This is an Australian article, not sure what the rules about this are in NZ.

It must be the hardest decision for a couple to make though. The article really got me thinking, and I still don't know what I'd do in this situation.

That is a really interesting situation.. and yes each option brings with it very different ideas.. i would feel weird about having other people raise my own genetic bubs.. but i couldn't donate to research. and why oh why after all that time and money would you destroy them i spose in that case i would probably donate them, surely one day there would be some link back to you though.. they would have to keepo your name etc and details for potential donors for tissue and blood types i guess for compatibility too? (ok too much thought now)

I always thought that i'd love to be a surrogate as my pregnancies were wonderful and quick births.. but who's to say that would be the same if it was a baby that wasn't a mix of me and mike.. maybe we have just been lucky so far. I do know my friend is facing a hysterectomy this year for ongoing bad gyne probs.. she's only 24 and wouldl ove kids. I feel so bad for her to not even have the option of IVF or anything similar.. her only chance will be adoption or maybe surrogacy if that ever becomes legal here.

Surrogacy is legal here, it's just subject to strict criteria and has to be approved by an ethics committee. A girl I was at uni with did it, she was pregnant at the same time as I was with Maya, and I did find it a bit odd being back at uni after Maya was born with a baby and her being back at uni with no baby.

I can understand donating an egg once your family is complete, as it is still to be matched to complete a *baby*....but an embryo presumable that is yours and your hubbys is different...to me that is a child that is being adopted out. Now I am all for adoption but i couldnt adopt out my child (ok well some days maybe i could!) and a completed embryo is as good as a child.

Surrogacy is very different....i see the surrogate as a carrier for a couples child....now i would love a surrogate cause i do pregncy miserably!!!

I tend to agree with you, BS, in that donating an embryo is effectively adopting a child out. I don't think I could donate an embryo to strangers, but to good friends or family who couldn't create their own? I'd definitely consider it.

I've thought about egg donation and the pros & cons etc. I know what joy I get from Caitlin and if I can help another woman/couple have that experience too then I would like to. But we'll see how old I am after we have #2, I might be an unsuitable doner

As for the embryo thing, for me that's too much of me & DH. That IS a child to me and I personally wouldn't be able to do that.
