we are on it with my 6 month old.
He took to it straight away. I find if i make it up to the strength on the can he gets bad constipation tho so i only make it 3/4 strength.

We were at the specialist today and was given some to start on. My problem is atm our daughter is exclusively breastfed and doesnt like taking the bottle - so we are about to have that battle, as well as the formula (which he said tastes terrible compared to the shelf stuff)
How long did it take before they were taking it happily? (Briand OlisMum - was he breastfed prior or on regular formula?)
Did either of you try with the golden syrup if things were bad?
Does the subsidy make it affordable? (We were only told the actual price of a tin but that you can get subsidised)
Cheers guys - we're planning on pumping till she'll take a bottle then starting so FX she wont just refuse to feed

hi kim he was breastfed for the first 2 and a half months exclusively but i made sure to give him a bottle of ebm at least once a week so that i knew he would have a bottle. then he went to regular dairy formula top ups in the evening which he reacted badly to so we swapped to soy which smelt real bad but he didn't seem to mind it at all. he also reacted to that so we went to neocate. by this time my milk had dried up. he didn't seem to mind the watered down neocate. we started on half strength.

Hi we used golden syrup, to get miss use to it, she was bf until 6 months, but it was all to stressful low weight gains etc. We were lucky she took bottle fine,so dont have much advice on taking bottle sorry, good luck it may take a bit of time just be patient you will get there.

unfortunately it took ages for DD to take a decent amount of it! (but she has a huge bottle now - of the next stage Neocate). We started offering at maybe 7 months, and it took till 12 months for her to have an ok amount. Vanilla essence worked ok for us, it helps to disguise the tatse a little.
Exclusively BF babies may take quite a while to adjust to bottles, and typically they won't drink as much as bottle fed babies, as they're used to only drinking what they need at the time. When DD started, 30mL was a good amount! Just do it at the same time every day, and keep offering.... but don't get stressed about it, as we found any time we tried to 'force' the bottle on her, it just backfired.
the tins work out at about $7 a tin, but only 400g tins, so the cost will really depend on how much she's having. If WINZ are still co-operating you may be eligible for a child disability allowance if your DD has moderate+ allergies (I'm assuming that's maybe why she's on neocate?)

thanks for your replies!
Its not quite what we were expecting, more to go down the road of me eliminating all sorts of food for my diet but looks like that plain wont be enough. So a shock to me and her having to stop BFing, but whatever works best for her in the end!
That actually is a good price considering theyre like $150. That nearly floored me! Pretty similar to supermarket prices i suppose for normal stuff.

Just to let you know my experience, I was on a strict elimination diet for a long time & that obviously for us still didn't cut it.
We've just given up on breastfeeding & after 4 days got massive withdrawals/detox from B/M, refusing food & bottles!! But a couple of days later he was gutsing down the neocate & gaining weight again. Was a bit hair raising but he's so much happier and skin and bowels good. Wish I'd done it a long time ago, but the process we went through meant that we didn't til a few weeks ago.
We also started on LCP at half strength and worked up to full strength. I tried icing sugar and then brown sugar did the trick to get him to like it. This is while still having breast milk. I also topped up with rice milk but that is a BAD idea as he then reacted to it so had to go to the brown sugar. I would try blending with breast milk, it's to get that funky taste in with something sweet. I'm not sure if it's recommended to blend with breast milk though. We then got a script for advanced so had to wean over to that. The idea is to change one scoop a day, I did it a bit faster than that, I guess it depends on how sensitive your bub is when you come to that point. We are now on 7/8th strength. Full strength is too much for him.
So what I'm sorta saying is start at half way. So half the recommended scoops for that amount of water. Once that is being drunk happily then increase the amount of scoops per bottle. You might need to increase this at one scoop a day or you could get away with one a bottle. Your bub might never get to full strength in a bottle but will get the correct amount of scoops per day over slightly more bottles.
We pay $6.15 a can & am going through a can every 2 1/4 days!

BriAnd OlisMum: Yeah we were referred to a pediatric skin specialist and he was the one to make the call. But he gave sound reasoning, and 100% knew his stuff and was passionate talking about it, so felt good coming away from him, even if it wasnt what we'd planned.
Wow sounds like can be an adventure getting it happening - will research to see if i can mix with BM to start - i read that u can with other formula but with BM who knows!
A+Cs mum: I'm glad you got there in the end, wowzers the can doesnt sound like it lasts , might have to get selling more stuff on TM (lol)

Kim, I think the overall price is comparable to store bought formula. Most of them are $12-14 for a 900gm can.
But yes can be an added expense when you thought that you'd breastfeed.
Good luck, let us know how you are getting on. There is a neocate kids chat group on yahoo groups if you want more back up & support.

Well just as an update, we decided to try her on a bottle of it Saturday night as she'd taken to the bottles of BM reasonably well, and she just drunk it. So we've switched and so far so good, altho we've done normal strength which im now a little concerned about. Lets hope she poops huh?
Now just to wait and see if things all clear up, then we'll be asking for our subsidy number or whatever it is too!

Yay Kim we never diluted the neocate down - Nat always had it at full strength (although she was a little older than your DD and on solids when we started).
The approval number can take a couple to a few weeks to come through, so hopefully your specialist is onto it already?

yeah im the same as peanut...3.49 a tin here in chch..
and yeah the paed applies for the special number and you use that to order....so then you buy either 1 or 3 months at a time...so it was only 100 something for 30 tins for us.. so glad she took the bottle...
blondy Liam will only take 30 mls..so that is a good thing..lol glad he isnt the only one who has issues:(!! I'm going quite mental with people telling me to starve him:(

Def get onto your pead re the special authority number as mine took close to 2 weeks to come thru and we had gone thru 5 tins in the time. The paed gave as 2 tins and I had to ring for 2 more, then a friend gave us a tin too. Def worth following up on sonner rtaher than later.
Yeah, I get it direct from Thermo Fisher and its free delivery. Do you get it just couriered to your home or is the chemist putting a mark up on it for processing?

Just called specialist today, they seem to think theyll have a number by the end of the week - but we'll see heh.
Elfsmum: only takes 30mls at a feed?
Do they seem to take less neocate than a different formula? The most C will take is 120mls, and normally around 90mls in a feed - whereas i know people with their children of the same age on 'normal' formula who are all taking 200-250mls?

kim - it's a volume thing that comes from BF babies... they're used to drinking only as much as they need. It does change though, just slowly - Nat now guzzles back 300mL in one go
It might be partly the taste too - if it tastes half as as it smells.... you wouldn't get me drinking it!

Cooper is now sucking back at least 160ml on a small feed. Earlier on though he would only take 100ml. I think B/F babies need their tummy capacity built up.
I might give Thermo fisher a call I'd love to not have to pay so much! I am only getting it in box qty's at the moment.

Oliver has 210ML each feed, but sometimes before bed at night he will want more so i make him another 100 ML. He has it half strength tho.
Then he has another 210ML during the night and another at 5am. The only problem with this is he pees so much and I am having real problems finding a nappy that will see us through the night, thats sposies and cloth :(

KA gets it from the same place as me.
So we only pay $3.49 a tin and free delivery.
The only things I can think off and I may be completely off track with these things are:
1) Its my understanding that is funded so may depend on level of funding by your DHB?
2) Again, I think up north etc its sent to a pharmacy who dispense it to you - maybe check what you are paying for there services?
Did you call 0800 933 966? I have never been put thru to Nutricia so maybe just try to talk to someone within Thermofisher that seems to know what they are talking about.

Yep I rang that number & I asked for details on ordering neocate & they said that nutricia deals with that now & gave me their 0800 #. I tried to say but I thought you guys did it & she said no that neocate is no longer with them & I have to deal with nutricia.
I think it pays to shop around to get the best price at pharmacy's. Another one said he'd price match for me to the current pharmacy & he also said that he'd get my whole script in & hold it, not like at the moment where I get a box of 4 every week & have to order it over night.
eta - his price was dearer.

We're $6.60 a tin, and i called around about 6 places to get prices lol. But i did ask, and pharmacies aren't supposed to add anything on to the price.
A+Cs mum: all the places i called said they got it in 1 month at a time (so for us 3 boxes) and can order in the morning to get it that afternoon.
Interesting isnt it how they're all so different. Wow cant believe some is only $3 something a tin! May well be the type of funding you are given.
