Help preggy ladies! My SIL is coming over for xmas and will be five months pregnant. She's sent me a "request list" for xmas dinner, most of it being food that she can't eat while pregnant (any one know about creamed paua?). so...I remember when i was pregnant and getting annoyed cause everyone could have yummy stuff and I couldn't, any suggestions for yummy xmas food that is safe for the preggos?

check out the food safety website they will let you know if she can eat the yummy stuff. I'm still eating ham this year.

paua??? not too safe I imagine...
Hangi food - well most of the problems with that have to do with the preparation...if not clean etc then there may be probs for her...
What about turkey - like those rolled turkeys you buy instead of ham? Or a well cooked chicken ??? I am asking for the turkey roll this year...no ham for me - first bubs I too am playing it safe...
Desserts - well most of them should be fine...but maybe not a rich soaked trifle (alcohol) etc...
Make sure you have some grape juice or something else non alcoholic for her - or ask her to bring some with her?
I knwo how she feels and will be interesting reminding Dhs family of this - they do a breakfast and i am NOT getting half way across akld for that this year!!! am waiting to see what they will do instead...

Is it just me, or does it not make sense that she's sent you a request list of foods she can't (in theory) eat... ?!?

she had done a pregnancy test and found out she was pregnant, she hadn't been to the doctor/midwife yet. I think she may have been by now, but I told her that she might want to check, but that the majority of food she couldn't eat. she didn't know about the listeria risk and such.

I was pregnant over last christmas, 5mths

I ate, trifle i had made myself that day, without the alcohol (they added their own), we had a bbq, and i just made sure that the meat i ate was well cooked, although i am guilty of eating med rare meat during my pregnancy as i craved it that way.

i prepared a green salad and had that with some boiled potatoes, and i ate lots of icecream....lol

I dont think paua is good.

trifle etc (cream custard is fine if made that day and kept in t he fridge at the right temp,

Kazzle Ice Cream is fine (if its in a tub)... Cream freeze (like from mcdonalds) isnt,

I also thought red meat was fine its just white meat that you need to make sure is well cooked

Nibbly foods - yummy crostini with avacado and tomato, hummus, etc
Dessert - fresh strawberries and something yummy and chocolate-y, gourmet ice cream.
Main - veges or freshly made salads with well cooked chicken. Nice selection of fresh breads.

You can still have Xmas ham as long as you eat it piping hot too. So either straight from the oven off the bone or you could grill/bbq some thick slices with pineapple
I can't wait for thick slices of Xmas ham with coleslaw and I won't have to eat it hot by Xmas day! Mmmmmm.

I would think most food is okay for her to eat, it would only be like shellfish. If you have Ham I presume you would of prepared it yourself along with Chickhen etc... so would be fine. I have Gestational diabetes so there is alot I can not eat. My friends son is turning 3 and she is asking me what I can eat etc... so she has special request for me - I said I will be okay and not to make a fuss - just like your siL shoudl do. Its not like we can't eat most things when we are pregnant just have to make sure it is cooked and stored right and she can help with that side of it.

I am the food nazi, and I ate xmas ham I just nuked it till it pretty much exploded (OK so then it didn't taste that great...)

I also ate hangi, I just stayed away from the chicken 'just in case' and stuck to the pork and veges.
