Can someone please explain to me how a skin prick test is meant to determine the body's ability to digest certain foods? Forgive me, but I'm struggling to see how a reaction on the surface of the skin is meant to indicate the abilities of the digestive system... Clearly I'm not doctor here

It's got nothing to do with digestion of food. People who are allergic to certain foods can be kissed on the cheek & have a reaction either small or big.
"In the evaluation of IgE-mediated (true) food allergy, the skin prick test identifies specific IgE antibodies to the suspected food."
so it's testing if you antibodies in your blood/skin to the allergens

Well that is interesting. Thanks :) I was talking to the doc about testing DD for dairy intolerance and he wants to do a skin prick test, but I couldn't work out how testing her skin would work. Guess I was right.

If your DD has a dairy intolerance it won't show up. It doesn't hurt them & it would rule out the true allergy, which then puts you in to the food challenge arena.
