Hi there
We finally received a letter to say we can go for our first government funded appointment to see a specialist at Fertility Associates in Auckland.
It took a month to get the appointment, and it is this Friday.
So excited, but I know that excitement could come to a screaming halt if we don't get accepted.
Any one else going through this at the moment?
Either you have been accepted for government funding and just waiting for you cycle to start or waiting for your first appointment?

Would be nice to chat with others going through the process.

Hi :)

I have finally got my appointment to sign consents for IVF which is in two weeks time..

I have been under FA chch since beginning of this year and was told the waiting list was about 14months but we start January so hasn't taken too long. although waiting seems forever! Have you been through FA before? Good luck for Friday!

Hi Brownie
Wow, super exciting. Things are starting to happen and January isn't that far away at all. Glad the waiting didn't end up being as long as they thought.

No I have not been through FA before. Haven't done any sort of IVF or fertility treatment before. So while trying to not think about it too often, all it takes is a letter from them, and it is back to the front of your thoughts. At least we will go in to Christmas knowing exactly what to look forward to for the next year.

Is this your first IVF cycle?

It is so exciting I cant wait to do it.

We have tried a few treatment options through FA. Started with Clomid (5 rounds) and got pregnant on our first round but had a MC, then tried Letrozole and more recently have done 2x injectable rounds. Hoping IVF is what we need!!

That is exciting about your appointment. Friday is so soon :) Maybe they will start you off on clomid? Have you or your partner had any tests done? through your gp as this speeds up the process of starting things too :)

I am sorry to hear about your miscarriage. It must have been so heart breaking to get so close.
I will have everything crossed that IVF gives your much wanted baby in your arms.

We know what our issues are. Low sperm count due to a vasectomy and then a reversal. It has been over 5 years since reversal and just with all the scar tissue, everything is blocked up.
We know our fertility was good before we mucked around with it all, as we have children from before vasectomy and reversal.
It is my one big regret, if only we had just left things alone.
But at the time we thought it was the right thing to do.

Hi wanting1more, really hope you are funded, we went through this a while ago, will try to find link to assessment paperwork to give you some idea of if you are likely to be funded. I had a look at this b4 our appointment so already knew we wouldn't be. We had one child already, I was over 35, we had unexplained infertility and had been trying for less than 5 years. Fx for you hun, from memory a vasectomy might loose you a few points though, sorry

Thanks pitter-patter for that link.
It is really helpful.
I did the checklist, and the one piece of information I don't know is my FSH numbers.
Plus I don't know if the fact we have had the vasectomy reversed makes any difference.
But the fact we have been trying for over 5 years I hope will earn us a couple of extra points.

Well doing a happy dance
Been accepted for government funding.
I had a sick feeling in my tummy going in to appointment.
I know we still have a long way to go, but just so happy to be given a chance :)

Hi Wanting 1 More we have just got through our 18 month wait for public funding criteria they will only give it to you if they think you are eligible and I think you should be ok they have a sort of points system I guess you could call it where they have a box which they put a score into for each particular section ie diagnosis age etc the diagnosis is probably the worst part hold on to your hat there will be a few invasive tests... if you don't feel comfortable with student doctors and nurses in the room and feel things are too crowded or you would rather have a senior nurse dealing with you then say so or the whole process can be very daunting... you will be ok and you will find a way through this it is an emotional rollercoaster regular exercise really helps and is really important check out the BMI calculator online and do everything you can to reach your healthy BMI weight range as they will weigh you and it is part of qualifying... I don't want to scare you just be prepared start getting and eating healthy if you have not already done so now look online for this also. We quit smoking cut our bad snacking down to size took a look at our diets started exercising I was walking 2 hours a day now I am running 15km 3 - 4 times a week we also cut out coffee my husband had been drinking 15 - 20 cups of very strong coffee a day which was very bad for him... we also found ways of kept the laptop off my husbands reproductive area which helped. 3 years on after his first test which was quite bad... a lifestyle change was all he needed to turn that around his sperm production has improved dramatically it is me that is the problem but we atleast now after 12 1/2 months of tests now know why... a lot more complicated did not show up on ultrasound scan quite a few things don't so don't take a scan as gospel... any operations you have ever had in the gynae area make sure your file has every note in it I failed to do this and it cost me valuable time... as far as I was aware those notes were in my GP file I was quite alarmed quite a wee way down the track to discover they were not... that operation had everything to do with why I am not getting pregnant and was very important information that was very relevant to my case. My advice be organised read your medical notes if you get a chance make sure all I's are dotted all T's are crossed.. if at any time you are not happy or feel like your gynaecologist does not listen to you which happened to me then ring the fertility clinc and tell them and ask for a second opinion or another gynaecologist. Unfortunately I did this after 12 months... and I should have done this much sooner as the female gynaecologist had worked at a fertility clinic before and had a better bedside manner and more experience in this sort of thing. Be prepared to fight hard tooth and nail for this because believe me you have to fight hard and push hard to get things done through public... my advice get to know the hospital system and how it works... find out where the board office is... how to make formal complaints.. ie health and disability advocates... who the privacy officer is so you can view your file at medical records if you need to... who the head of nursing is in case of any issues with nursing staff and who the head of surgery is in case you have any issues with surgeons not listening to you or whatever reason and you need to organise a formal meeting.. do not hesitate to do this if you need to

Hi Brownie 14 months that's not too bad we had 18 months with Dunedin OFS but mind you Wayne Gillet is one of the most experienced in the South Island from what I've heard and he gets a lot of the more complicated cases from other areas in the south island too apparently might be why we have such a long wait just get through that side of it then have to wait til June 2014 before we can start our 1st cycle of IVF sigh 3 years we have been on this journey I just want it to finally be over and have some closure it's been a long hard road with a lot of setbacks I will just be so glad when I finally have a positive pregnancy test and it's all over at long last

Thanks Hopeful for all your suggestions.
I am a bit of an organisational freak and like to know what I need to know before I get there if I can :)

BMI wise, I just squeezed in, but I am losing weight at the moment, my goal is to be 10kgs lighter by the time its our turn to start. I am doing the low carb, high fat diet and I must say I am finding it really easy, and don't feel hungry, which is great.

Now I just worry about my age and the chances of success. But I guess what ever the outcome, it is well and truly out of our hands.

Going to put hubby on vitamenz about 3 mths before we start. I know it won't probably increase his quantity of sperm, but it should improve the quality and maybe give us better chances of getting pregnant.

Hi Girls talk to your gynae's secretary pre fertility clinic referral if you can about the National Travel Assistance Allowance they can help reimburse you for travel costs and accommodation costs for you and your partner if you need to travel to attend appointments... definitely worthwhile... it does take a wee while to register so the sooner you do it the better :-) Alternatively call 0800 281 222 wait for voice prompt then press 2 they will send them out to you in the mail

Yes I like to be organised to and can be a bit of a control freak sometimes so yes I found the waiting process very difficult... well this whole thing really as you have no control and you have very little idea of what's happening and when and life does get put on hold a bit people like us find this harder to deal with than really laid back cruisey no worries she'll be right mate types but eventually I learnt to let go and just live life reading The Secret helped me keep a more positive leave it in the hands of fate and don't stress out about things outside of your control frame of mind... easier said than done I know it was a real process and still is. Getting hubbys organised to change their diet their bad habits ie smoking drinking and coffee and get them exercising can be difficult... with my hubby we just did things one step at a time biking to work... then smoking once he'd mastered that then swapping coffee and 2 sugars for tea and one sugar then no sugar... walking then small jog now runs 20 km 3 - 4 times a week you slowly build up to it it's not just us that need to be healthy it's them too. Swiss ball is great weight training yoga and pilates is fab also for toning up tummy hips thighs bum and all those areas that we women hate the most as it's always the last place you lose it... or if you want to speed things up go to the health food shop and do a detox chorella is really good you eat your normal 3 meals a day with it full instructions on the back small green pills easy to use is very cheap too under $30 for 90 pills 100% natural plant extract.. you will however need to drink lots of water 2 glasses before bed every night is vitality does dry you out a bit but you lose the weight off your belly hips and thighs within 2 months with combined with healthy eating and exercise very useful when you need to drop 5 - 10 in a month or 2 before an appointment esp at the end of winter. keeping motivated esp in the winter is hard but the secret to weight loss is dedication routine sweat and increasing your heart rate if you don't do this you won't lose weight effectively. I am in southland NZ one of the coldest places to live the winters here are cold dark (very short days and mostly overcast)and miserable but yes even when it rains I'm out there wet weather gear on and going hard we found a track through the native bush that is more sheltered from wind and rain which helps. In winter we both bought a headlight each from Kathmandu as the daylight hours here in winter are very short it's dark by 5.30pm hubby and I do it together and we motivate each other which is good as if one is having an off day the other one will drag you off the couch :-)
