Hi everyone am new on here.

After a very traumatic VB with D1 Doctors advised a planned c/sect would be the best plan for delivering baby no2.

It was the best birth by far and quickest recovery for me and less traumatic for D2 as well. Am now due with no3 and c/section again.

I've found many negative comments said to me about c/sections. And I just wanted to start a support thread for pro - c/section mums with tips and experiences.

I am sick of my mother in particular going on about how I should have a VBAC, why oh why would I do that when am still in pain 5years after my VB. C/section healed within a few months!

VB suits some, C/sect suits some

Anyone else out there Pro - C / Section??

I'm not sure that I'm pro c/s but its what works for me. My babies are brow presentation so don't come out the other way. I think its an individual thing for each woman depending on their circumstances. I know from me that my elective c/s recovery was waaaaaaaaaaaay better than the emergency c/s recovery I had first time round.

I had an elective c-section due to a breech birth with my DD and if I had chosen to have another child I was going to have another c-section. My elective was calm, peaceful, non-traumatic. My baby was also calm and non-stressed from the birth. I breastfed without any trouble. I healed quickly and was out of hospital on the morning of the third day, and driving by day 11. Be confident in your own ability to choose the best and safest birth for you and your baby and don't let negativity affect you.

I had a traumatic emergency CS for my DD. When we want another baby I'll definitely be looking into elective CS or VBAC - with drugs lol. But good on you for putting this up.

As fallen has said, it's each to their own. I think if someone hasn't had to go through a CS or a very traumatic birth, they can't understand why you would want an elective. Mine was a crash CS and would not want that again.
Just do what's right for you and your baby.

All the best :)

Hi! I had always wanted a 'natural birth' with number 1, but ended up having an emergency c. It took me over a year to get over it, mentally that is, because there was so much pressure to do it 'naturally' - and what is naturally anyway!
How dare people make you feel bad for what you had no choice over - or what you choose to do. We're expecting number 2 and looks like it will be another c section, its great to read some positive stuff - thanks and good luck!

I had a crash section after a 72 hour labour with my oldest, and have since gone on to have 2 electives, I 'enjoyed' my electives far more than the crash section. no panicking, no dramas, just go in, take our time get baby out, have cudels while being stitched, and up to recovery WITH baby (DS1 was rushed to NICU and I didnt see him til next day) and the recovery was much easier than with my first. Having not had a VB to compare them to, I would defintely take my electives over the crash anyday! No more for me tough, 3 c-sections entitled me to getting tubes tied at same time

Wow babykatnz, 72 hours?!?! I thought 41 was long! That must of been horrific!

I've heard how elective CS's are much more relaxed. You know exactly what to expect. I'm more on the side of an elective for next time. But won't decide till then.

My bub was delivered by c/s, technically emergency as she was breech and I was in labour, but non-urgent. It was a really great and easy birth experience, with a really good recovery. If I have another, I will definitely be considering another c/s.

Hi everyone

Just popped into to see how everyone is doing, I met with my MW today whom is a new MW too me as old MW now at the independant MW place. im not going there obvisoulsy after her collegue was so rude to me saying I dont have to have a c/section and I was like yes I do Im still in agony with a twisted pelvis, an out of alignment tailbone & aching episotemy scar from my so called natural VB 5 years ago!

New MW was very lovely and very supportive of c/section which is awesome as so is MY OB.

She did pop the question as to whom I would want in theatre if it does end up emergency again and they cant get hold of hubby.
Obviously cant have my mum as she wants me to have a VB
my sister lives 2 hours away.

whom did all you have in theatre as your support person?

I had an emergency but non urgent c section and are now consisdering what to do with this next one...and yip feeling the pressure to have a "natural" VB but are lending towards a elective c section. I recovered really quick and well from last cs and had no problems latching, bf or bonding with my baby infact I recovererd faster than some in my AN group that had so called natural births. So not all you hear is true about the recovery from cs and I think the negativity associated with CS does nothing but cause for added stress to some women, for some it just works better!

Afterall you don't get a medal for the experience of a natural birth the main thing is you get a healthy well baby it doesn't matter how they arrive!

Well done on being brave to post this thread I'm sure there are as many women in support than that aren't.

I think it's great to have this thread and good on you for starting it Girls Rock!

I had a crash c-section under a GA with DS and it wasn't the best experience, however it was necessary and I hate to think what would have happened if I didn't have it considering DS required resuscitation etc when he was born.

I decided to try for a VBAC this time for many reasons but I totally agree with lillibit in that so long as your baby arrives - it doesn't really matter how and there should be no pressure for anyone, from anyone to give birth one way or another.

If I do require another c-section under whatever circumstances (emergency or scheduled if I don't go into labour on my own as they won't induce me) then I know what to expect and after a quick recovery last time I am just grateful to even have a c-section as an option if the need arises.

All the very best for your pregnancy and birth!

Hi Girls rock,
I noticed on your post you said you had an out of alignment tail bone??

I've been having bad tail bone pain since my DD was born. Actually it started when I was heavily pregnant. But got worse since. She is nearly 5 months old. I just wondered how you came to find out that it was an alignment issue? I've got a referral to a physio. but that's a month away. And the doctor doesn't know what's wrong.

Hi Lillybetts just a heads up ACC dont cover Physio or Chiro or certified massage, accupuncture as birth is not an ACCIDENT, so be prepared for some big bills!

My pain didnt start till after I gave birth. I found out my pelvis was twisted when DD was 10months old from about the 7th Physio. I had xrays but only 2D and it wouldnt show unless I had 3D which we dont have at our hospital. Kept going back everyweek to the GP, had visits with the OB, Plunket nurse was good. I found the hospital physio dept not that great and went to a private Physio whom had a South African Physio whom had just moved here and had specialised in pre & post natel care & physio.

You can imagine by 10months of people telling me nothing was really wrong I started to think it was in my head, but after 15mins of her treatment I just couldnt believe the difference when I got up off the bed. I went onto have physio rite up till I was 7m with 2nd DD and then started again when she was about 3m and did pilates sessions every 2nd term this helped its still never got to 100% normal and now with pregnancy 3, Im trialling Chiropractor and she couldnt believe how bad out of allignment/twisted my pelvis is and tailbone far to the left aftr 5years! so she working on a few new tricks.

Mrs Emma, I didnt have my cs under GA so cant imagine what that would have been like. Cos I was in active labour they put in a spinal block which as far as I know works for a shorter time or is more easily controlled than an epidural.

Im sure if you end up with a cs under spinal or epidural it will be such a better experience for you than GA.

I found it very exciting to be so awake and not exhausted during my daughters c/s birth. They dropped the cloth and they lifted my head so I could see her coming out and crying and MW was quite involved and she was only at the peads table for a minute then came onto me for skin to skin while they stitched me up which was actually quicker than stitching up the episotemy. then she stayed on me for about 2-3 hrs in the nudy under a blanket sleepin away beautifully!

I didnt find the spinal made me drowsee at all, did anyone else?

I had a epidural with mine as already had requested it during the induced labour some time before. I found it a exciting experience to be awake and have a running commentary from my DH my son was brought to me straight away even though I couldn't hold him my DH held him so our cheeks were touching, first moments I'll never forget. The epi didn't make me drowsy at all in fact I was on a high for most of the week!
The more I think about it the more I'm leading towards a elective cs as well at least you know what you are pretty much in for - I've got some friends with some pretty bad stories of birth and the recovery aftermath.

Had an epi all 3 times, and pethidine in the PCP afterwards for #2 and 3 (had morphine first time around and hated it! I have only brief memories of my time in hospital immediately after delivery!) Pain was absolutely manageable after my electives, and I got to have skin-to-skin while being stitched up with #3, #2 was more of a cheek-to-cheek like lillibit (had lost a little too much blood and they were worried about what effect it would have on me).
I didnt get to see anything, but with #2 and 3 there was time to have camera ready, and get theatre staff to take lots of photos which I am SO grateful for!

forgot to say I had a good dose of morphine and didnt find any side affects from that. I didnt feel drowsy at all.

After my VB I couldn't walk properly or hold her after birth as felt I was just guna drop her or her slide of me onto the floor I was so weak from so much blood lost and exhaustation.

James - no my scar is near to invisible very long and curved like a smiley lol most people when I show them are very shocked how "good" and "un-noticeable" it is.

Ive found most c/sect mums not very kean on showing their scars. I have only seen one other and hers was straight across and only 8/10cm and very fine/un-noticeable as well.

Ditto on the scar here too, not raised at all, just a faint line barely noticeable and I didn't even bother with any "healing" lotions/potions.

Probably an obvious answer to this question...but do they recut your original scar open again second c/section? They would won't they? and how has it healed second time round - anyone that has had 2 or more?

What they do in most cases is they cut a new scar close to the old one, but they remove the old one so that you end up with just the one scar. They remove any scar tissue that they can do so safely. Very considerate of them huh!

My second c/s was a bit dramatic so I have a lovely neat line accompanied by a backwards Nike swoosh. It'll make the birds and bees talk MUCH easier in years to come - "here's where you came from, and here's where your brother came from!" heehee!!

Oh and on the birth support thingie - I had my husband and my independent midwife for #1. (That was on top of haivng the core (hospital) midwife that goes in as part of the theatre team.)

The plan for #2 was to have hubby and my friend who is a childbirth educator in theatre - she's helping me with my studies to teaching childbirth ed classes too - but it was all a bit dramatic and everyone yelled at each other and ran around like headless chooks and in the end not even my midwife was in theatre when they got him out.

after 2 sections I cant see my scar at all. Maybe it's the 'apron' ;) hehe. I do get bouts of thrush here and there, but other than that it's sweet as.

Excellent thread btw - i am so totally PRO c-section.
I just still love how when they went to take Lily out the doctor said 'Ooh thats a big baby.' hehe 9 and a half pounds later :P

I had my Mum and backup MW in for Thomas and my hubby and MW in for Lily.

Oh yea and they do cut around the same area for the 2nd+ sections and remove scar tissue. It makes the process a little longer, but you're honestly so occupied with everything else thats going on in the room :P

One thing I hope they do in the future is put out more education about c-sections. My AN classes were ALL natural birth with not even one little flyer about c-sections. Thank the gods for OB and all the wonderful ladies on here that gave me all the info I needed!

Well my Mum managed to slip into the conversation AGAIN yesterday that if she had been at my DD1 VB that i wouldnt of needed a C/s with DD2. OMG does she think she is an OB or a MW or something, she was just going on about how she would have known that DD1 was stuck and told me when to push etc LMFAO!

For the record had core midwife & back up MW and OB all in on the job for the last 4 hours of VB, if they all recomend a c/s for no2 then c/s it is and was and will be again! OB just said my internals of my pelvis and prominent tailbone wont get a baby over 6lb out without assistance. have had 6lb6oz & 6lb 11oz for the record

Mum is so anti - c/s she gets rite up me.everynow & then about it! She was in on my sisters very "text book" 3 x VB, no stitches home from hosp next day blah blah, mum of course thinks this is all cos she was her support person.

In someways I want her to come to theatre with me just to see how amazing a c/s is and someways I dont want her there just coz she is so anti.

Anyways in Timaru they only let 1 support person in so that will be DH and also hav my MW of course.

Sorry all about me today had to get it off my chest, but just wondered if anyone elses family are so negative to them about C/s birth.

Hey guys great thread. I had to have an acute c section (not emergency) with DD my Bp kept rising and she was breech so was admitted to hospital the night before my c section. Went really well as soon as I got feeling back in my legs I was up and showered, recovered so well was really happy with it. Now I am pregnant with baby 2 and am really feeling the pressure of having to have a VBAC, I dont really have an excuse not to vbac since I never went into labour with DD so there was never an issue as to whether baby got stuck or if my pelvis was the right size. There is prob a good chance I would be fine but is just hard to think about having to go through what would be a first labour for me when I have known the easy, less painful way IYKWIM

who's putting the pressure on you to VBAC? I think if you want to c/s birth then tell the OB/MW straight up. Ignore any friends/familys comments its YOUR BODY and YOUR BABY! and we are in the 21st century!

In my first scan (this 3rd preg), OB asked any do you have any questions. Can I have another c/s? Yes of course its best for you, is the answer I got. yes Ive had problems but I know others that havent that like you have preferred to c.s birth and thats what they did.

Posted By: salz
Date Posted: 23 May 2011 at 7:55pm
I suppose its a generalised pressure and its assumed I would want to vbac. My MW said the day I got home from the hospital "not to worry that I will be able to have a VBAC next time" she just assumed that's what I want. The thing is I dont have an excuse to not VBAC Im just a whimp. So I suppose Im putting pressure on myself too.

salz plenty of women opt for another c/s, it's an option every woman whose had a c/s is given. There are risks to trying for a VBAC which is why we are given that option. You don't need an excuse as you already have a valid reason!
I think for a VBAC to be successful you need to be in the right head space for it, going into it feeling pressured or worried in my opinion would not lead to a good experience.

On your painfree way though, I've done it both ways, my first was an elective c/s as he was breach, second was a VBAC. Now I never laboured with my first, so second was the same as a first labour, 14 hours all up. Yes it was painful during those 14 hours, but on the whole taking recovery into account the VBAC was less painful than the c/s. I'm going for VB again this time, but if it ends in c/s I won't be devasted, in fact I would like to get my tubes tied if it does happen, figure they may as well do that whilst they are in there

-------------

Posted By: MissAngel
Date Posted: 25 May 2011 at 6:31am
I thought that too with the tubes tieing, but they wouldnt do it because the tubes are inflamed and all moved around and sometimes the little clips and slip off apparently! silly OB. I think it just depends on the person themselves thats doing it.

I had that people pressure us, seems very old school still doesnt it.

Here's a random question. For all those mummies who have had an elective CS - Did you get a wax down there before hand??

I got shaved for my emergency and my scar itched so bad for weeks afterwards while the hair grew back. I'm contemplating getting waxed the next time I get pregnant just so I can avoid the annoying itching haha!

Thats the thing with my c-section it went so well I was in very little pain at all so recovery was great. Was inspired by one of the other girls VBAC story in the vbac roll call thread though. If I want to try VBAC I have to get myself mentally prepared I have always been nervous about labour have no idea why.
Lillybetts - thats a good point prob pay to do regular waxing several months before hand cause I think when I wax for the first time I still get itchy and blotchy.

Lillybetts I got regular waxes though both of my last two pregnancies. In fact the morning of my last c/s I got the area around my scar waxed so I didn't have to be shaved. I usually stop waxing at around 34-35 weeks as I get too swollen and veiny down there.

And another random question (sorry I have a million of these running around in my head);

Even if you were to loose a ton of weight, is it true you always have the tummy fat because of the CS?

And is it true that you aren't likely to bleed out if it's an elective? I lost a lot of blood with my emergency and it had a big effect on me. Does anyone know why you actually bleed out?

You dont get all your pubes off for a c-section. Just the top part. I didnt wax, I just let them shave it. TBH, you'll be all numb around the area for a loooooong time. I didnt feel anything!

You can work on getting rid of the c-section 'apron'. I'm a fatty anyway so it doesnt bother me.

I bled terribly with the elective and didnt with the emergency. I was out of recovery an hour after the emergency but was there for 3 hours for the elective. Luck (or un-luck) of the draw I guess. Its all up to your own body at the time.

By about 6 months post DDs c section I didnt havnt a fat tummy any more, it was back to its flat self.. It hink its harder to tone your tummy since your muscles have been cut up, so they have to heal and regain their strength before they become effective again...

Because I dont wax or shave often on the odd occassion I do it flares up but prob cause I dont wax regularly.

Quick question for thos who are further along or been pregnant after their first being a c section. Does your c-section scar start to hurt again as you get bigger with the next pregnancy. A lady in my other forum says she has ongoing burning pain on her scar but she is carrying excess fluid.

My lower belly tends to ache when I'm pregnant (had c-sect x5), bit like af cramps. I'm a regular shaver (i.e every shower) down there & keep it all off, nurse commented it made it easier to do catheter, which is a bonus when you have an OB like mine who likes everything done before the spinal goes in . I've found the scar still itches like crazy around that 8-10day mark though, not from the shaving, just the healing.

i dont have an apron over c/s scar. it was nice and flat until recently! am now 20weeks!
I did take longer to loose weight, but put this more down to 2nd pregnancy and worring about exercise ripping my insides.
OB told me they dont cut your muscles but maybe diff OB do it differently?

I have waxed bikini line for years n years, more recently getting brazilians or near brazzys lately as its more sensitive. I plan to wax up reguarly before due date as like they said dont need itchy hairs in your scar
it is only the top bit so if you a first time . newbie waxer I would just get the edges/top done from now till birth. most beauticians have seen 1000 c.s scars so they will be up to the knowledge on what area to wax up for you.

ignore what MW said about not to worry you can try for vbac next time. I just had a MW who works on the maternity ward, speak to me at the school gate yesterday and we were talking and she said so you be having another c/s? YUP its just different days different thoughts, that mw has had a emergency c/s then a vbac to.

like someone said its your body and you are the one that needs to get your head around what way you want to birth your baby, its your choice, dont let the pressures of a vbac get to you.

Im so over all the "OH SIGH" you have to have another C/s from every one especially a friend who had a vbac. I just like to say that electives are births too!

Totally agree. When I've talked about possibly having an elective next time, I get some odd looks or funny comments.

Wow tictacjunkie, 5 CS's? I want a CS for my next baby (not pregnant and wont be trying for a while.), but am worried that with every baby the scar gets more and more painful. Have you found that? And does it make it harder to recover each CS? We want at least 3 kids.

Have had 3 babies, 3 c-sections and now that its all fully healed I had a gander in the mirror (as you do ) and theres still only 2 lines, my guess is they remove some of the old scarring so you dont get multiple scar tissue buildup.

Oh and apart from being a tad itchy along the more recent one (21 months between the younger 2) while pregnant, I didnt find that it hurt at all. Then again, I'd just had lap surgery to remove gall bladder 2.5 months before getting preg, and was more worried about the belly button scar hehe

Hi ladies. I have a few more weeks until I have to decide whether I want a natural birth or CS. Reading these stories has helped a lot as I'm leaning towards a CS.
I was induced with DD due to high BP, contractions were very intense, had epidural, I developed a racing heartbeat and fever. DD got stuck, so it was an episiotomy and 3rd degree tear with forceps delivery.
Recovery from tear took months and even now BD'ing is very uncomfortable.

Am feeling the pressure to have a VB, but I've heard so many positive stories around elective CS's (mostly from those who have had them). All those who haven't had one are generally pressuring for a VB.

If I knew the VB would go well I would chose that in a heartbeat, however I don't know what my BP will do this time round and I certainly don't want to be induced again.

So I have a decision to make very soon. This will be my last baby. Everyone says your second is so much easier and quicker, but there is that risk of tearing worse.

If I chose a CS I intend to just tell very close family, as I can't stand the comments you get from people too.

hehe, who cares what everyone else thinks! the main thing is that you've grown a baby for 9 months and are now choosing to bring the little bugger into the world safely! I got flack for my elective, I shant say what they got told when some of the comments were rude, but I certainly gave them a mouthful!
Good luck with your choice Jax - just remember that it doesnt matter which way you choose, you're making the RIGHT decision!

my gp/mw/ob all were recommending the c/s right from 1st positive preg test with my 2nd. They all said it would be my best outcome, in this way i feel lucky as I felt 3 medical professionals were helping me choose.

It was also my thoughts too. like you I was worried how is this GIANT episiotomy cut ever guna stretch/rip/scar again for another vb, am I guna be worse off in the va ja ja / bottom region after another vb,

I c/s you get over in a matter of weeks not years like an episiotomy.

Think about the baby too, my dh didnt ever want to see another baby of ours dragged into this world by ventouse & forceps, it was horrendous to experience that. only those that have do.

even those in my close family were negative about it especially my mother (whom wanted to come to DD1 VB but I didnt want her there) she thought just cos she wasnt at DD1 Vb thats why I had such a difficult time. WHATEVER!! I had 2 midwifes and a OB with me during my labour what would my mother know whom gave birth in 5mins a hundred years ago. She still goes on about it now and I still "rub it in her face" im guna c/s AGAIN OHHHHH!!!! YEAH!!!!

I loved that I had an emergency c/s - right from admission for my induction (16days overdue!)that morning I was asking the OB to take me to theatre!! He made me go through 17 hours of labor which my wee girl had still not engaged by the end of - then ended up having a c/s which I wanted that morning anyway!

So next time I will be heading straight for the elective. Maybe I just got lucky and everything went well, but I am so greatful for the amazing job the surgeons etc did.. I was driving (short distances in an automatic) after 2 weeks and discharged myself from hospital after one night.. It doesnt necessarily have to be as bad as some people say!

I was also a bit annoyed at the parenting centre classes we had which seemed very anti- c/s.. When they did the exercise of 'what is your ideal birth' and 'what is your worst fear' - I put ideal = surgical (c/s) and worst fear - not making it to hospital in time and having her at home!! Gosh did I get shot some nasty looks! Each to their own.. I just love the controlled environment of a surgical theatre - everyone knows what they are doing, there are loads of people looking after mum and bubs, it takes under an hour, you can tell people you will have your baby at 10.30am on tuesday the ***

Hehe - yep I am proud of my c/s scar!!

Lillybetts, yep 5 c-sects, I've just got the one scar & I haven't found it more painful each time, have found it depends on baby's position though. I've found the recovery far quicker with my electives than the emergencies, this time round I felt "normal" a lot sooner than the others.

pleased to hear you BLOW away all the myths about limit of 3 c/s!!

Isabella
pleased to hear like me you BLOW away all the myths about not driving for 6 weeks, I was also driving at 2weeks

Actually I wasnt comfortable to drive until 3weeks after my VB and really wasnt comfortable driving until 10months after VB so a few weeks post c.s was quick!

Love this thread! my mind was totally made up with this PG that I would have a CS, after my 100% positive experience with my first emergency CS, but I did come up against a lot of questioning from friends and aquaintances about why, and why not go for a homebirth (big around here), but I found as long as I sounded happy and firm about my decision there was no real pressure from anyone

Jaxnz1, my 1st experience was very similar to yours right up to the part where DD got stuck, then the OB gave us time to make a decision bout what we wanted to do and we went for a CS, best decision ever! Good luck with your decision

its just how trendz change I guess aye. 10-20 years ago if you had a c/s you properly were looked at strange if you have a vbac, now you are looked at strange if you are happy / had a great experience and want another c/s or c/s after traumatic vb.

Thank you for putting this up!! I'm so sick of people judging me because I am going down the elective road when it comes to having #2. I went into labour a few hours before I was due to be induced (14 days over) and contractions were painful and close together right from the get go. After 16hrs I was still only at 4cm so got my waters ruptured and decided on an epidural cause I was so knackered and in a lot of pain. Still, nothing was happening so got the drip put in (syntosinon or however it's spelt lol) and that did nothing either. Epi wore off in the middle of the night, but no one around to top it up for me. So was right back into painful contractions, but only at 6cm by this stage. Kept getting put off and put off by anaesthatist cause he was too busy so I just lay there in agony, waiting waiting waiting. Then finally, 18hrs after I had my waters broken, they decided 'sh*t, better get this baby out' and was rushed into theatre. I was absolutely terrified as I'd never had surgery before, let alone even been in hospital so I had no idea what to expect. Antenatal classes made C/Sec sounds so negative and terrifying. I was shaking like a mad thing and crying my heart out cause it wasn't the birth I had wanted (planned a drug free water birth) but when I heard Isla cry for the first time after only being in theatre all of 5mins I was like 'oh, is that it?!' and I was happy as anything and completely forgot what was going on around me.
I absolutely hated my labour experience, it was hideous and no way do I want to go through that again. So I'm definitely putting my hand up for an elective next time round.
My recovery was a piece of p*ss to be honest. People I know who have had VB's complained about being in pain more than I did after having my stomach cut open! I was going for walks and doing everything as normal straight out of hospital (other than the things you aren't meant to do ie vacuuming/driving) but other than that I was my normal self! I personally couldn't drive until the full 6wks as DD was 11lb 8oz and I'm only small so my ab muscles actually tore apart.
16 months on and my scar is barely visible. C/Sec all the way!!!!! lol

wow nzlisajo 11lb 8 is a good size bubba, both my girls were 6pounders and were 10lb by 10weeks, with having the elective the 2nd time around too I got the lightest capsule I could find (under 2kg) and snap & go wheels. had the big pram with basinette set up at home for walks around to dd1 kindy so no heavy lifting for me.

great to hear another postive c/s experience from you! thanks for sharing your story.

heard another great story this morning. She had 2 girls VB then just had c/s last week as bub was presenting bottom first breech and said it was fantastic, liked it far better than her vb. now I dont know the story of her vb but hey good to hear another postive experience all the same as like you said nzliszjo so many anti-natel classes and books and people outlay such a negative approach/or little information on c/s birth.

I agree about the antinatal classes, not so much negative as no info at all, and even though I did huge research before birth, didn't really read up hugely on CS, so only info I remember reading was that feeding was difficult the normal way and had to be attempted in a football hold! Well funny, but I never had an issue with feeding at all in the std way.

I never had an issue with feeding the normal way either. Infact, the midwives at the hospital never even suggested the football hold.
I was really naive and just convinced myself that I would give birth 'normally' and wouldn't need a c-sec so I had no idea what to expect. Was just terrified cause of how antenatal tutor explained it.

Yeah, its wrong how one person can put their negative issues onto something. My antenatal class was all pro BF which is all good if you are able, but I know of many women who just weren't able to for a variety of reasons, all relevant. And the pressure that was put on them was totally unreasonable.

Actually I'm all for BF and amazingly am still going!! but still I was aware that it may not have happened for me and resented the pressure and the lack of education for alternatives, exactly the same as CS.

feel so at home with this thread thanks girls rock. Just had my OB appointment I have 8 weeks to decide what I want re VBAC or elective c section.
Am hating having to make the decision! I really dont know what I want. C section is all I know and it went so well so of course would favour that. VBAC is more fear of the unknown but on the other hand I could be fine. The OB said I could pull the plug and go for c section at any time during my labour but I think with having that option in the back of your mind it would hinder me mentally for handling the labour as as soon as the pain gets intense I would pull the plug where as if it was never an option I would have no choice but to get through it and probably would.
Arrg am really hating having to make this decision hoping baby will make its mind up for me lol. HAve midwife appointment with her next Tuesday so will talk to her about it although hope she wont be too pro VBAC and understand where I am coming from.

I still have some fears with having another CS as an elective is still a little bit of an unknown compared to an emergency. Not wanting a VBAC but still wondering how different this situation will be, no waters breaking, no labouring, which is really the babies way of telling me they are ready, not the other way round.

Being very aware and awake this time round, was knackered but happy first time round and fell asleep on table, lol, so don't know how I will feel re operation, bit iffy with the whole poking round the stomach, will I feel it?

And then the BF after, will it be as easy this time since the body hasn't laboured and gotton the milk flow going.

I don't think we are happy ladies until we have gone thru all scenarios in our heads, usually at 3 in the morning, and worried about each one.

Oh well, thank goodness we are lucky in this country to have options!

millemama - Im happy to go thru with you my experience since mine was a booked c section so I never had one twinge of labour or cramp or anything. Baby had to come out at 37 weeks cause she was breech and my Bp kept rising despite medication. My milk came in on day 3 which I think is the norm. It might help to start expressing a few days before your ceaser check with your midwife. Anyway it was a really good experience it was a bit surreal. I had no pain you do feel abit of pushing pulling as they get baby out but I think it helps if you chat to someone that has done it before and can talk you thru what happens and what to expect.

I've got heaps of fabulous photos from my c section and some rather gruesome ones of DD on her way out of my belly. Our anesthitist took our camera and went crazy with it, super glad he did as I was so drugged and exhausted from a mammoth labour that I really didn't know what was happening!

Thanks Salz thats really helpful, I read somewhere else about expressing just b4, sounds like a good idea. I think if I get it set in my head the schedule and the little things that will happen, then I'm ok, don't like being surprised, and DH & I won't put up with bullies, (been there and done that!) But without my own MW there or a doctor I have bonded with its just that little bit harder. All good tho

Great photos ladies, yes lisajo that is one huge bub! lol. I'm like you, very average photos of me, great shots of my double chin tho!!!. This one is ok but they never told me how sexy the men get to look in their scrubs. Whilst DH was hold DD I was fast asleep! lol

just starting...

and with DS and DH

When it comes to number two I will let bubs decide whether we go VBAC or elective. With DS being 10lb 9oz, posterior and bow presentation we didn't have much choice! With a smaller bub or just a well positioned one I might trial labour 2nd time round but will go C-section if we find ourselves in the the same situation as with DS.

Oh and I was driving at 3 weeks, could have done so sooner I think. Definitely not the horrendous recovery we were warned about in antenatal class

great pics ladies.

I only got 2 pics, the other one you can see the OB surgeons hands & stitching way more blood etc, Anethitis (sp) took the camera. Hoping to get lots more "detailed" pics this time.

nzlisajo your screen looks massive very high.

they took my screen down when they pulled her out then lifted it again to do my stitches, I had my hands right on her bum under my rib cage and felt her getting taken out it was such a good feeling, I said to them Yah I can breat, my lungs arnt squashed yah there is our baby! I just felt so wonderful, so different to the traumatic VB.

milliemama great pic of skin to skin, I didnt get any pics of that but still remember it was lovely had her on my chest for 3hours after the birth and she peed on me lol

The anaesthetist's technician was the one taking the piccies for us. We got quite a few. And some good ones too! She took heaps of the cutting of the cord etc (as DF's hands were busy doing the cutting!)
I have a pic of when they are just pulling DD out. She looks like a toddler lol. The surgeons words were actually 'holy sh*t she's huge! Wasn't expecting that!' made everyone laugh. I can put it up here if you ladies wanna see it..... she's all gooey and slimey tho so thought I'd check first lol
My screen was quite high Girls Rock.... altho I didn't think that at the time... but compared to the screens you ladies have it looks REALLY high! But I was more than happy for it to block out everything! I just wanted to (try and) ignore the fact that someone had their hands in my stomach! DF probably would have fainted if he'd seen any of it TBH.

Girls rock - no, wasn't in agony at all! Had no I was going to have such a HUGE baby lol. I was still running the day before I went into labour (up and down stairs no less) and I wasn't uncomfortable at all!
A customer came into work today with her 1wk old bub. He was 6lb5oz at birth and omg he looked soooooo tiny! I get so clucky seeing teeny babies cause I kinda skipped that stage! lol. DD was out of her basinet after 3wks cause she was too big (she was actually too big from day 1 but I was in denial) and was out of her capsule at 10wks (but was a real tight squish from about 6wks lol).
I have to mention tho - said customer had a C-sec and LOVED it! This is her second and last child. Had a VB first time round and was raving about how much better she feels this time round after having an emergency c-sec due to fluctuating blood pressure. She even drove to our work to show bubs off! Only one week after! She looked great

glad to hear of another fantastic c/sec story from your customer!

wow running, good on you. my friend is a runner and was doing some marathon thing and her OB come running up beside her (she was 7months) and said I think this will be your last run madam. she went straight home to buy a treadmill to run in her garage,so she couldnt get told off again. lol.

my basinette is 90cm long by 45cm wide so bit bigger than the new ones are about 76cm long by 36cm wide or something like that, both mine were in it till they were 8-9months.

be interesting to see if this one will be a 6pounder being a boy and if he will put on the beef quicker and be out earlish. we just cant fit a cot in our room, so want to keep bubs in our room so girls can have there own room for as long as possible. I am 26weeks scan says im due 23 oct, but I reckon I will go between 5-9 October, according to my dates and other pregnancy lenths both being 9months minus 1 week. hoping to start labour naturally again but whip straight up to hosp for the quick unpick stitch option. and wouldnt 09-10-11 be a cool birthday.....time will tell

Did anyone else find this? I'd said to them that I didnt want to have skin to skin straight away as I dont like weight being put on my chest while i'm laying down.

Its funny you mention that, I saw my MW today and she said they like to do that. I'm guessing I would like that but can see your point and maybe I wouldn't so will definitely be mentioning in my birthplan. I found the birthplan worked really well for me, it was flexible and not really finished as I didn't want to set myself up for disapointment if things didn't go the way I planned, so it was written for me and then I made sure DH knew what was in it and what I did and didn't want, that way he was prepared when I made a request and knew what I was on about.

Sooooo... long story short will keep that in mind and let DH know that if it's not what I want he can take action for me.

I only had skin to skin in recovery as I wasn't fully awake until then due to long labouring.

millemama do you know if you had a spinal block or an epidural, cos if you have an elective you are more likely to have a spinal block and most woman say they find they are much more with it and recover better than from epidural. I had a spinal block for my planned but emergency c/.s as was 4cm and 12min apart and didnt feel drowsy one bit, I felt at ease holding her but then she was also 6lb whether that makes a difference?

I had skin to skin whilst they stitched me up. didnt find it aweful at all, found it aweful having skin to skin whilst they stitched up my womanly bits after the episiotemy and labour 1st time round thou. I didnt feel stong enough to hold her, worried I would drop her and just feel so worried for her and sorry for myself getting my netheregions peaced back to gether

I had an epi last time but found it to be great, fast acting and had really quick recovery, had CS at 8.30pm and was up and hobbling round next day, but I had been given the epi several hrs b4 the CS and didn't need a top up, was fairly mobile above the tummy too, arms were working fine and even legs had some movement in them, but I was seriously tired after a couple of sleepless nights with contractions then labouring for 7hrs with syntocinen (sp?) which made contractions quite full on with no let up, but no bubz either, lol. So fell asleep on the op table and missed the show, much to everyones amazement, and hubbys horror (he thought something was wrong poor thing). Woke up very briefly when they put DD on me but was too out of it, so hubby had first real cuddles until I was more awake 15mins later in recovery. Nobody suggested that it could have been the epi, but who knows, never realised it could do that.

Anyway MW yesterday said that a spinal is the way to go this time so happy with that. I read your post in other thread GR, its sounds so traumatic, this is the exact reason I am happy to go for another CS. I hope time has healed.

I am hoping that no one will respond in a negative way to this but I want an elective C/S for my first birth. No complications, no medical reason, I just feel that this is the right decision for me. Anyway, I have gone through the public system so far with a hospital MW and am now at 28 weeks. My decision at this point is either to continue with the public system and fight my way to an elective c/s (not even sure if that is possible) or to go private and pay $4300. In an ideal world I would like to stick with the public system and just pay for my elective surgry (which I have been told is around $1800). Has anyone done this or do you have to go private for a completely elective (no medical reason) c/s? Thanks

No judgements here, you have come to the right forum. If you are feeling overwhelmed, scared, traumatised by the thought of VB then you should explain this to MW, doctor etc. These are circumstances that are cause for an elective CS through the public health system, but of course they will try to talk you out of this, just be firm of your reasoning. Otherwise not sure of the private vs public, hope this info has helped. GL

I think discuss it with your hospital MW but you might want to set up a meeting privately. To be honest though even the private OBs are not big on electives for no medical reason. About the cost, we had a private OB (and ended up with an elective C) and I plan on going back to him if we have a second pregnancy - worth every cent in my opinion!

L113, can you do a bit of both? Like meet with whoever it is who will do it privately- as they will be able to let you know whether you can still use a MW but just use the OB for the surgery.

I thought I heard here in chch they can do electives at chch womens (the public hospital) but I heard that a wee while ago so could be wring

also, keep talking to your MW. what is she like, on the scale of natural birth things? eg quite balanced or a bit of a hippie (not that theres anything wrong with that, just that what works for some doesn't work for others )

I have a friend who knew straight away she wanted a C/S- did end up with one but only after a failed induction and some damage to the baby from all the stress of it. I think what she taught me was that sometimes mums just 'know' what they need, even if there is no reason on paper for why they need a c/s...if that makes sense!

all the best, would be keen to hear how you get on

Thanks for the comments. I haven't discussed this with my MW yet so I will bring it up next week and see how it goes. As for going to a private clinic just for the birth, I asked one in Mount Eden about that and they said no, they have such a high number of patients that they can't just take on surgeries. I'll let you guys know how I get on!

Just been reading all the posts, this is a great thread!!

I had to have an emergency c/s at 36wks, with my firs,DS, after being in labour for a few hrs then he went into distress.
With my second,DD, I was trying and hoping to go natural but thought bubs would decide and turned out she wasn't in correct position so we did a c/s which was a lot less stressfull then the first and the recovery was pretty quick .
I was concerned with having a c/s second time round but purely as I wud have a 9mth at home to look after and carry around and the whole not driving thing. But it was all fine and I could carry DS no problems!

I am just pregnant with no 3 and obviuosly will go for c/s but so far just taking it one day at a time
Trying to get thru this dreaded early preg stage. Can't wait until I know all is safe and baby is sticking

I had to have an elective due to DS being breech. I was mega scared! even cried walking into theater hahahaha
out of 8 of us at antenatal class 4 got c-sects! one was he second child (her DH first), one was after a long labor and 2 of us had breech babies. The other who had a breech her MW was quite upset she had chosen a c sect... and afterwards even asked her if she thought she made the right decision... eek..
will probably have a c sect for the second. we have a breech thing in the family haha!
anyone have one end of their scar play up alot? its red and a lil sore every now and again. i think if it still plays up monday i should get it checked.
