Please share your IVF experience here.
If you are preparing for or have already gone through IVF please answer the following questions. Hopefully this way we can see some patterns of what has worked for others, new ideas/alternative therapies to try. This will also help us find a buddy who might be in a similar situation (MFI, low AMH, similar age, same stage in the protocol etc). Please add any other info you think might be useful even if it’s not covered by the questions asked here.

Thank you everyone in advance for taking time to reply. Baby dust to you all May you all get your much awaited and deserved BFP very very soon.

Age: 27
How long TTC: 8 months when found out have almost no chances of conceiving naturally
Diagnosis (fertility problem): All good on my side
Treatments you have had for the above:
Number or previous IVF/IUI cycles: Had one IVF in March 2011
Supplements taken while TTC: Fish Oil, Vit C. Have also been taking chinese herbs from my acupuncturist a few weeks prior to starting IVF
Special diet/nutrition: Trying to eat healthy, fish at least one a week, lots of nuts and seeds, LSA seeds on cereal every morning, minimal bread/sugars, brown rice etc.
Other treatments/ alternative therapies you have tried (fertility yoga, acupuncture, naturopath etc. How long, where, any other details that might be helpful): Have been going to Vitalis for acupuncture, did about 8 sessions before IVF and a session before and after ET. Have also started doing yoga during the IVF, helps me relax and calm down.
Fertility books, online resources etc you would recommend: CircleBloom.com, have been listening to their wonderful podcasts and reading the blog, have also purchased the IVF relaxation/visualisation audio. The Infertility Cure book by Randine Lewis is great if you are into traditional chinese medicine/acupuncture. Also listening to the podcasts by Sue Dumais, lots of wonderful support, infertility info, resources. And Sarah Holland's Fertility Mindset TV website is great!

PARTNER
Age: 25
Diagnosis (fertility problem): Not sure what the actual diagnosis is, will be asking the FS to tell us so that I can do further research online. Count is very low, way under 1mil, low motility and morphology too. They called in triple defect
Treatments he has had for the above: Doctors say there is no treatment and sent us straight to IVF + ICSI
Supplements taken while TTC: Menevit (3 months before starting IVF), Fish Oil, chinese herbs, Vit C.
Now has also started taking Multivit, CoQ10, Spirulina (+ other superfoods powder), and have just ordered L-Arginine and Carnitine to add to this!
Other treatments/ alternative therapies you have tried (fertility yoga, acupuncture, naturopath etc. How long, where, any other details that might be helpful): Has been going to acupuncture, about 9 session prior to EC.
Now starting acupuncture again before the next cycle.

IVF
Fertility Clinic: Repromed, Auckland
Consultant/FS: Guy Gudex
Feedback about the clinic and FS: Very happy with their service. Mostly deal with nurses though, would like a bit more feedback from the doctor and the embryologist following the EC and during the waiting days before the ET; nurses didn't really know much about the embryos.
Protocol you were on: Short protocol, went very quick. Puregon (150 ml) and Orgalutran (250 ml). Ovidrel for trigger injection.
How many eggs collected: 8
How many eggs fertilised: 7
DH's sample (fresh, frozen, TESA, PESA etc): fresh sample, but next time will probably try TESA though need to do a bit more research on this to understand what the difference is and whether it's worth it?
How many embryos transferred and on what day: 1 3-day 8 cell transferred. There were two more growing at this stage.
Any frosties left: None survived till day 5 so no frosties :(
Result: BFN. Have to do another cycle from the start. Currently thinking June/July but DH will do more SA tests before then to see if the supplements/acupuncture have made any difference.

bikershaz - we liked Paul so much after meeting him at F+ we used him as our obstetrician with our first baby (I was really upset that we wouldn't have him for this baby - I nearly considered commuting for OB appointments! ) and he was absolutely wonderful - love him to bits.

I am so, so sorry you lost your daughter

Wow Kazper, you had quite a journey, ah!? How did you cope with the BFN in the first round, and how long did you wait before doing another IVF cycle? Was your second cycle also a long one with the pill?

I am currently waiting for that 'feeling' or a sign that it's time to try another IVF cycle... but don't think mentally I'm ready yet, I simply can't visualise a BFP at the end of it....and to me that means a lot :-/

Gosh, am still marvelling at how lucky you were to finally turn that little frostie into a BFP and a healhty bub! That's the type of stories I was hoping to read :) gives me so much encouragement!

also, can I ask what test your DH did to find out it wasn't genetic? Are you talking about the Y chromosome micro deletion?

Thanks heaps! :)

Awwww sunshineWife I felt exactly the same hun. We waited 6 months to do the second round of ivf. I gained some weight during the first one because I got milk OHSS and the dr and DH suggested I take some time out and felt personally I wanted to get my health back on track again for the second one.

Actually the genetic part the dr just asked if any men in his family had issues with having children lol, but they all bread like rabbits, so they just assumed it wasn't genetic, but he had bloods for everything, even cholesterol etc (dr did health check) and it came back really good and because of history with no smoking and the fact he never drank they put it down to unexplained. They could have gone in to it further, but that would have been a lot of money and still wouldn't have gotten us our baby.

Yes both cycles were long courses. My dosages for drugs were changes second time round due to the mild OHSS from the first cycle.

Re coping, really hard. The dread of having one cycle over like that and only one left scared me a lot. Especially when the second one didn't work. I had heard that there is less chance with a frostie and our dr said he didn't think it would work and that we needed to look in to other options, but low in behold, miracles do happen

Reading this forum always makes me feel less alone in this struggle. So I figured it's time to stop lurking and share my story.

Age: 38
How long TTC: 3+ years
Diagnosis (fertility problem): Unexplained
Treatments you have had for the above: Laparoscopy, HSG
Number or previous IVF/IUI cycles: 3 IUIs, 1 cancelled IVF due to poor response
Supplements taken while TTC: Iodine, Folic acid, CoQ10, Elevit
Special diet/nutrition: Curbed my diet coke addiction and cut out alcohol
Other treatments/ alternative therapies you have tried: Acupuncture weekly, Yoga, Dietician
Fertility books, online resources etc you would recommend: Currently reading the Infertility Cure which is great and have downloaded a number onto my ipad through the Amazon Kindle E-Store. Will check at home tonight as there are a number of fab ones i don't think you can get in NZ.

PARTNER
Age: 40
Diagnosis (fertility problem): Slightly below average motility
Treatments he has had for the above: None
Supplements taken while TTC: Zita Wests pre-conception vitamins for men

IVF
Fertility Clinic: FAA
Consultant/FS: Mary Birdsall
Feedback about the clinic and FS: Really positive
Protocol you were on: IVF 1 (stopped before EC) Antagonist, IVF 2 (start FSH injections end of May) Microdose Flare with LH and then Colarado

Got pregnant naturally over the Christmas break (when the clinic was closed or ironically i would have been doing some sort of treatment cycle) but sadly this ended as a missed miscarriage. Desperately hoping i'll respond better to the change in protocol and that we'll all end up with our BFPs.

YOU
Age: 45 (now)
How long TTC: approx 7 years
Diagnosis (fertility problem): noting in particular - just getting old! (about 38 when we started, due to previous divorce, etc)
Treatments you have had for the above:
Number or previous IVF/IUI cycles: 3 plus one cancelled all with clomid, plus a few xtra clomid cycles, also acupuncture - all BFN
Supplements taken while TTC: folic acid, Red Seal women's multi, fish oil
Special diet/nutrition: Have a healthy diet anyway - no specific changes

Fertility books, online resources etc you would recommend: Oh Baby

PARTNER
Age: 50 (now)
Diagnosis (fertility problem): Husband's vasectomy: reversal semi-successful, low numbers
Supplements taken while TTC: blackmore's Men's multi, fish oil, thompson's anti-oxidant, L-Arginine, Co Q-10. SA has varied over the years, but the last one was just at the low end of the normal range.
Other treatments/ alternative therapies you have tried Tried a few acupuncture treatments, but didn't like it.
IVF
Fertility Clinic: Repromed Auckland for IVF - had IUI's with F+. both were lovely, but F+ staff seemed overworked and Repromed has better continuity of care, e.g. same FS throughout.
Consultant/FS: Karen Buckingham, and (usually) Renata (nurse)
Feedback about the clinic and FS: Lovely staff, always helpful and positive, but also honest. found one of the receptionists a bit snooty, but can cope with that!
Protocol you were on: Short (agonist)
How many eggs collected: 3, though one was small
How many eggs fertilised: 2
DH’s sample (fresh, frozen, TESA, PESA etc): fresh
How many embryos transferred and on what day: 2, on day 3.
Any frosties left: none
Result: a BFP!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck everyone :)

Had test on Friday. When I got the results they were inconclusive unfortunately so another test on Tuesday. I have had some symptoms. I had seriously considered going and buying a test kit but held off. From what I feel myself, the implant worked but then it hasn't progressed any, therefore the pregnancy hormone was detected in the blood test but not over 50 like it needs to be. Unfortunately I feel that Tuesday won't be any better news, and my husband and I will have to start IVF all over again. Those dreaded injections etc.

Had the test on Tuesday and the levels had gone right down to zero, so sadly have to start all over again.
Went back to FA in Hamilton today to see where to next. Got sent for tests to illuminate a few things as to why the miscarriages.
We'll have to start all over again with injections etc in a few months time.
So back to square one, and 'waiting' all over again.

Oh inwaiting, so sorry to hear that Hun :(
Come join us in the IVF chat thread, you'll find lots of support there from women who have been through similar situations, and are going through it now. What's your plan for the next few months? Have you considered acupuncture or seeing a naturopath or anything like that?
Hugs honey, look after yourself x

While some patients respond to acupuncture quickly, acupuncture certainly does not work overnight. But, I am still worried. What else besides the http://www.womenhealthzone.com/tests-and-treatments/alternative-complementary-medicine/is-acupuncture-ivf-effective/ - acupuncture IVF determines the effect of the treatment?

Update:

Last week Monday had a BT which wasn't great, but scan the next day showed a strong heartbeat - so exciting!! Both embies had implanted but one failed to develop past about 5 weeks; other one looked 'perfect'

BUT...

Bad news now. Although my HCG levels had improved this Monday, when I went for scan on Tues there was no heartbeat.

I'd thought everything was ok, so told DH not to bother as he had an important work thing, so was by myself. Another scan at the radiologists to confirm. Then D&C yesterday to 'complete the process'. I can't believe my one and only pregnancy is over! I guess I at least got a few precious weeks, and got to see a heartbeat, which DH missed as was in Aus. We are heartbroken.

Oh no Catie, I can't believe this I was only just thinking about you the other day, wondering when you'll pop back in to update us on how things are going. This is terrible news, I am so so sorry hun.

Your's seemed such a lucky and encouraging story, getting a BFP with only two embies and everything seemed to be going so well at the start... I really feel for you honey. I hope you and DH are looking after each other, this is such a difficult time.

Sending you a BIG squeezy

Hello Ladies. I've been snooping at your posts and thought it only right to share my story too. I wish I'd known about this years ago, but I was very "get on with it and act normal!" Loving the sharing and support you're giving each other and sending it right back at you all x

Me
Cycles: 2
Age: 1st cycle 30. 2nd cycle 31.
How long TTC: 3 and a half years.
Diagnosis: Previous to trying to conceive, suspected endo.
Treatments: Lap, but no sign as I'd healthied up!
Supplements: Elevit, Evening Primrose Oil.
Diet: Went wheat/dairy free for about 2 yrs to help with crippling periods.
Other treatments: Exercise! Lost about 20kg.

Partner
Age: 1st cycle 35. 2nd cycle 36.
Diagnosis: Sperm doesn't come out! Poor quality, very few.
Diet: He doesn't drink anyway but cut well back on caffeine.
Other treatments: He's super fit and healthy.

IVF
Clinic: Fert Ass, appointments Gis, Hastings, Wgtn.
Consultant: 1st cycle Stegman. 2nd cycle Hutton.
Feedback: Both Drs quirky, matter of fact, busy. Loved all nurses bar one awful newby. Especially appreciated embryologists time and communication when I asked "What would you do?" Communication and reasons why/not sometimes very slow and lacking detail. Often wondered if it would be the same were we paying privately.
Protocol: TESA, long cycle, ICSI, extra progesterone for the 2nd cycle.
Eggs collected: 1st cycle 13. 2nd cycle 11.
Fertilised: 1st cycle 6. 2nd cycle 5.
Transfered: 1st cycle 1 8cell on day 3. 2nd cycle 1 blasto on day 5.
Embryos: No frosties either cycle.
Result: 1st cycle fail. 2nd cycle positive.

Differences
Protocol: the same drugs throughout. Extra progesterone oral and pessary in 2nd cycle.
Emotional: Strangely, more stressed 2nd cycle.
Lifestyle: Lighter 1st cycle but just as fit 2nd.
Environmental: Winter 1st. Summer 2nd, I feel like it made a difference.
Medical: Had "old eggs" in 1st. Normal in 2nd. Weird. Reacted terribly to eggs-out 1st cycle, vomited, passed out, needed a drip, painkillers. The body just wasn't ready for/able to grow a baby after that. 2nd cycle, lessened the drugs, much stronger after.
Social: Only told/talked to people I knew I would be comfortable with knowing/commisserating with failure as well as success or giving space no questions asked.

After years of tears, we now know we will be a family. It has taken a long time to feel secure but we are so grateful for this pregnancy, 10 weeks til baby. Thanks for this forum, very cathartic to reflect and share. Lots of love to you all. Kia kaha x

Hi Winilla,

I'm at the same clinic as you are. Also on the waitinglist, so who knows we might be going through it at the same time! They told us the waitinglist was about a year, but now they say our intake will be next month, so 'only' ended up waiting for 7 months.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't really matter how your infertility is, if you qualify you go on the list and as far as i know the list is the same for everyone.

Would be cool if we could stay in contact maybe, since we're probably end up going for IVF at the same time! And we're about the same age too. I've just turned 30 a few months ago.

All the best for you anyway and hopefully your wait isn't too long either!

YOU
Age: 39 (now)
How long TTC: since 2006
Diagnosis (fertility problem): Recently diagnosed with implantation issues (have had 6 unsuccessful BFP's - one definite m/c at 10 weeks which showed up on our 12 week scan that we had no idea of being any issue, and the others were missed mc's before 6 weeks
Treatments you have had for the above: This time round (ET done last week) I had a pipelle biopsy last month - worse experience of my life!
Number or previous IVF/IUI cycles: Have had 3 natural conceptions and 3 IUI conceptions, did IVF Nov 2010 to ensure that we had no issues with egg vs sperm (and we don't). 1 IVF EC/ET last Nov, 2nd ET (frosty) last week.
Supplements taken while TTC: taken a whole heap of concoctions over the years - now simplified to folic acid, plant-based iron supplement
Special diet/nutrition: Had a body-cleanse since April 2011 of no gluten, no sugar, no dairy - recently reintroducing gluten and dairy and limiting sugar - staying very high in protein and low in carb though - natural foods, nothing processed. Have become a gym-junkie and am very fit and have lost quite a bit of weight.
Other treatments/ alternative therapies you have tried (fertility yoga, acupuncture, naturopath etc. How long, where, any other details that might be helpful): have tried acupuncture, naturopath, dietician, gospel healer, fertility books, oh baby forums, general google research esp on natural killer cells and MTHFR (which we haven't ruled out and have followed protocol for these up until this current ET, which is a no-drug zone), and I have a fantastic circle of amazingly supportive friends who are always there for me, come rain/hail/shine.

PARTNER
Age: 37(now)
Diagnosis (fertility problem): Nothing (if anything, he has a very high quality and high production of sperm)
Treatments he has had for the above: N/A
Supplements taken while TTC: Menevit
Other treatments/ alternative therapies you have tried (fertility yoga, acupuncture, naturopath etc. How long, where, any other details that might be helpful): N/A

IVF
Fertility Clinic: Repromed Christchurch
Consultant/FS: Greg Phillipson and Michelle Bailey
Feedback about the clinic and FS: Absolutely brilliant, open-minded, always trying to help and keep us updated at all times with new procedures
Protocol you were on: Long
How many eggs collected: 6
How many eggs fertilised: 3
DH’s sample (fresh, frozen, TESA, PESA etc): Fresh
How many embryos transferred and on what day: 1 fresh emby transferred Nov 2010 (I think) - BFN. Now have a frozen frostie on board, was meant to be 2 but one didn't survive, the one on board is 'perfect' and I think it's having a darn good go at survival from what I can feel/tell!
Any frosties left: None.
Result: To be advised. So far all the classic signs of morning sickness about a zillion times worse than I have experienced.

Hi winilla,

I haven't tried any drugs, because both my tubes are completely blocked and their is also a problem with my partner's sperm, so our only option is IVF/ICSI.
It was a huge surprise since my periods are super regular and my hormones are perfect, so didn't expect anything serious. We already knew my partner's sperm was low in motility and count, but we didn't really think I had a problem. But i do, so hey, new journey, new changes, new hopes after 3,5 years of trying!

Hopefully it will be earlier for you than March, fingers and toes crossed!

Congratulations JenR, that's fantastic news, sending you all the best possible circumstances for this wee one to grow big and strong!!

Hi Heather35, I also believe acupuncture helps. I started accupunture back in May on a weekly basis and continued on when my IVF treatment started in June. I also had it before and after the embryo transfer. We fell pregnant after our first cycle! I was aiming to continue up to 12 weeks, but I stoped at 9 weeks due to the expense and feeling too tired to go after work. I'm 12 weeks tomorrow! :) I wish you all the very best!
