Hope its not to late to start my winter vege garden ....bit of a newbie here and needing some ideas, so what have you planted in your garden?
We dont eat cabbage or cauliflower but I have recently got some chooks so dont mind planting for them too
Is it too late to sew seeds? bearing in mind Im in CHCH and we are due for some frosts (I can cover then over night tho) or is it best to buy some seedlings?
TIA

I havent done anything this year as have been to slack, however i would plant seedlings and make sure they get covered if its going to frost until they are well settled. You can plant broad beans from seed, silverbeet- chooks love this, brocolli, beans. cant think of anything else!

Thanks Aethalia, Yes Brocolli is a must, we eat heaps of it! and silverbeet for the chooks - Im sure they will love it.
Beans...what about carrots?
I have leeks in already which were given to me that are doing OK but I dont eat them either, Im sure the neighbours will tho
Anything else which will survive the frosts?

According to the gardening mag they said you should start in January with seedlings for winter already (growing from seed) and then every week or so from there to continue to sow. I started late and trust me I should have started a lot sooner.
But I think it is best to get some seedlings from the shops perhaps. (just my opinion).
We have carrots, onion, spring onion then garlic (that needs to go in soon so if you love garlic) then spinach, silverbeet. We have broadbeans, broccoli, broccoflower, broccolini, cauliflower, leeks and celery, lettuc and beetroot in.
I use the gardenate website and it tells you what and when to plant things, when to start seeds and when to plant out etc and what to get ready for the next month. I love that website and so far it is working really nicely for us.
Hope you come right. (and strawberries will start hitting the market now to get ready for spring)

Hey LB, we have cabbages, cauliflower (although not sure how that is going to go with all the rain we've had here!), brocolli, spinach, carrots, leeks and broadbeans. I just planted my broadbeans as seedlings but I think in CHCH they are best to be in by Anzac Day (or so my dad says, he lives in CHCH). I'm in Tauranga so our climate is a bit warmer and we aren't as affected by heavy frosts. Good luck, I'm a newbie too and learning loads!!!
