So I had a low lying placenta with my first pregnancy, so this time I had to get scaned again at 32 weeks to check. Placenta all good, but they found another problem: on the 'customised' growth chart, baby is considered small (5th percentile on personalised chart). Went for two more scans, and baby has slightly decreased on the chart, so growth is slowing. Am now 39 weeks and have an appointment with the maternity team in greenlane on thurs to discuss what to do.

To be honest I haven't really taken it overly seriously as they last measured baby at 2.9kg +/- 400gm which seesm perfectly normal to be (my first son was 3.384kg at birth). But now they are talking induction on or around due date and I don't want that :-( However I don't want any intervention unless absolutely necessary. I don't want to risk anything with baby (apparently still birth more of a risk) but also don't want intervention only to find out everything is fine.

Anyone else had experience with this? What happened to you?

Are you really tall???

I'm 1.73cm & I had this issue & my baby was on the 5th, when she was born, yes she's short but was the fattest of all my babies. My babies have got shorter the more I have lol and the introduction of the customised growth charts now is what make them "freak"

The risk of a SGA baby is that if you are going to have a prolonged labour they sometimes don't have the strength to last a prolonged labour & they could loose too much weight in labour.

My first was 2.9 kg, 2nd 3.05 and 3rd was 3.3kg, so when I got the estimated weights I was like this is already bigger than my other babies.

The risk is if your baby isn't growing the required amount between scans, but again they're subjective to who's taking the scan I was ok cause I was getting 2 weeks std growth between the scans.

OH & the thing I found funny as soon as they're out they're no longer SGA if they're a normal size

They can't make you do anything but can only advise you on what to do. Do you have a midwife or under hospital care? My midwife really went into bat for me & when I got over the hospital invention at about exactly where you are now she stood by my decision. It was the only firm decision I made in my pregnancy but I was backed by a good scan which was still tracking on the 5th. I got so over the hospital I ended up going for a homebirth!!

We also blew off an appointment cause I expected to have her at 39 weeks but instead she hung around til 40.2w.

Was your previous baby overdue?

Hi Scardey Cat,

I have had 2 growth restricted babies. The reason they get concerned is because if the baby is falling on the chart then it is a sign they are not getting what they need from the placenta and there is a possibility it is not functioning correctly.

If it were me I would go with the plan of induction, there is a greater chance of things going wrong if left. Also there is a greater risk of the baby not tolerating labour very well due to lack of energy and small size.

Just on the induction note I have to say both of my experiences with being induced were excellent. My fuirst baby I was induced at 34 weeks and my labour was 2 hrs from start to finish and with second baby induced at 38 weeks and took 1 hr. Both babies were born very healthy, but with my first the placenta was really tiny and already breaking down.

Take Care, Im sure everything will go fine and at the end of it all when you have your little one you wont care how he/she got here.

I know that my sister (who is also very tall incidentally) was being very closely monitored towards the end of her 2nd pregnancy because they were worried about slowing growth & undersize.

And then her daughter was born 3 days after due date perfectly normal.

So while I'd not just say 'ignore it' I would always take something like this as advice, not instruction. consider all the info you have (is baby still moving well? are you well? any family history etc?) and make an informed choice YOURSELF in discussion with your LMC and partner/husband.

But also try not to be scared of inductions... if it does have to happen being informed about it, and not too stressed if you can manage it, can only help.

Yes good point on family history as well which they don't take into consideration. All my family have had little long bubbies, so maybe yours is the same?

Just wanted to add, I didn't have a growth restriction with #1 but I did get induced. Its not as scary as you can read in some places! As far as I was concerned I had a straight forward natural birth, normal labour (12 hours). I got 2 lots of the gel they give you and that was it. Maybe induction won't be so bad, esp if they are concerned about something.
