Im here!!! Well im a may mum (20th May) but im a June mum at heart So I will be staying put.
First day home yesterday, James is 2 weeks old. Last night was the first night ive had him in the same room as me, went really well. Neonates had him in a great routine so im doing my best to keep that.
He is back up to his birth weight too! Very hard to find anything that fits him though, he swims in everything.
Breast feeding is going well, he is very sleepy though due to only being 36 weeks now so alot of the feeding time is spent waking him and encouraging him to suck and swallow.
Cant wait for the rest of you to join me!!

i dont mind i love the name. then reealised after we'd decided on it that i have n uncle and a cousin named james lol. so you could imagine how excited they are.
you can get battry powered ones that are much lighter than power using night lights, we never used one, and yeah it took haleigh a while to get used to no light and noise after being on the uv bed, she used to sleep with the tv on in our room it seemd to be the only way to get her to sleep, and we just turned the volume down low and turned off when we went to bed.

Have you tried playing some relaxing type music quietly? We have Sanctuary by Ana & Norval Williamson. My foster sister used to play it to her children & I even listen to it when i find it hard to sleep. It has nature sounds of birds, water etc. You can get it from Natures Window & they usually have a display where you can have a little listen before you buy otherwise check out their website http://www.kmpmusic.co.nz - www.kmpmusic.co.nz

Thanks for the ideas.
Last night he went to bed at 10pm not much fuss, had the night light on. At 12.30 he started stirring, at 1am he got up.. feed, burped, changed nappy, feed, burped, back to bed around 1.15am, well....at 2am I put him next to me in bed cause I just needed to sleep and he was wide awake, by about 3am he was asleep, then up for feed at 5.30am, back down at 6am, up again 9.30am feed, bath and back to bed no probs at all. So its just that middle of the night feed he wont settle back down and go to sleep......

I'm having the same night time sleeping issue at the moment! I feed him, change him and put him back to bed at 2 or 3AM he just won't settle. He doesn't usually cry or scream, just stays awake grunting and snorting and generally being wide awake! I decided to change him before feeding him, because he usually falls asleep while being fed and changing wakes him right up again, and it sort of works.
I'm hoping it's a growth spurt and it will pass as last week he slept for four hour stretches over night all week!
|
Posted By: kell
Date Posted: 06 June 2007 at 7:22pm
Ohhh, I may try that, only prob being because he was born at 34 weeks he is quite sleepy when he feeds and changing his nappy was my trick to wake him enough to finish feeding....will try though!I spoke to the m/w about it today and she said it was just his unsettled time of time Some babies have it around tea time, James has it in the middle of the night. Today ive been waking him every 3 hours instead of 4 and kept him awake for an hour, hopefully this may break his night habit, we can only try

Sleep was good last night 10pm feed was unsettled but thats better than at 2am! He went to sleep at about 11pm, woke up at 1.30am fed the went to sleep no fuss, back up at 5.30am. Fingers crossed tonight is just as good. I have been waking him during the day after 3 hours if he isnt awake and keeping him awake for a full hour if I can, I think this is helping with the nights.

Sorry just read this Any more questions? lol
My birth story pretty much summed it up in a nut shell, I didnt want to go on an on and bore people.
Sleep is still our big issue, but hay im not the only one! He has a nasty rash on his bottom which I asked the community m/w to look at last week and she it was fine, then I asked to her to look again as I thought it was not fine and now she says ohhhh its pretty bad and get this cream! grrrrr. I only use flannels and have been giving him nappy free time with some sun, better get this antifungal cream and hope it clears it up.
How often does your m/w visit? She came yesterday and I will see her again in a week. The community ones are pretty slack down here I reckon, they have weighed James once and never check him over, they wont even give me a script for anything, I asked about contraception and she said I would have to go to the docs. Just finding it very different to the care I had with Kayla in Aucks, they prescribed me bum cream, gave me iron pills, and sorted out my "pill" script.
ramble over

Thats pretty slack Kell, the MW's here are really good at prescribing things. Lots of condom scripts and pills and the odd pamol for the babies. Im certainly going to be asking for heaps.... then again, being a pharmacist may help!!
------------- http://lilypie.com">
|
Posted By: kell
Date Posted: 13 June 2007 at 3:22pm
lol yes that may help!!
I was shocked when I asked her for a pill script and she said no. I said well I just take the old ones in my drawer then and she made me through them out! (they expire in 09) Then when I asked if she could prescribe something for his bottom she said no too! I had to go buy something called dakta???? She didnt even offer condoms NOTHING!! I shut the front door behind her and said F*cking waste of time (I hope she heard me)
Youd think if you had a baby at 34 weeks and the NNU let you home after 2 weeks on the condition he was weighed every other day to make sure his weight gain was acceptable, that they would a) weight him and b) come round more than twice a week, and now its once a week.
Grrrr OK promise ramble over

I love my postnatal midwife, she's really lovely and helpful and is coming to check up on me tomorrow after our first full day at home. Must say that I'm glad DH is here so that we can share the load now!
Such a learning curve for both of us who have never really been around babies at all so we are both very much newbies!
Baby blues are starting to come on now too which also sucks a little but at least it was expected!!

after i ahd haleigh my mw perscribed me with my antibiotics and i decided nto to worry abotu contraception till i saw my doc at 6wks for my smear so i got my pill perscription then.
but theya re supose to see you as often as needed and when you need them and weigh baby every visit (if not asleep )
haleigh had jaundice and was stilla little yellowish even after 4 days on uv bed so my mw checked that and helped df out with anything eh needed help with, wven looked after haleigh for me to shower or have a long soak in the bath.
bad nappy rash i have always used bethapen (sp) right from early days, the antibacterial one and normal one depending on the rash.
but I would think you would be seen lots becasue of your circumstances.

I have no family here and DH leaves just after 6am and isnt home till 7pm he isnt even home at all tonight. Its like they see me doing fine and think ah well its number 2 she'll be right!
Ive been using sudocream? since we came home as he had a bit of a rash in hosp. Im also using calandula oil on his bottom every nappy change. Will look for that antifungal one though.

waht about plain baby oil or the vitamin E & aloe vera one?

Nah my postnatal MW isn't Janet - shes studying so gets one of the hospital MW's to do her postntal stuff. THank god it's not the other MW from peach babies because I don't like her much
Seems I have a clogged milk duct just expressed it all out. My god there was sooooo much milk in there! Especially considering my milk is only just coming in! Feels so much better to have it emptied out!! Am soooo thankful I got a electric breast pump before he arrived
|
Posted By: yalanna

Yep daktozin is supposed to be pretty good Kel, but there are other antifungal creams she could have prescribed that would have cost you nothing!! Not quite the same, but free.
I reckon we pay enough tax in our lives that its good to take advantage of anything the govt subsidises.. such as midwives. Maybe she isnt very confident at prescribing and so avoids it. Might have to ask your GP at the 6 week checkup instead.

Yes he's improved sooooooo much. When he was born he had sooo much mucus he wasn't at all interested in feeding. I had to express and feed him by spoon for the first 24 hrs because he just couldn't feed with his mucus, also because of his bottom lip, he constantly sucked it in and kept his tongue high making latching impossible.
Now though we are great on my right side. The only thing holding us back on the left side is my blocked duct. He gets very impatient with it so it's a mixture of expressing and getting him on.

So who do you see stacey? I have the 2 hospital m/w.
Alanna thanks for that info! I have my hospital check in a few weeks so it its before James' I will get them to prescribe me something. Its great you know all this
She said they had a small list of things they could prescribe I couldnt believe the pill wasnt one of them...

I'm seeing Rachael Wong..
He's now feeding about every 3 hrs which is good cause he use to be sooo sleepy (jaundice and difficult birth to blame apparently) that he wasn't feeding often enough. I don't find the nights too bad, usually get up 4 or 5 times, always for wind but some for feeding.. DH is shattered after 1 night of it though hehehe

Ooooo I only just found this! Sounds like all the new mummies are settling in pretty well I have found it all soooo much easier second time around (except for the whole birth part ), I don't think Kate is any easier than Charlotte was, we just have a better idea of what we are doing and its so much easier when one of you knows how to BF! Shes a great little feeder and yesterday- when she was 5 days old, she was weighed again and had put on another 4 oz since birth!
I am demand feeding and she seems to be cluster feeding for about an hour and 1/2 and then sleeps 3 hours, quick feed and sleeps another 3 hours then repeats it. Works well as long as the cluster feeding isn't in the middle of the night! My Mum left today which was pretty sad- am wondering a bit how I will cope without her help. DH is staying home tomorrow morning to help with taking Charlotte to school then come Monday I am all on my own- gulp

Thats good Stacey, dont know that m/w.
Jen we are demand feeding too but he wakes himself every 3 hours and if he hasnt woken I have to wake him (not at night though, but he doesnt go past 3 hours at night!)
Ive been on my own since we got home, you will be fine
I have found ive just had to let me standards slip a bit, just take time to find your groove.
James is very different to Kayla as a baby, he is very unsettled at night and im lucky to get 3/4 hours sleep through the course of it. Im finding im alot more confident, but diff not easier.

OMG My naughty little girl(well she was up until yestaerday) Slept from 10:30-5:30 last night!!! IN my bed though!!!She is good at sleeping in her bassinett in the day but from afternoon onwards just feeds constantly every 20 mins or so, and will not go in her bed. So i take her to bed with me at night and feed her lying down and she seems to settle better.
Man she gets bad wind though.Makes her really grumpy in the afternoon.
Would you believe this!!!.... Yesterday the midwife (one i havnt met before) tried to cut off her belly cord as it was scratching her tummy. And she sliced her tummy with the scissors!!! F****** stupid B****!
I couldnt believe it! bleeding everywhere and screaming. She actually tried to cover it up at first and got me to rush off and get some cotton balls pretending it was just the belly cord stump bleeding.
She had put her nappy back on when i got back so i couldnt see it! Then a while later she told me what happened because she wanted to check it!It has stopped bleeding by then but was all over her singlet. UNBELIEVEABLE!!! My poor little baby!

Nah it's not soo easy, I use to check out so many threads and now it's just the June ones!
Stupid MIL today though.. she came over with DH's bro who came up to visit. That was fine but she kept him up for far too long and then I had to feed him after they left and so he got cranky from being overtired.

I found that really hard as well Stacey, as my MIL came over on the day we got home from the hospital and kept Sam up for ages cuddling him and not letting him sleep. It put me out for nearly two days! Visitors in the first few weeks are so keen to see you and the baby, but a day at home by yourself and the baby is so good as all you have to worry about is them and it's easier to get them off to sleep!

OMG Aleisha I thought they were supose to jsut let it fall off naturally, I wouldnt be very impressed if my midwife decided to cut it off.
Yup Michelle ahd her baby posted up in the June MTB thread wee girl.
I had people keeping haleigh awake all the time, its horrible when people basically try and wake up baby jsut so they cna have a cuddle, the amount of times MIL picked up haleigh when she was sleeping and woke her up screaming then Id have her shoved straight back over again to try settle back down again.
I forget about this thread to, but Im sure once bubs arrives I will remember to pop on over

make sure you put your foot down when it comes to bubs. My mum was the worst offender but now gets strongly put in her place by me if she trys to do something that we don't want her to. Makes the world of difference to Jack
(is much easier to do though when you aren't feeling quite so sleep deprived)

That is horific about the cord!
I dont think James has a wind prob but im sure he has a reflux prob, m/w is here on monday again so will see if she is helpful at all otherwise I'll pop to the doctor.
Do you swaddle your babies for every sleep?

I do. We kinda have to or we would never get any sleep because he wakes himself up with his hands. As soon as one is free he wakes himself up!

yep Im going to be strict on visitors (well at least try) not too sure even if we are going to tell people when hes here will see how it all goes, but at the end of the day we are the ones left dealing with the bubbas, but I am going to have him in the lounge with me during the day & our room at night so he gets used to noise & people but if hes asleep hes staying asleep......

I'm trying to be strict on visitors but it is hard sometimes. It's easy to say yes or no before they arrive. But once they are here it's very hard to get them to bugger off sometimes. My mum is good and is bringing over my grandparents and is doing so so that she can supervise how long they stay as she will be the driver and won't allow my grandma to be a pain and wake him up if he's asleep or something.
But my basic rule is that people have to ring before they come and if I say no to a certain time (because I know he will be asleep or feeding then) then they get told in no uncertain terms to stay away! lol

Oh and my man was weighed again today. Going by the scales he's lost 500 grams! eek! MW wasn't worried though as they were different scales and he didn't really feed much for the first couple of days with all our feeding difficulties in the beginning. But now he's feeding well so should put the weight back on fast as he's turned into my little piglet!

We had a few feeding difficulties in the first few days as well which meant Sam didn't feed much and lost nearly 600gms, but he's put on a whole pound a week since then!

Yeah I'm not too worried about the weight loss once I got over the initial surprise that it was so much. But since hes such a pig he will make it up pretty fast

James has to be swaddled too, if his arms are out he will wake.
Go little piggy lol I love their faces when the nipple hits there lips and they open their mouths and shake their heads around trying to get booby! James is a piggy too.

lol it's funny how impatient Daniel gets for booby. He can never take the nipple when he's shaking his head. I wish sometimes he would realise if he kept his head still and stopped being impatient he would actually get his milk much much faster!

Ha! Yip, and the look on their face when your milk lets down and it comes out fast, thats priceless! James pulls off to catch his breath and gets covered in milk.

oh the joys of what I have to look foward to. Look out for leakages during "special cuddles" a friend advised me (not that its at the top of the list of priorities atm im sure)

lol since I still have stitchs and I have to sit on a pillow with a hole in the middle I don't think DH will be expecting any special cuddles in the near future! And I have to wear breast pads 24/7 anyway because I drip like a tap!
Daniel had a good night last night! I think we are getting into a little routine even as he's beginning to wake at the same times each night which I'm pleased about! He's also feeding way way better on my bad side!!!

That's great that Daniel is getting better at feeding on the bad side Stacey! great you seem to have no supply problems either - lol at your mega dripping boobs!
