The PHARMAC Board also applied reference pricing to the amino acid formula.
This means that the subsidy for the Neocate range will be reduced to the level
of the Elecare products. The supplier of Neocate has indicated that it intends to
reduce its pricing which would mean that Neocate would be fully subsidised for
those meeting the new criteria. In the case that the price is not reduced,
patients would have the option of receiving the fully subsidised Elecare product,
or continuing to pay a surcharge to receive Neocate.

Ok So I see it says the renewal will be every 6 months now not yearly. That sucks!

Unless anaphylactic to milk, will have to try the extensivly hydrolyzed formula first (which will cause issue for many kids still, pain and suffering every 6 months b4 the doc gives you a new subsidy number!) I can see where they are coming from, but with the time delays getting back to the doctor and hearing back from a busy peadatritian, it's so hard for those that aren't going to tolerate it.

I'm so sad we had to trial Soy formula before Neocate. MY DS ended up with a SOY allergy which he did not have before :( makes things a lot harder.

I just got my first lot of elecare yesterday and the pharmacy charged me $7.50 surcharge per tin. Does that mean that they can still charge me after the 1 april 2011 once elecare is fully funded?

Posted By: AandCsmum
Date Posted: 29 March 2011 at 9:30pm
I don't think so. I'm going to get some on friday & see. My pharmacy said that there wouldn't be a charge. Will be interesting to see if that follows through. I think the reason they are fully subsidising it is to cut out pharmacy's whacking an amount on it???

Thanks Kel

We pay $6.50 per can for both neocate and elecare. I just wish they would fund more flavours and products. There are so many more products (yoghurts/cereals, drink boxes etc) available overseas. It isn't fair for kids like our DD who is nearly 2 and can only have neocate/elecare. The only thing she has had to drink/eat for the last 6 months is elecare vanilla (and neocate via the NG tube)

Are you on the neocate yahoo group? I have suspended emails for the moment but when I was on there they were great for support.

I'm grateful my boy can eat a small amount of foods, even though it's frustrating, I can at least trial foods where as I guess you can't

Pity they don't bring that stuff in, I think at RPAH they were trialing a yogurt/custard?

My pharmacist thought that there would be no part charge from tomorrow. I hope so! That saving would really help out. He's going to put in our order tomorrow so we'll find out then.

We currently pay about $9 a tin. I don't mind too much as I realise how much the govt has to pay on our behalf, and it brings it down to the price of ordinary formula. However, if my daughter didn't have allergies she wouldn't be on any formula, she would be fully breastfed. And it is a medicinal product; if for example she wasn't on it and continued to have allergens in her diet no doubt we'd see problems further down the track which the health system would need to pay for.

Interesting to see how we all pay different things. I guess this is what pharmac are meaning by pharmacy's upping the charge.

Exactly Anna, my boy was b/f til 21 months when I had to give up, it was killing my body, I had hardly any foods to eat because of him, if he was a normal baby I could have eaten a normal diet & weaned him onto normal cows milk. I didn't mind pay the $ per tin as I would have been spending that on food/milk for him anyway.

I'm pleased it is now no charge, especially hearing how much less you guys pay!

Yes next month it should be free LittleN. That's why the pharmacist told me to put off ordering it until today

We pay about $3.50 a tin for Neocate in chch but I haven't got any in a while as DS decided to stop drinking it so now has no milk of any sort.

I personally like the idea of a 6 month check on all kids. If you have medical insurance then alot of your pead charge is covered anyway and I think its good to keep checking on kids. It is a prescribed "medication" so much like the pill people need to be checked to ensure its still needed and still ok for them.

I'm still unsure whether it will be free in Wellington. Went to pick it up this morning and the pharmacist gave it to me for free (for now) but he said it put him out of pocket - said Pharmac is funding it at the wholesale price, but he pays the distributer a different (higher) price. So either Pharmac will have to pay more, the wholesaler will have drop their price or I'll have to pay a part charge of about $30-40... while that's obviously much better than what I was paying it seems a little unfair that if you're elsewhere in NZ you don't pay.

Anyway, I agree that having a six-month limit is reasonable. Especially now it is 'free' (yet still costs the taxpayer a lot), so for some people it could be tempting to continue getting it unnecessarily. Though allergies tend to take a year or longer to grow out of. And we don't have health insurance so it will be an additional expense.

That distributor will surely be in the wrong & should be reported!

Hmm intersesting, the distributor here is now putting a $5 charge on each order, so am going to order my next script in one lump. Basically saying it's freight! Before they could obviously hide it in the cost of the formula now they can't.

Think I might ring around & find the cheapest way to get it.

I ordered 8 tins of neocate advance yesterday. The pharmacy only got 6 in and said that the supplier was out of stock. Does that sound right? or they just didn't want to give me 12 tins as maybe they pay for it upfront and get reimbursed? I had trouble with the GP (not usual one) giving me a script, he put a limited amount of tins on it, instead of repeats when you need it. My boy is going in to hospital then will need to recover, I don't want to be chasing tins of formula up! grrr
They aren't charging a freight fee but they are a large pharmacy and order meds twice a day I think, for multiple customers.

What a load of crock! They come in boxes of 4! Normal amount to order is a box, this usually lasts a week. I can't say I've read my script fully but I usually get 5 or so repeats? so 6 boxes in total??

If they are a large pharmacy then they'll have good cashflow & wouldnt' worry about paying for something up front.

Thank you so much for posting all this information. I was completely unaware of any of this. My little 8 month old has been on Neocate since 2 months (partially to start with and now fulltime).

We put a script in last week so I will be interested to see what happens.

Like I said - thank you. I would have had no idea what was going on and feel a bit more informed for when we have our next appointment with the Paed dietician.

I got my next lot of Neocate the other day, a months supply and it was free, pharmacist said it is now fully funded. So they definitely shouldn't be tacking on charges to it.

We are also being charged $5 per order as a freight charge. I'm not that keen on changing pharmacy, but will try to get a bigger script next time so that I only have to pay the charge once.

I was thinking of requesting 3 months worth - but that is 60 cans, so not sure if the GP will do it...

I just got 24 cans for the $5 so happy with that :)

Yeah the neocate is free but they put a delivery charge on it, it was probably built in before.
