My DS has reflux (we think, also has some other health issues which may be playing a part). He was just on half a capsule (5mg) a day which we gave before his bath with some pear. Now the gp has increased it to a whole capsule but didn't say whether to give it in one go or to split it and give half in the morning and half at night? Any ideas? I've read that ideally you should give it 30mins before a feed but as my boy is very very irritable, when he wakes he wants his bottle NOW so in the evenings I can manage as he has a bath before his bottle but in the morning he has his bottle straight away.

Our paed said it is up to us whether we want to give it once or twice a day.
Sounds like it would work for you to give it just once... maybe try it once a day and see how it goes?

Our GP just upped Liv's dose to the full capsule too and said to take half in the morning and half in the evening. We did just that and Liv slept through for the first time!
Also, in regard to timing, GP said it doesn't really make a difference and with babies you can't really do the whole 20min before feed thing, so I wouldn't worry about that.

We are on 10mg capsule twice daily, so yeah I do once in the morning once at night and I find it helps to have the two doses and if I miss one, I notice. You could give doing it twice a day a go. I do it straight before a feed, as like you he would scream if I didn't feed him.

LostAmber, I would have to disagree with your GP.
My first boy had terrible reflux and eating issues, and ended up being tube fed, so I ended up a bit of a reflux expert. Every paediatrician I saw (and it was many - more than 5!) always asked me if I was ensuring that the losec was given at least half an hour before hand.
I guess it depends on the severity of the reflux, but if you've got a bad one I would really encourage you to do what you had to do to make the half hour rule work.

^ ok, thanks. will give it a try and see if we get further improvement. what did you notice if you weren't able to get it in that 30min before?

My daughter has 3 10mg capsules a day. One in the morning and two at night. Shes 17 months old now and still needs it. I found the only way to get it into her when she was smaller was broken open and mixed with puree like your doing but given just before a bottle to help her swallow it down. These days we give it to her with water and at the same times everyday so its constantly in her system and doesnt wear off so it doesnt matter if its a half hour before or whenever. Hope this helps
