Hi
I'm just wondering if there is anyone that has had a laporascopy and paid for it themselves. I am currently on the public waiting list (6 months) to have a Lap done but I don't know if I can wait that long and would be keen to investige the option of having it done privately. We are currently under Fertility Associates and apparently they don't do the proceedure privately so it would mean finding another specialist. I am 36yrs old and have been TTC #1 for 2yrs so I feel like I am rapidly running out of time and the thought of waiting another 6 months before treatment is hard to handle. Thanks |

I waited about 3 months on the public list in CHCH for my LAP (the wait said 6 months too) I called and asked to go on the cancellation list and kept ringing and bugging them to see where I was on the list LOL before I knew it a letter was in the mail saying my op is about 2 weeks away!! ------------- TTC for 4 1/2 years IVF #1 - April 2012 short BFP, no frosties IVF #2 - August 2012, BFP!! 3 frosties! http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

Where are you Mellowpuff? I had a Lap and dye for endometriosis and to check for any blockages etc, through a specalist at Boulcott Clinic in Lower Hutt and it was paid for by health insurance so got to go private and super quick.
Had a cervical dilation through FA which was private as well and covered by my insurance, and again the only wait was for timing in my cycle. I'm surprised they don't do private Lap's. Hi Mellowpuff - agree with LadyBee, ring and ask to go on the cancellation/short notice list, I did this and had mine done within 2 months of seeing the specialist for the scoring so was only on the list for like a month (this was in Dunedin). They gave me a weeks notice of the surgery. If you do go private it is pricey, I think I remember other people saying $10,000 plus. Sorry I can;t help more with the private paying info.

Thanks for all of your replies. I live in Hamilton so will be going through the Waikato Hospital. I'm not sure if there is more waiting time up here than down south but you have certainly given me hope. I will make sure that I get on the cancellation list asap - do I phone the hospital or the FA clinic that I am going through? Thanks for your comments Buttonz but unfortunately we do not have insurance so we would be paying for it out of our own pocket. We do have a bit of savings but if we have to end up going with IVF, I think it's probably better to keep it aside for that, as we have been told the waiting list for IVF could be 18 months or more. It is just such a waiting game which I don't handle very well - I like things done now!!! To top it all off AF arrived this morning so my spirits are pretty low at the moment. Thanks again |

Oh - who's your Dr at FA? I was with Lakshmi Ravikanti and although you're right, FA doesn't do lap ops, she just referred me to herself, she also works at Angelsea Women's. She saw me one week, and the literally did the lap op the next (it was all a bit of a rush getting the insurance OKed in time, it was that fast).
Mine cost about $11,000, but was covered by my health insurance. A bit pricy if you have to pay yourself, but if you were keen it could be worth it. I took a few days to recover. I was surprised, I have been used to being told 'you'll need x amount of time off work' and in reality needing much less... but I had the op on Wednesday from memory, and wasn't up for work Thur or Fri. I did go in on Saturday, but in reality didn't feel that great, we were just really busy (I have a desk job too). -------------

I was a little bit tender after the op and had some endo removed at the same time, but only had a couple of days off work. The thing that got me the most is the sore shoulder - it's from the gas they use to expand your everything, and for some reason it comes out your shoulder, so just something to be aware of.
I think I spent 3 days on the couch watching DVDs then went back to work (desk job as well), and had no issues. I can relate to wanting everything now, this is a very frustrating process for impatient people like us, but hang in there, I'm sure it will all be worth it, and definitely agree the savings are better kept for IVF if needed, especially to help with the waiting game. I ended up staying the night at the hospital due to my BP being very low, pain wise I was ok just uncomfortable. When I got home I was quite swollen and was hard to walk around but not sore. I was sleepy for the first two days then got better and better. One week was too long so I would say take 3 - 4 days off and see how you feel. Office work would be fine to do but I did find it hard to concentrate during that week.

Hi Mellowpuff, I had my lap done in Tauranga hospital and waited maybe 3-4 weeks on the public system. I had my op done on the Thursday and went back to work on the Tuesday after. I could've gone back on the Monday, but still felt a little tender, so took it off as well. I also had the shoulder pain, blimen sore, my wheat bag was awesome! I found the first couple of days afterwards I still felt pretty out of it, so plan to spend time on the couch with mindless TV or DVD's and it's nice to have someone to look after you! Good luck

Hiya, I had mine privately through insurance and the invoice that I sent on to them was for $13k. As the others have said the wait isn't always as long as you think on the public waiting list.
I stayed in overnight and had around 5 days off work from memory. I was in major abdominal pain for about 2 days and also had the shoulder pain. There's no way I could have gone back earlier and I also have an office job. Everyone is different though and it also all depends on how much endo/adhesions they remove. Good luck! |

Out of curiosity who is your health care provider? I am currently doing the rounds with mine regarding getting this done - they seem to be convinced its associated with ov cysts (which according to my GP and Gyn its not)...

I'm through Southern Cross - I have hospital and specialist care. It was for endo rather than fertility as this was after 6 months of trying and painful periods. Insurance didn't know about the dye part. We're with sovereign - as I understand it, they treat endo as a medical condition (as they'd operate for someone not trying to get pregnant, so can't really discriminate just because you happen to also be trying). Although I'm sure my specialists letter did help, it was very well-written. She did even mention that we were trying to have a baby, but that was because she said it was important that they understood that other methods of contorlling endo, like the pill, weren't an option for us. -------------

Apparently period pain (I have complained about it before i got my insurance) is a pre-existing condition !?!
Has anyone else been through this? I am in pieces about what to do

My doc is Helen Wemyss too - she is really lovely and knowledgable. For my lap & dye she referred me to Lakshmi at Anglesea Womens, and I got it covered by insurance with Southern Cross, but I made sure I didn't say anything to them about trying - it depends who you get in the call centre, but if you don't mention trying then they won't quiz you as much, as fertility issues are not covered.
Mine was about $8,000, I didn't need to stay overnight but I was quite sore so took 5 days off work (no shoulder pain but TMI quite a bit of swelling down there). I have a desk job too, and the thing I found hardest was sitting upright all day - I can't lean against the back of my chair at work and my abs and lower back were really sore by the end of the day

That doesn't seem very fair! I had period pain when I was young and the pill masked it so I could function. Southern Cross didn't say anything about pre-existing. Hey Mellowpuff, I just had a lap, HSG, hysteroscopy, cyst removed and endo removed with Lakshmi from FA at Angelsea. My bill (which my insurance is paying) was around $12k. That included staying in for one night too. Before we talked about insurance, I was told the wait for public in Waikato was around 6 months. Good luck
