Just wondering if anyone could share any good snacks for someone trying to avoid: dairy, wheat, egg, rice.
Sorry, and i mean non vege/fruit/meat ideas. Are there brands of crackers or anything that are free of all this? Or do i need to get creative (e.g. neocate as milk substitute, some kind of egg substitute etc and bake a biscuit or something)
Cheers in advance
Kim

Ohh avoiding rice is hard. Can you give chickpeas?? That opens the options re flours. We can't here, mistook a chickpea allergy for a ricemilk allergy, just happened to be what was in the rice milk instead.
We have Kea biscuits. I think they contain rice though. I only give him the vanilla ones.
We also avoid all nasty preservatives, I can't recall if Kea biscuits have them in them cause I decided he needed some form of something normal in his limited diet.
Other than that, we have rice crackers as snacks.
There is a specific egg replacer. Luckily we are ok on egg so haven't tried it. Have you thought about joining the neocate kids chat group, there are some kids on there that can't eat anything. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NeocateKids/ - Yahoo group

Cheers, ill search all that. Its a tricky business, the only one that has shown as an actual allergy is egg - yet DD comes up with head to foot rashes, weepy excema and allergic reaction spots with the others - the rice bit being baby rice (i cant see anythign else in it that would be the issue)
We're currently waiting on results from hair strand testing to see if that helps.
Bri and Olis mum: what supermarket do you go to?

Which baby rice did you try? Maybe test again but grind up & cook the rice yourself? Then you know it's go no extras in it.
Freaken severe intolerances are so frustrating. Allergy is so much easier to diagnose.

Hi Kim i go to new world. My local one is waiuku. Try her on plain rice, like the stuff you eat. my specialist said to give that to oliver while we were waiting for the blood test results.
he said rice (normal rice), kumara, chicken breast with no skin, and fish.

Orgran products tend to be rice or corn based. Check the labels on corn thins - corn is out for us (so I'm not sure), but I have a feeling that these are GF and rice free.
The hospital gave us a small list of recipes which are GF, egg free, milk free, nut free, soy free, corn free and rice free. I haven't tried any yet, as my 18month old DD still can't tolerate any food. For a 7 month old you might want to try:
Pikelets
1 cup flour combination buckwheat, chick pea, ground millet and pea flour.
1 1/2 tsps GF baking powder
2 tablespoons olivani, melted
50ml neocate
150ml lemonade (personally I would use soda water and sugar or juice)
Mix flour and baking powder in a bowl.
Add melted margarine, neocate and lemonade and stir until mixed.
Cook as you would normally.
Vanilla and Peach Quinoa Pudding
60g quinoa grain
40ml apple juice
75ml water
1/2 tsp vanilla essence
1/4 can peaches, drained of syrup
In a pot, bring the first 4 ingredients to the boil together, turn down the heat to low and simmer for 7 minutes, or until the grain has split and is soft.
Add the peaches, stir through and enjoy as a dessert or for breakfast.
Failing that, I made some biscuits from sugar, coconut oil and buckwheat. They tasted ok, but unfortunately my DD still could not tolerate them, sigh!

I know someone else that had trouble with baby rice but not with normal rice so definitely try making your own, use brown and organic if need be.
Instead of egg you can just use 1/4 cup of oil in all recipes, it works great I still do it now if I'm out of eggs and you can't tell the difference.
Maybe try millet as well, not really a snack but you could use it as brekkie or if you are baking inclined you might be able to make some sort of muesli type thing with it? (sorry I'm crap in the kitchen so I wouldn't have a clue but I'm sure some Nigella type could whip something up).
The dairy is a toughy, we used to substitute with ricemilk in baking and the only other milks I can think of would be oat which I think has gluten in it? and soy or goats or sheep which I wouldn't touch with a barge pole if you are having problems with dairy. Guess you could try the neocate in it? Not sure how that would taste cos that stuff taste foul.
Oh and if you ring 0800 NEOCATE they can send you a recipe book of things to make with neocate. I made a few of the meal ones just to get a bit more neocate in my boy but I didn't really do many of the others, it had a jelly to make which I always intended to do but never got around to

M the jelly is freaking aweful! I've never had success with any baking using neocate.
Interesting that the specialist said Kumera, potato is usually better tolerated.
Mum_me, that must be so frustrating. We've got a few staple foods but can't seem to progress beyond them.
I wish we had more snacks, and those that aren't rice. I'm going to try and experiment with millet & buckwheat so will let you know how I get on.

The plan is today to do my own rice and then see if its a rice thing in general or just the baby rice stuff. Certainly would make life easier!
Really feel for you guys with older children who can have so little. Thinking about food so much is tricky, esp when DS ate anything and everything that came near him lol. I might try and bake with neocate and see what happens lol. Make a teeny amount, and if the rest of us dont like it, well... maybe she will!

Kim, which baby rice did you try? Only Organic baby rice has the least amount of stuff in it. Only added B vits I think. If you have a grinder it's super easy to make your own baby rice. I think Cooper prefers that to bought baby rice anyway.
I would definitely look at sussing out rice first cause it's a really rare allergy/intolerance. Plus it opens up so much in the way of food if she can have it.
I was the same, as a baby Alia could eat pretty much everything.

that's the best! I was trying to google for this info but was having trouble finding it.
What's with the Olivani spread? I was looking for a spread yesterday but they all said, including Olivani, that they have Soy emulsifiers in them. How am I supposed to bake snax? and has anyone found a soy/dairy/egg free bread?

The chances are that he might be ok with soy emulsifiers, I'm not 100% but I think they don't have the same protein so therefore don't affect. I can't recall it all sorry, maybe try googling. Soy emulsifier & soy allergy

I need the dairy/soy/egg free bread as well, everything seems to be made with soy flour. Maybe baking your own is the best.
