Anyone else see this couple on Closeup the other night?
What are your thoughts on this one - are BDM being reasonable or unreasonable here?
There's an http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/6/story.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=10447051 - article about them in today's Herald for anyone who missed the Closeup story.

BDM are only following the guidelines that have been set down.
I have a cousin who wanted to name his baby Duke and was told you can't cause its a title.
New Zealand has quite relaxed rules compared to some counties, I guess its a case by case basis.
Initially I thought the name was ok, but then when they said they were going to name their next baby 4 Sure and 4 Eva, maybe thats taking the mickey a bit.

Also, I think BDM are within theire rights against stopping ridiculous names, and should be tougher. Now, I'm not saying our country should do this, but there are some countries where there is a list of "acceptable" names you can use.
I am thinking that these two didn't have enough brain cells between them to think about when that child is an adult trying to be taken seriously...

One of BDMs criteria. 'It is also advised that parents avoid names which would cause their child to be teased or made fun of'
I would be suprised if there was a single person who hadn't been made fun of cause of their name.

Oh my gosh that is so funny... DH and I were talking about baby names the other day and I joked that we should name our baby 7. Yep just 7. The other option was Nebuchadnezzar, so that shows the extent of the conversation.
I agree that numbers aren't names... and I think it's good that BDM stepped in.
But then again, don't you think Nebuchadnezzar is just as cruel? What if we seriously wanted to name our kid that, I'm sure we'd be allowed to? Where do you draw the line?

These people shouldn't have the right to name their children if they give them such ridiculous names. It's just cruel.
Car names - fine. No probs there. They ARE names of something in the first place. But 4 Real? Honestly, these people need to be hit over the head because clearly they're not thinking straight. What horrible people! Isn't it every parents job to stop their children from being teased/harrassed etc?

i think spelling it forreal would be ok - weird but ok! and real estate agent or not they def sound trailer trash to me....you can take them out of the trailer but...
I went to school with heaps of "girlie" and "boy" - can anyone say south auckland in the 70s? Now that way of naming should be outlawed too!!!
I still think a name can stop someone getting a job etc later on in life....people should think more carefully....

I totally agree! Whether people like to think it or not, their children will one day be adults and may possibly want to be respected. How are you respected when your parents have called you '4 real' or '4 sure'?!

there was a little girl whose parents were in the ww a yearago or so, and she had died. she was named V8. seriously.

As far as I am aware, France has a list of "approved" names that prospective parents choose from. I know they did, I'm fairly sure they still do (too lazy to check)
And celebs with weird names for children? Rob Morrow (Don Epps on Numb3rs) and his wife Debon Ayre (sp?) wanted their daughter to have a fun name like her mum so they named her Tu. Yes, Tu Morrow. They call her Tui like the bird as a nickame.

Fattartsrock - the reason is that you can have a number in the name, but it cannot start with a number. Probbably because of the difficulties numbers at the start would give to alphabetising and stuff liket hat, more than it simply being a stupid name.
Yeah, i can see me goingto a lawyer/doctor etc called 4real. :tui:

I heard on National Radio (yes I am sad, old and boring) that the parents have come to a compromise with BDM. Dont know what it is, but suspect they have to spell it out in letters rather than use the number.
I personally think this is so stupid, and the poor child is going to be effected for life. I think that everyone is shaped by their name, whether consciously or not. You very rarely come across a female judge, doctor or lawyer with a name like Bluebell or Pixie do you? (For the record - both of these names were on my girls name list...!! )

Wow what a response...Personally I like the name obviously not the way it is spelt but there are other ways they can spell the name to make it more attractive....Foreal, Phreal...
Everyone has a right to choose their childs name regardless of what other people think, and respect is gained by your actions and what kind of person you are it has nothing to do with a name....
Remember 4real maybe the name they register him under but he may be known as something else...like his middle name..
My son has a different name too so I am in no place to judge those parents who come up with strange/unusual names...
It is obvious we are not all going to agree one way or the other but there is no need to make snarky remarks about the parents or what they will name their other children....none of us know if the child will like/hate his name or even if he will be teased at school...we are all just make assumptions.

So if they spell 4real, phoreal, or something like that, are they going to spell their next child (4sure) foreshore? surely that will also have some debate about it? either that or later in life the child will be asked, 'oh so your parents had something to do with he foreshore and seabed issues??'
im just saying, that u kinda do have to think of the kid, why give them one name and not mind if they hate it so much they want to change it by the time they are 10 to stop the bullying???
just my opinion, you have to look at the effect it will have on the child

There are names and then there are nouns, they are not necessarily the same thing. Lycan and Alize are actual names for people. There are children out there called Riot and Kaos, Foreal isn't a name its a slogan. Its like calling your kid Coke or Pepsi.
I wish parents would put some thought into what they name their children, I've had to go thru life with a name my parents picked from a movie. By the time I was old enough to change it, was kind of used to it.
And Max is a nice name, however there are too many dogs with that name.

I'm not picking on you, honest! but... I chose Kiya's name out of a movie, and Nat and I have another girls name from a different movie we would like to use in the future. As someone who's name came from a movie, why was it a bad thing? (I'm genuinely curious)

At the time 1973, it was unusual to name your child after someone in a movie, I got teased a lot about my name when I was in school, people still have a hard time spelling it.
I guess its more common now to use names from movies.
Its interesting that I trend towards more traditional/common names for my future (unborn) children based on my experience, where as I know people who are the opposite for the same reason.
