So we are giving IUI a go but been told IVF will be more of a sure thing given we have had a baby before, have no known issues (unexplained infertility) etc.

I have a few questions
- I believe the wait list is 1 year plus for funded (Akl based), can we join the list but do privately funded in the meantime? Or will that bump us off the list?

- If you go privately do you still have to meet the BMI criteria as you would if it were publicly funded (yes i have a few extra kgs i would need to lose)

Would love to hear from anyone who can provide any extra info :-)

Yes, you can definitely join the waiting list while privately funding treatement - if you get pregnant you will get bumped off the list (I'm not sure at what stage of pregnancy though)

As for the BMI criteria, I imagine they wouldn't be as stringent but I'm not sure - it is probably up to each individual dr.

I seem to be unintentionally stalking your posts mumma2be. Hamilton clinic are quite strict on BMI and I know they refused treatment to one lady who then switched to Wellington clinic who agreed to proceed so I think defo depends on the clinic or Dr. Waitlist is one year from first consultation but yes if successful private cycle you are not eligible for public cycle until that child is 2 I think.

Mumma2be - I can't answer your questions about public funding as I didn't qualify on a number of points so went private from Day 1. I am having treatment in Auckland and am carrying quite a few extra kgs and have had no problems with my doctor. I am active and have no health problems caused by my weight so they have no issues treating me - all they have done is explain that my chances would be better if I lost some weight - 5kg down so far and quite a few more to go!

Can I just say that the points system for public funding totally sucks!! I scored high points in every box barr diagnosis as we were given unexplained diagnosis immensely frustrating here I was 5 months I'd waited for my Otago Fertility Services apt I might add to be told that because I scored a big fat 0 in that box I was not eligible for public funding I was RAGING at the end of that apt I wanted to scream and swear and punch something! esp when I discovered I was to be sent back to local DHB for more tests (tests which I'd asked to have done pre referral but were refused).... 5 months later finally been given date for last test 10 months wasted GRRRRR!!! As it turned out gynae with 1 phone call to OFS to ask if tests he'd already done would be adequate for diagnosis (no phone call was made by secretary to double check). They could have done these tests while I was on the 5 month wait list for OFS and saved me 10 months I'm 38 for Gods sake I don't have time for this sh*t double grrrrr!! Public Health System esp in small town NZ is USELESS!! Don't just sit back and take it FIGHT HARD for your right to be a mother!!
