I am rather confused about all the options out there for preschoolers. I have a friend who had her son in creche and has just moved him to kindy now he is 3.
What is the difference? Should 3-4 years olds be in kindy? Is it better for them?

I wouldn't necessarily say kindy is better than daycare, it is just different. A kindy offers session of approx 3hrs, mornings and afternoons, and occasionally offers an all day session. Daycare offers whatever hours suit the family, generally all/most of the day.
That would be the main difference I would think

Kindy has all trained teachers but much higher ratios, I think our one is 11 to 1. It's not like daycare as in they aren't really there to care, as in feed/change etc. It's just a lot of playing and then some structured activities and once they are 4 then it becomes a bit more structured. It's more setting them up for school/giving them social skills than taking care of them whilst you work.

Ok probably explained that really badly so hopefully someone else does a better job of it.

it all depends on what you want it for. daycare generally is a whold day thing and they do what the name suggests - care for your kid instead of you.   a kindy traditionally was preparation for school but has been changing lately with more parents working. they are still however based on a free play curriculum and even though it can look like chaos there is learning going on through play. Kindy used to be sessional but i know that in Manurewa where i am now there are only 2 Kindys offering sessions now and the rest have gone to all day.
i dont really know anything about creche though but thought it was for much younger children.

Both my girls have gone to a creche and Sophie is still going. Our creche is a bit like playgroup but where you drop off rather than stay or a younger version of kindy. It is 4 1/2 hours two mornings a week, 16 children per session with 3 fully qualified teachers. Both Amy & Sophie love it.
Our kindy, where Amy is now, have moved from sessional to days, so 8.40 - 2.40 three days a week for the big kids and 8.30 - 12.40 twice a week for little kids. We have a huge waiting list and so Sophie will be lucky to start before she is 3y8m so thank goodness for creche!!

Pay no attention to the names of the places. Go and check them out and choose what one you prefer.

We chose daycare over kindy because the daycare is a much nicer place. The inside area is much newer, has more equipment, more indoor activities, loads more books and a wicked art area etc. The outdoors area was also better.

You will find most daycares have a preperation for school program so they don't miss out on anything by going to daycare rather than kindy.

Daycare is great cause you can choose hours and days that suit you. Also there is never any fundraising activities to do. You can still do it free beccause of the 20 free hours for 3+ . I also think its actually better prep wise than kindy cause we have chosen to do 3 days in daycare 9am - 3pm which is a typical school day. Rather than the kindy half days.

But really go check out all thats available. We loved daycare and didn't like the local kindy at all. But theres probably others who believe otherwise.

i agree with kebakat in that you should go by which you feel most comfortable in...

creche is where they are basically babysat(so a gym or somewhere like that)...

daycare and preschool are the same where the teachers are mostly trained and go by Te Whariki(curriculum) they are open long hours say 7am-6pm and depends which one you go to as to what they offer really.. the ratio is normally 1-8 ish for overs and 1-4 for unders...

kindy is not really that different.. except they expect parent help (well request it) you need to be part of the fundraising but often only like raffle tickets etc and the children are all the same age ...so at our one 3 in the afternoon and 4 in the morning...kindy is much much much cheaper:) but also a lot less hours(if sessional) ...the ratio is roughly 1-10/15... they also go by the curriculum..

it really does sometimes depend on the child..one of mine is in home care and the other was at pre school and now at kindy.

Thank you all,
That is very helpful. There is a daycare I like in the area so i think I will put my 3YO there though they charge a little more on top of the 20 free hours. I liked the atmosphere a lot. I am only going to put him in for a few mornings a week at this stage.

Anyway, thanks all.

Hi there,
Just found this forum, I'm having similar dilemmas about where to send my daughter (she is almost 3) as have no idea where is good and what would be best for her. Anyone know of the best kindy/preschools on the North Shore?
Thanks!

Well, my son is now going to '4kids and Whanau' daycare which is in Glenfield, James Street, and I love it and so does he.
where do you live? If you are in my area (glenfield) I can tell you a bit more about other places I have visited. 4Kids was my favourite and didn't have much of a waiting list and have 20 free hours and u can choose your sessions website is http://www.4kids.org.nz/site/Childcare_Centre.html

Good luck

I'm in Totara Vale so not too far away from Glenfield. I'll take a look at 4 Kids now, it looks quite good - I guess I just need to do a few visits and see which one 'gels' with us best. Thanks!!!
