thought we had named him Jade for a while

Most peoples first thoughts though (the ones that don't comment but I've asked them about it later) usually are the "Hey Jude" song by The Beatles and Jude Law the actor

My grandfather was super stoked we had Mason as a middle name - he thought that was awesome and keeps asking us how we thought of it as he hadn't heard of it since he was a small boy. Sometimes I wish we could use Mason as a first name for our next child if it is a boy because I really like the name!

All names we choose are ones that we just like. We don't really like the thought of naming our kids after anyone.

We also keep secret our shortlist of names until baby is born. NOT because we are scared of anyone stealing them or anyone criticizing them - we just like surprising people. They probably don't even care but we do We are weird like that.

And I like seeing other peoples lists of names - hypocrite eh!

Names I like but probably won't use:

Joey
Jesse
Cooper
Oliver
Tash
Taylor
Tessa
Lucy

Its funny when people comment on your kids names.

I have Macauley and Frano. I got asked the other day "where their father was from?"....umm, here.

People hardly ever pronounce Franos name right and often when I fill in forms people check with me as they think I have left out a K or C in it (Franko).

I never intended to have really different names for my boys it just kinda happened.

There is such nice names coming out. I am tempted to have a 3rd

I love Aurora and Arabella. DP didn't like Aurora though. When i was pregnant with Kaelen we had actually picked Arabella if it was girl, but then by the time we had Isabella we had changed our minds. I was SO annoyed that Isabella was used in Twilight. lol. I had decided not to use the name because of that but then it was the only name DP would agree on. Bloody males. lol.

I'm picking the average person is a bit thick when its comes to names.
Frano reminds me of Frano Botica its a popular name in Crotia.
Jude is such a boys name from the Bible of course and I would have thought Jude Law would make it popular.
They're probably getting mixed up with Judy as a lof older ladies have this name and get called Jude for short.

There are a lot of scottish surnames that make awesome first names - Campbell, Fraser, MacKenzie, Lindsay.

OMG thats so funny Dean was always my pick for a middle name as it's my FIL's middle name but I think it's sounds awful with Beau lol. It's sounds really redneck when you say the two together almost like it's one name

Lol, I know, I had a friend called Beau-Dean in school. It's funny what appeals to some people. But hey, it was a suggestion lol.

Theres lots of names i LIKE, but wont use for this one as they just dont 'go' with my other 2 (one ends on DON, the other in LYN, so it needs to sound similar, but not spelt the same lol)

Problem is all the names i like that fit our criteria, DP doesnt... well, the girls name anyways, we had Locklyn Ian or Austin Leslie for a boy while preg with Jae, and will use Austin Leslie for a boy this time around. I also like middle names that have a repeating sound from the first name...

BranDon Douglas (the D's)

JaelyN ANNie AlaiNa (N's)

For a girl so far I have

Teagan
Tamsen
Reighan
Morgan
Lilyan
Kerran
Corinne
Corbin
Addysen
Palen
Ashten
Chevonne
Briahn
Kaedin
Dylan
Paeton
Edin/Eaden

Not in any particular order, but I like Addysen and Tamsen the most so far... stuck in middle names though....

Interesting about having names that sound the same, my brother and I have names that both end in R - Fleur and Blair and we were forever ignoring our mother cause we thought she was calling the other.
My Uncle is Barry and people were forever getting him and my brother mixed up, at one time they've both been called Blarry

I like Beau as well. Very cool name. Except I can't help but think of Mr Bojangles when I say it. Lol. Silly.

I'm not sure there are any names I completely dislike (I don't think I like names like Bus Shelter 22 etc but I'm not really sure who WOULD like them - surely even the people that came up with the name can't truly like it (or their poor baby )). For sure, there are names I wouldn't call my baby but when I hear of them or see them on other kids - I think "Hey, that is such a cool name and completely suits your kid!". It's not because I don't LIKE the name, I just don't feel like it would suit our kid. If that makes any sense.

I love most surnames as first names, particularly for boys - for Spence we tossed up between that and Fletcher, and originally we wanted to call a boy Cooper but friends and family killed that idea before we had him

I don't like the name Beau, don't know why but what if you didn't have a middle name at all?

Or you made Beau the middle name and chose something else for first name?

Just don't call him Rain/Rein Beau!

My little one is Esme Grace. DP is a secondary school teacher and we 'ruined' twilight for some of the older student. I like the series but it was DPs name choice. He later told me he went to school with an Esme and that's where he got the name from.

If we were having a boy we would have had Lucas but didn't settle on a middle name. Our other girls name was Aria. We will probably think of a whole new list when #2 comes along (hopefully in the next year!)

In 20 years time no one will remember Twilight. My name comes from a character in a movie and a book, that came out in 1972 I know a few Fleur's the same age as me.
Only older people remember the book/movie. I've never seen or read it.

Its not about people remembering Twilight but more that the name becomes more popular I think once people hear it IYKWIM, so therefore Arabella which we wanted to shorten to Bella is then going to be rather popular once she gets to school

I didn't want to pick an overly popular name, although Lily is popular, it had real special meaning behind it for us so that over ruled everything else, but there will probably be a few Lily's around when she starts school, although I haven't heard of many mums choosing that as a name, maybe 3 or 4

ok so I jumped to the end to comment on Lisa's middle name issue for Beau.  (sorry if others have already made suggestions).  When you mentioned you couldn't think of a middle name to go with Beau, the name Levi quickly jumped into my mind!  My Dh's step brother is beau.  It's a cool name.  But yeah I liked the sound of Beau Levi.

I love Eva and Cassidy for girls names.  I suggested Cassidy for all but 1 of our babies but Dh wasn't into it.

I love Cairo and Caius for boys.  Gia was going to be Caius if she was a boy.  But that name was forgotten about when Jett came along.  And my sister had a girl called kaia after Gia was born so we couldn't use Caius after that, sounded just like Kaia's.

My list of names I like has shortened a lot since having kids.  When I was in my teens I had a fetish for thinking up names and came up with Reef, Shinae and a few others then I started to hear people calling their children these names and thought but hey!  I thought of that!  Haha.  Of course Dh never liked them when we started having kids.

Ooh fun & helpful thread :)

Our names list is:

Boys:
Harry
Joseph
Liam
Edward
Rhys
Xavier
- the last 3 DH doesn't like tho.
At the moment Joseph is winning, middle name will be Robert (after DH's stepdad)

Girls:
Hannah
Jade
Paige
Bridget
Elizabeth
Gabrielle
Juliet
Violet
- Hannah is winning at the moment, middle name will be Lesley (after my beautiful and dearly missed Mum).

I had way more to begin with but DH said no & now I've forgotten heaps of them! We've found girls names quite hard, lots I like but can't use because they don't work with Lesley (like Hayley, which would've definately been 1st choice if I hadn't insisted on Lesley as a middle name for a little girl if we have one. DH is happy with it though, you can't exactly disagree with your wife who's Mum is dead & is struggling just to get thru pregnancy without her Mum by her side). Ok now I made myself all upset again Going to go do something to keep myself busy & wait on bubs to kick me and help cheer me up (s/he is so good at it, just seems to know when I need a good beating from the inside to pick me up!)

OMG i get that all the bloody time! It's REALLY annoying. I had Isabella on my list of names before i even knew Twilight existed. I changed my mind about using it coz i knew it would become really popular but then it was the only name DP would agree to.

Oooo Brinleigh ... very pretty. Never heard of that before!

I was named after a random headstone and the obituaries Mum kept looking through the babies born newspaper section and when she couldn't find one she liked she gave up and scanned through the deaths (as you do, just in case) and came across Evelyn which she really liked. Near the end of the pregnancy her and Dad visited a family member's grave and spotted my name on a neighbouring grave - she said it must've been a sign, to help her remember that she like the name and so they used it. How morbid is that?!

I hate naming children with DH.. he likes stupid names and doesnt like the names I do!

We have decided on a girls name finally.... Zoe Elizabeth Christina.

Elizabeth is my mums middle name and Christina is my Nans middle name.

I am not normally a fan of more than one middle name but I couldnt decide which name to use we are using both

I also liked:
Ruby (I am sure some of you remember my battle with DH about this name last time!).
Stella (but it is becoming very popular again, damn you Tori Spelling!).
Breana
Poppy

Boys gah! We have used the name we liked already!!!
Mason
Roman
Finn
Marcus
Fletcher

I am having total brain freeze because there are more on each list but I just cant think of them....

Mel I quite like Roman and also Marcus which I've not heard much in NZ but it's fairly common in Germany.
We had so many boys names on our list but are struggling finding girls names.

Our first choice is Emily. However its quite popular so we are still hoping to find something else but after reading name book after name book we've sort of given up!

I've never really thought about how hard it is to name a child! There are so many factors to consider, it's almost a sience it seems.

I'm interessted to know why most people are choosing to have a middle name as well? My brother and I don't have middle names and I never thought I'd want one for my child. However my husband is Maori and we are considering using a Maori middle name to include that part of her heritage in her name (unlsess we find a really nice Maori first name in which case we won't be using a middle name)

My DH doesnt have one either (nor does his brother) My MIL (english speaking south african) refused to get involved in the family politics of FIL (afrikaans speaking south african) family middle names..

DH leaves middle names up to me because he doesnt really care.. but I hate him not having one. Its so frustrating.. how else do you know you are in trouble LOL I knew I was in for it when I heard mum or dad say "Melanie Jane".

When I am annoyed with DH he gets Jason No Name, doesnt quite sound the same LOL

I grew up with a Marcus (in my year at school, very small town) so its not an unusual name to me..

We have decided on Johan for a middle name if this bubs is a boy (FIL middle name is Johannes and Dads middle name is John so Johan is a nice comprimise).

Jake most likely would have been Emily had he been a girl. DH really loved it and I did too but once I got pg it just didnt feel right anymore....

Maybe its an english thing to have middle names, I know of a few europeans who don't have them.
I have a few english friends who have kept their maiden names as middle names, maybe that's where the middle name thing comes from.
Especially as people like to use names of relatives for their middle names.
A lot of the old scottish clans used to keep both their mother's and father's names when naming their children, especially when every other boy was called James or Hamish, it was a way of identifying whose kid they were.
That's my completely un-substantiated take on naming conventions, I love reading about British history and names are a an important part of it.

We found picking names (or rather agreeing on them) so so hard!!! Girls names we found hard as something would remind of someone or sound similar to someone we didn't like haha.

Im not very keen on popular names (that everyone is using at the moment) but nothing to out there and weird either.

Ive always wanted to name my boy Carlos (after my dads middle name as not to keen on Juan) but I also like the name Zack (which is brothers name), Marcus is also quite a nice boys name.

Have always hated my name and haven't come across many others with the same name, naming a kid after a greasy song is not the way to go haha

I also very much like the name Johanna but not the way its pronounced in English, ie the 'Joe anna' Hence it not being on our list.
Argh, the more I think about the names issue the more frustrated I get
Emily has been in the top 10 for the past 5 years or so, at least that means its not just a phase and people will hear it in years to come and wonder about how strange it is.
But I'd still prefer a less popular name if I could just find one.

Emily is a very traditional name, also if you look more closely at the popular names list... There were 266 girls registered with the name Emily last year, spread over the population its not that many.

I'm biased though my 9 year old niece is called Emily and she's incredibly cute. Blue eyed / blonde haired little sweet heart. She suits her name very well.
