Just wondering how long it took your child when they first started school to get over the tiredness at the end of the day?

DD started just before the school holidays and is so tired in the late afternoon/evening. She is in bed by 6.30 every evening (would be earlier but wants to have a little chat with DH when he comes home) and waking around 7 in the morning so a good 12+ hrs at night. She is a busy little thing and her teacher says she is also watching/taking everything on board, so no wonder her mind is going into overload.

I expected this tiredness, so not too worried...just curious as to how long it took other children to get used to it?

Yep thats really normal. Isla did get better, but Thurs is always the worst night of the week when shes really really tired,...we often skip homework that night, and bath before dinner.
She started school at the beginning of term 4 last year,...she gets reallt tired again when she first starts back after each lot of holidays, and today she just went back to school after having all of last week and mon, tues off for a tummy bug, and tonight she was crying over something silly at like 4pm, and alseep by 6.30pm. She usually sleeps 7pm- 6.15/6.30am which is the longest shes ever slept in her life,..shes never been a 12 hr sleeper!

Jake started this term (b'day in the last week of last term) so hes in week 6 I think .... he was really tired week 2 and 3 but has come right since then. I've heard some kids hit the wall around week 6, but he seems to have come right. I've also heard of lots that are tired by the end of the week for quite a while. Jake is in bed between 7-7.30 and up around 6.30. He napped til he turned 4 so I expected it to be worse! There's no way he could do after school care yet, but had a play date last week and was fine (a bit grumpy that night tho).

His teacher lets them have a little lie down on the couch if they're tired, and apparently he is asking to lie down less now! lol

Daniel is the same age and started last term. He's buggered by the end of the week but I insist that when he comes home from school unless hes bursting with energy he has to have quiet time on the couch watching a dvd for a while. Means he can wind down and be fine to eat dinner and have a proper bath etc.

thanks for the replies. Now that we are into week 6, its starting to get a bit better- not so many meltdowns in the afternoon. She still needs to go to bed early (but I have no problems with that) and I have even been able to switch her swimming to after schools on Mon and she was able to handle that.

Nikki- E's class has some big cushions that I think some of the kids occassionaly have a quick nap in during reading time. They have just had swimming every day for 2 staight weeks (plus walking to and from the pool) so I think in the afternoon there were a few of them having a lie down on the cushions.
