Hey everyone, well went and saw the obstetrician yesterday about whether or not i could have a natural birth or if i had to have another c-section and he said that it would be best if i had another c-section.  I was planning on having them naturally if everything was fine but he said that its safer for me to have a c-section, but its still my decision.

When i had one with my son i was asleep and the obstetrician said that i will be awake for this one, i'm freaking out abit about being cut open while still awake (hope that doesn't gross anyone out) and being able to hear everything.  I know that being awake is better for me and i will get to see my babies straight away.  If any of you have had a c-section while awake please tell me that its not as bad as it think its gona be and put my mind at ease. Thanks Kelly.

I haven't had one, but have been witness to a few for my training etc. I think the part people find the most disturbing is the pulling sensation.. and sometimes they are a little forceful to get baby out, but they have said it's kinda like the dentist.. you feel pulling, but no pain. discuss it with your doc, some people find that sorta thing scary to think of, but they have a screen up, and you don't really hear anything or see anything. It is better for you nd babies if you are awake - as general anaesthetics carry more risks.. just think, at least this way you will be able to see babies straight away without having to wake up and feel all groggy and sick. hope things work out for you no matter what you choose.

I am wondering if I may have to have a c-section as well with my babies.
I have another scan on Mon to see what position they are in, but from the last scan and all the other ones before that- they have been breech.
I was hoping to have them naturally as its a much better recovery and who wants to be stuck in hospital!!
The specialist has said that they may turn but all the kicks I feel are low down.
I am a little freaked by the idea of having a c-section but in saying that they will give me a tubal ligation if all is expected to be well with the babies. yay!!!

I haven't had much experience with c-sects (other than freaking out and asking for one a few weeks before I had Maya!), but my Mum had a c-sect under general anasthetic when she had my youngest brother, and she said she felt groggy for days afterwards. I don't know what pain levels etc. after a c-sect with epidural, but I do know that I had the epidural durng labour and I was up and walking around shortly afterwards.

Also, my aunty had a c-sect with epidural and they left the epi in and kept topping it up for the first couple of days afterwards to help with pain relief.

I'm having another scan on tuesday.  The obstetrician said that i need to have monthly growth scans just wondering if you had this Delaneyhoes.  I think i want to be awake as i didn't get to see my son for an hour and a half because of being under general and even then i was sleeping most of the time was not a nice experience.

Yeah we are having 2 girls. I have had them check 3 times now and each time they say girls. 2 boys and 2 girls nice and easy.
I cant imagine what it would of been like finding out half way thru the pregnancy that it was twins! We were told at the first scan at 7 weeks and that was scary enough!
I am really starting to feel the size difference of having twins, I feel much bigger now than I did with my singleton preggys and I am not really that big belly wise-so I have been told. I think it has something to do with the fact that I have had gall stones and have had to be really strict with what I eat. It will all help after babies are born.
My concern now is the Super bug going around Wellington hospitals baby unit. I am to have my babes in wellington and I dont really want them exposed to that!

ew that superbug sounds scary!!

i think for the most part of the first 24 hrs they give you a pump in your iv, that allows you to self-admin pain releif as needed (it has a time-delay lock, lol, so no overdoses!!!)

my little sis had general, and i was still allowed to go in with her. but it took her the better half of 3 days to stop being groggy - i think she liked the pain releif too much as well.. lol. but it was weird.. you'd be talking to her and the next minute she would just fall asleep.. not great when you have a young baby to tend to!

When I was pregnant with my son, he was in the breech position so my midwife loaned me a rocker thingy. I had to use it several times a day but by the time I went into labor he had turned around. Maybe ask your OB/midwife about it. I dont know what its called but from memory, you sat on it and moved you hips back and forth.
Hope it helps.

Hi Kas. I had my C section while I was awake. I was too busy talking to my partner to notice any noises. I did notice a pulling sensation but it didn't hurt.
Ok I know people are going to think I am a freak for saying this but I wanted them to pull the curtain down so I could see him when he came out.
I'm not squeamish at all but my partner was like "how weird would it be to see your tummy all open like that?????"
I have to say I found the recovery time pretty easy. I had Alex at 11.29pm on Labour Day & then had a good five hours sleep before getting up & having a shower. Still very sore but any way of giving birth has to have some kind of pain? And so worth it aye!

Hoping for natural next time around though! :)

Hi everyone, Just to let you know about the Superbug thing at Wellington Hosp. One of my friends went in last Thursday to have her twins, one was 4lb and the other was 6lb, born at 36 weeks. Both of them had to go into Neonatal (precautionery) and yeah both of them have been placed in the isolated area. They are basically saying that any new babies from when they released the news are placed in their own seperate area. Sounds fairly safe to me, but its not like you can see the bugs flying around, guess we just have to trust them, aye?

Yep, I was reading in the paper over the weekend that the risk to new babies coming in is no greater than in any other neonatal unit around the country as they have isolated the bug but as a precaution they are only taking premies from the Wellington area, any in the outlying areas that are normally zoned for Wellington are being sent to other hospitals.

Hi Kas,

I had a c-section 4 months ago and it's not as bad as you think. I stressed myself out that much the night before i was sick, how ever when it happened you seem to get so excited about seeing bubs that you forget to be worried. You feel a wee bit of pulling and prodding but it does'nt hurt at all. My anestist (wow what bad spelling) talked me and hubby the whole way though it. We are squeamish and waited until they held her up for us.

As for pain I was up and about after about 6 hours but was'nt in any real pain. They had me on a self medicating morfen (shocking spelling my brains stopped functioning today) drip and gave me panadol and voltarin, I refused all but panadol by the second day as I felt to out of it. I found the pain no worse than a natural birth. I had good support at home so I left hospital after 48 hours. Would have stayed longer if I had twins though.

Yeah the anesthetist that did my sister's did say that usually the side effects of the morphene are worse than the little bit of pain. still i spose, either way you're gonna be in some pain.. at least with a c-section you can probably sit down a bit easier later on. lol

Heck yes. I actually found recovery faster after the C-section than natural birth. Much easier to sit and you don't have to worry about the toilet and dreaded stitches.

Well i had my scan yesterday and everything is great the babies are growing well.  She is 2lb 9oz and He is 2lb 6oz and there sizes are perfect with my dates aswell so it was so good to know that they are growing well.  He is still head down but she is breech but if i do decide to have a c- section then that won't matter at all. And yes it cost me $20 which i didn't think is would as i had been referred by my obstetrician but never mind.

Thanks to everyone on the advice and your experience's with c-section's i guess now its just a matter of me making up my mind as to what i want to do.

HI Kas,
I had my scan on Mon and yes I had to pay as well! $25
The babies have decided to change who the presenting baby is. On my left side was baby 'A' who is now head down, and on my right side was baby 'B' who is still breech. B is now the presenting baby and unless it turns it looks as if I am destined for a ceaser. Oh well I am not too worried about it as it means a Tubal ligation WOO HOOOOO!!

The babies do have a bit of a difference in weight tho, my left baby is weighing in at around 3lb 11 1/2 oz and my right baby is about 4 lb 8 1/2 oz. Still they are healthy and doing well so I guess the size difference comes down to them being genetically different.

Cool Delaneyhoes glad your babies are doing well there is abit of a weight difference but i guess one is always gona be bigger then the other, i was surprised because my girl was bigger then my boy but i guess that could all change no doubt he will catch up one day.If you have to end up having a c-section will you pick a date or go into labour and then have one.  I don't really want to pick my babies birthdays but at this stage it looks like i might have to.

Well Had another scan today and the presenting baby is now head down. The other baby is back in a breech position. I have to see the specialist on Wed and the decision will be made then if I am going to have a c-section or an induction.
I have heard bad things about being induced and I am not really looking forward to that being a posibility.

Anyways baby A the littler one is now weighing about 5.5lbs and baby B is about 6.5lbs give or take and I only have 3 weeks to go until they want the babies out of me.
Fun fun fun.

Hi delaney. I was kinda induced. jake was two weeks late and the midwife broke my waters. Even though jake was presenting the largest part of his head...and facing the wrong way (thanks son!!) my birth was only 4 hours and although pretty painful, i survived with gas and pethedine.....so it wasn't THAT bad I think....looking back....

I have spoken to a friend of mine who had a similar experience and she said it wasnt as bad as she thought it was going to be.
I guess at the end of the day, I want the babies out - I have had enough - so what ever method I will be happy with i think.

Cool Becks your babies will be a good size then, what did the specialist say about having the babies?  I see my specialist next Thursday.

In my case they have to be in the same bedroom because we only have a 3 bedroom house although in the beginning they will prob be in our room just to make things easier.  This is all so new to me and i'm a little unsure about how to do things but i guess it will all come together in the end.

My specialist picked the 21st as that is after my 38 week mark and when she is doing her thing in Hosp.

Also in my situation the babies are going to share a room, they will be in our room sharing a cot for the first little while and then I think we will just take it from there. For me too this is all very new to me... only this morning I was doing a list of things to take to the hospital and man oh man there is so much when you have twins! 2 lots of everything adds up, lets just hope they dont think I am moving in LOL.

I have to admit I am getting really nervous now, not just about having the twins and how that will all go but afterwards as well. The sleepless nights, feeding, changing - all the stuff that you worry about with a singleton...multiplied!

I've been thinking about all that stuff lately aswell i remember how hard it was in the beggining with Blair and this time i have to do it with do.  I'm going to Breast feed and see how it goes are you going to breast feed or bottle feed (hope you don't mind me asking)?  I guess it will be all about trial and error and will just have to figure out what works best.

Good Luck with all the packing and getting ready for your girls to be born i'm getting really excited for you.

If you don't mind me asking, where in NZ do you girls live? The reason I'm asking is because in Hamilton, at Waikato Hospital, there's a place called MotherCraft. They are a sleeping and feeding help specialist type of place. You stay in a private room with your baby/ies and they help you establish appropriate routines. You are there for a week, Monday afternoon until Friday morning. Oh, and it's free.

I went there with Kiya when she was 6 months old. I was living with my parents and my (then) primary-school aged siblings. There were 6 of us in a three bedrooom house, and I couldn't let Kiya make much noise at night. My Mum was working full-time, my Dad was a full-time student, and my sister was 10 and my brother was 8, so everyone needed their sleep more than I did. Plunket refered me to MotherCraft so I could get Kiya used to sleeping in her own bed again.

It was great. They (in their own words) be the "bad guys" and keep putting baby down while you relax knowing you are getting the help you need! While I was there, there was a Tauranga mum who had just had twins, then transferred over to MotherCraft. They were helping her establish sleep/feed routines she would be able to impliment when she got home. They helped her to offset the twins by 20 minutes: so one would wake, be fed and changed and sorted out, then the other would wake and so on.

Maybe there's something similar where you are, or you can go to MotherCraft.

Kas, I too am planning on breastfeeding, but I am not going to stress myself about it if it seems like I am getting too drained(pardon the pun!lol) then I will put them onto a bottle or maybe even bottle and breast feed. I think it will be trial and error for us.

Its a good feeling knowing that we are almost there and that the babies are well and healthy. I was worried that they would be born early and have to be in care for a while but I am now 36 weeks and only have 15 days to go! YAY

I think one of my fears with breastfeeding twins is the feeling of being on show.
I fed my first son till he was 6 months old and my second son till he was 10 months old without any trouble at all. I know I will have the supply there as I am full and leaky (nice!!) already, but I dont like the idea of being so exposed if I feed both at the same time or feeding for such a long period of time if I feed seperatly.

ARGH... who knows, maybe I should just play it by ear and see how I go! I will have formula on hand just in case its all too much to cope with tho!

I now what you mean it was hard enough breast feeding one baby in the beggining let alone two at least i know that i will have the milk like you as i leak now also and when i was breast feeding Blair i had so much milk i could have Breast feed twins then.

Thats not a bad idea having formula on hand for just in case i never thought of that good thinking Becks.

I know what you mean about being a bit scared knowing when your babies are going to be born, but now I am used to the idea it has been good for me to have a date to work towards.
I like knowing that unless I go into labour early, I have a set amount of time to get things done and also I wont go past that date - 21st June.
Still its all a bit weird and soon we will be so busy with the babies that this time in our lives will be but a blur!
Do you have any names picked out yet?

We think the names are going to be Ryan and Katelyn (thats how my husband wants to spell it so she can be called kate for short).  Do you have any girls names yet?  Have you found it hard to pick girls names over your boys names?

I guess the specialist will give me a time when we get closer to the date and depending on what happens work towards that.  I agree Becks at least we know when we have to have everything organised by which i suppose is a good thing.

It was much easier to think of boys names but in the end we came up with 2 girls names that we both really like.
Ella Brooke and Bree Anderson.
Picking the middle names was harder than the first names as you need to make sure that for one it flows and that both sets of names sound right together and I guess that they have some meaning for you. Which is what we got in the end.

Ryan will prob be Ryan Mark Shane and Katelyn well we are still thinking for her.  Still got a little bit of time left to think but we better get our act together they will be here before i know it and i dont want a nameless baby girl.

If you are wanting a natural birth you could always speak to a home birth midwife. More chance of a natural birth if you were interested
