Hi ladies :)
Very keen to meet other mums-to-be. I moved to Palmy end of 2010 and friends already have older children and have established "groups" etc. Always good to meet new people!
Found out the other day that I'm pregnant and due April 9th! My husband and I got married last November and this will be our first baby - so excited!
I wanted to wait til 12 weeks to spill the beans to anyone but I've been so excited I ended up telling my 2 best mates and my husband told his family. Hope it all works out ok, I'm scared something might go wrong!
I've not been very productive at work or with study this week, I keep finding myself reading stuff on here and looking at baby things online..started looking at midwifes but they all almost seem to be taken already! Not sure how you go about picking one, do you interview them or just call them up and see if you like them?
So far I've been lucky with symptoms, I have sore boobs and need to pee a lot, and keep getting hungry about every 2 hours (!) but it could definitely be worse!
Look forward to getting to know you all and sharing this journey!

I just popped over to this section of the forums to ask if anyone in Palmy wanted to start a coffee group as my "due in December" forum don't appear to live here, and found you beat me to it!

I'm totally keen, even if the group ends up being people from all different stages of pregnancy/child-raising :-)

I'm due to have my first baby on December the 2nd.

Re midwives I just called up Midwifery Care as everyone I asked kept recommending a particular midwife there, including my GP - I happened to like the first one I went to meet and stuck with her. So far, good decision. We'll see how I feel about it on D-day :-)

On that list I highly recommend Anna K, she went in to bat for me really well when we were up against the hospital system.

What times suit people, I've got a pretty set schedule as I have a care child for 2 weeks out of every month but I could do a tuesday morning on a week that he's not here.

Once I finish my thesis in the next 4 weeks, I can do any time, any day really.

In the meantime if you made a time that suited people I'd try to make it, just couldn't guarantee it.

I would love that but there is no way I'm venturing in there with 3 kids. The oldest one would be great but the younger two not so much!

Hi everyone

Things seem to have come to a grinding halt here so thought maybe I'd try and jumpstart the coffee group idea again.

Some of you who mentioned being maybe able to make Tuesday or Wednesday mornings - if you're all still keen - how would this coming Tuesday morning work (the 16th) for any of you?

We're not doing antenatal classes, and I'll be a stay-at-home Mum for a while, so I'm pretty keen to meet as many pregnant people or people with young children as I can so I can get out a bit after the baby's born!

Yep, that'd be me with the huge bump!!

Although some days it doesn't seem so huge. I can't decide. Some days I think for 7 1/2 months it really could be bigger, other days I feel like a whale.

I was told by someone at work the other day that I resemble a rocking overladen barge...someone's just lucky I have a sense of humour :-) I was feeling huge that day too!

Hi all! I would be keen to join the coffee group a little later on as I'm still working full time, but in the mean time would love to still keep in touch as I'm pretty clueless about becoming a first time mum!
I'm due April 8, so just starting to think about what we need etc and reality is starting to kick in that I don't really know what I'm doing!
Did most of you on here attend antenatal classes? If so, where did you go and would you recommend them?

Posted By: AandCsmum
Date Posted: 28 October 2012 at 9:19pm
I did with #1 & the classes through parent centre were really good. There is also the place in westside on the square that does them as well????

Heytez, dont buy summer clothing for bubs...it's cold in April, I stupidly bought summer stuff for this bub which was never used.

I haven't done antenatal classes but I've heard good stuff from lots of people about the Parent's Centre classes (they cost a bit but I've heard bad stuff about the free hospital ones so might well be worth it).

The Westside place is Community Birth Services and it looks like they do free classes - haven't heard anything about those ones at all. www.communitybirthservices.org.nz

I'll let you know in a couple of months how the first time Mum without antenatal classes thing goes LOL

Yea we signed up at the community birth classes, but only went to half. Found them a bit useless- went over things we knew- our midwife is great and I had read and researched a lot. We are coping very well with only.2 hours of 'classes'. Depending on how you feel, how much you know, and energy levels, I wouldn't bother!

Hey all. Id be keen to meet up on the 8th also. Would be nice to meet more people in Palmy.
To answer age of babies - Elise is almost 3months old :)
Antenatal classes - I did mine through Mamaternity. Was awesome, helped the teacher was excellent, her name was Natasha Apperley. The classes were held at the Plunket centre on Albert street. We actually enjoyed going to it suprisingly. ( I was expecting the worst!)

Hi everyone

I haven't been getting notification emails for some reason and way away last week so totally missed this - but ended up spending the morning in the blasted hospital anyway!

Now have pre-eclampsia - not impressed - at least almost 37 wks now so could be worse and growth scan shows baby is bang on average in all dimensions so that's positive. Back in for more tests tomorrow - so I'm thinking I may not make the next meet up until I've actually HAD this baby as they're making noises about induction :-((((

Please cross your fingers that either I go into labour before things get worse, or that the induction works if it comes to that!!!

Well HE at least seems totally happy so far (and definitely a HE! still don't have a name or even a short list yet - eeek) - it's just me that's the problem so can't complain too much really...we'll see how today's tests go...I've been so expecting to get pre-eclampsia thanks to my family history so I'm quite delighted to only be 3 days off term and only just starting to get borderline results now, nearly 10 weeks after my mother's pre-e was so bad I was born. Hopefully that's a positive sign that if it comes to induction we'll both tolerate it fairly well...shall keep you posted...

Cute photo :-) sorry I missed you guys!!

I'm keen if I can make it...no guarantees though.

I've had borderline and up and down results all week - they still can't seem to make up their mind if I actually HAVE pre-eclampsia yet but it does look that way. Yesterday they added in "your amniotic fluid's a bit high, maybe we should do the polycose test again in case you're developing diabetes" - fluid levels are only borderline too high via one method and only in the high end of normal via the AFI and polycose was totally normal at 28 weeks so I think they're freaking me out about nothing but I get the better safe than sorry thing. Know someone who lost their baby after birth because of gestational diabetes (not sure what happened exactly other than the baby's blood glucose got way too low) so OK with double-checking. It's just all very bizarre as low fluid levels seem to be WAY more of a issue, especially with pre-eclampsia.

So I don't know at this point what the heck is going on, just hoping I go into labour before the next ADU visit sends them flying towards "let's induce NOW!". If pre-eclampsia doesn't make me sick, all the suspense of tests every 2nd day might LOL

Anyway if not up at the ADU or delivery suite (:-P) I will see you Thursday if something's organised :-)

So yep, I had a baby!!!! Our baby boy (no name yet) was born Thursday the 22nd. I guess I was in serious contraction pain while you guys were coffeeing! :-)

I had all the intervention I was hoping to avoid, including induction, then winding up with an emergency caesarean not long after starting syntocin because the baby got distressed.

In the end, my symptoms never got very bad at all, I was only mildly affected, but the placenta was looking a bit dodge apparently and the baby is actually a little underweight compared to his expected weight based on my growth scan and customised growth chart (below the 10th percentile or something). He is completely healthy though, 2670 grams, breathed/cried straight away, awesome apgars, feeding brilliantly straight away, doing absolutely awesome.

So yeah, that's me...not the birth I wanted for either of us but the end result is all good and the obstetrician sounded very positive about me being able to have a decent trial of labour next time so long as the pre-eclampsia doesn't strike again or something else goes wrong. I made him promise to stitch me up good and leave all the important bits in during surgery - they either think I'm nuts or they're used to hearing weird stuff from women in labour! I was a bit out of it on gas, days of sleep deprivation and contraction pain at the time!

I did get one part of my birth plan - delayed cord clamping! Not for long, I'm not even sure how long, but they did wait for a bit after both Brent and our midwife asked if they could do that. It does seem to be becoming more accepted now. I don't know if it would have made much difference, but a caesar baby who's been in distress can't help but benefit a little from the extra oxygen, haemoglobin and volume to send to his lungs and help clear lung fluid. He's feeding brilliantly too so hopefully he'll make up for his lack of growth pretty quick!

Poor wee man did everything right, presented beautifully, had some nice normal head moulding even...just didn't handle contractions well. To be fair, I never want syntocin again without an epidural so not surprised he had some issues!!! I had started having my own pre-labour type contractions on Monday and on top of those, prostin pains from the gel on Wednesday, trying to manage contractions with activity and staying upright while not knocking the bloody cables and CTG things and standing on the fetal scalp monitor cable and the sleep deprivation the syntocin just about killed me (or at least it felt like it). Continuous monitoring stinks, but I guess I'll never know whether or not the baby would have made it through labour without it to alert us to a problem, and given the placenta wasn't in a good state, who knows if he would have made it until I had him in a spontaneous labour.

Cross fingers next pregnancy is uncomplicated and I can have a decent shot at a VBAC. In the meantime...when I can actually DRIVE again I look forward to the next coffee date!!

Hi Anna- congrats on your baby boy

I agree re syntocinon- it's a crazy thing! I went from 3cm to 10cm dilated in 2 hours on that stuff with no pain relief- no what you mean about the nearly killed you!

I am glad that you got the delayed cord clamping. I know what it's like when nothing goes 'to plan'- my one redeeming feature was the no pain relief, so I feel as though I got my one thing too.

How are you feeling now? Has the baby got a name now? (even though you wrote your post only 18 hours ago!)

I'm feeling pretty OK now - had a bit of a meltdown on the second night once the spinal wore off and the emotional stuff from the preceding fortnight and the labour/birth caught up with me, and the first night home was a bit of a challenge. I'm healing pretty well it seems, feeding is going awesome, tummy has gone down heaps which makes me feel better. Feeling so good I have to keep remembering I have incisions through multiple parts of me and shouldn't be lifting stuff or straining my abs too much! On the bright side, I've been waited on by hospital staff and hubby over the last week like never before!

Thanks! I think when hubby goes back to work the hardest thing is going to be being stuck at home unable to drive anywhere!
He can do all the housework stuff that I can't do in the evenings, but I'm already getting a bit sick of these four walls. I have various people wanting to come visit next week though so that should help stop me going too crazy, hopefully!

I'm really liking this parenting thing so far, but am looking forward to when he's a little more interactive. I might feel slightly less like a dairy cow/nappy changing robot LOL Looking forward to when he starts smiling!

He seems to be a pretty chilled out baby, not that I have anything to compare to, but he does seem to (mostly) have a bit of a regular sleep/feed/poop routine and doesn't cry much. So far so good....oh, and he's really cute...in my mind anyway! He farts a lot but doesn't burp or spit up much (yet). He already looks like a combination of his Dad and I which I find quite weird - I guess I'll get used to that!

Would love to but have a morning tea at our work playgroup plus a little 3 month old to look after as well.

I can do the 27th if anyone is around? If it's fine Bethanys is great cause then the bigger kids can run around outside!

Hi lovely ladies!

I am 27 (on Friday!) and i have 2 daughters. Aria is 2 1/2 and Claire is 1 on Thursday. I was hoping i could join you ladies for a coffee group when you next have one! I already have a few mummy friends that i found when i moved here but 2 are moving back to their original cities and the other is always away lol.
So if someone could flick me an email (connie.maria.french@hotmail.com) and let me know that would be great!

Thanks!

Oh wow this might really be getting off the ground!! What's the best day of the week for everyone? I'm pretty flexible at the moment - shall I start off the suggestions by suggesting 10:30 am at McCafe Rangitikei St this Thursday or Friday?

Next time! We'll let you choose the location :-) How about in a couple of weeks?

My friend and I once boycotted this particular McCafe for a few years (until they changed owners) so I totally understand (maybe not for the same reasons, maybe not as serious, but we were furious about something that happened at the time). Turns out we can be stubborn :-)

This seemed to die over the holiday period, I guess we were all crazy busy!! (I was just sleep-deprived with a newborn LOL)
