My little girl just turned 3 and I've took her to a creche once a week for the first time 4 weeks ago. I'm a SAHM and was always there for her, so she is quite attached to me. The first time at creche went ok. The teachers said there were a few tears but but when I picked her up she was quite happy and wanted to go back there. Second time was ok, third time (last week) wasn't so good - it was really hard to leave, she was very clingy and today when I asked her if she wanted to go to playgroup, she said: No, I don't like it there. I tried to find out why but she just won't tell. I'm not sure, how to handle this, I don't want to force her, but I'd like her to get used to being away from me for a while and socialize with other kids. im not sure i can help my DD started kindy in term 3 of this year and had never been to daycare so had never been with anyone but me really, however she settled in well and at almost the end of her second term still have never had any tears. What i think helped was that for a couple of terms before she began i went with her once a fortnight or once a week for a couple of hours for her to play and get used to the place and the teachers with me there. most kids go through a "honeymoon" period when starting at any form of creche or daycare, they love it at first, but then reality sets in and they have a few rough weeks while they settle, the teachers should explain this to you, also only going one day a week could take her a really long time to settle, a lot of centres wont actually enrol children for one day, as the gap between visits is so long, all the centres i have worked at dont do single days..if it is important to you that she spends time with other children, and away from you i would just persevere, she will settle, the only other thing to think about is the christmas break, does the creche close down? if they do and she will be having a break over the summer, it may pay to just stop for the year, and start back next year nice and fresh, and when you can settle into a creche routine that will last longer than a few weeks.. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

I would also suggest going for at least 2 times a week. At one stage Ella went from going to daycare 2 days a week down to 1 days and it was so discruptive to her (and she used to love going). In the end I had to increase her hours and she was fine again. ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |
