Hi Ladies

I had a scan yesterday and just noticed the report. It says that my baby is in an extended leg breech, I think it means that the baby is head up legs down. Shouldn’t it be head down leg up by now? Is this normal? Will the baby turn in the next 12 weeks?

Do I sound Stupid? (Wait don’t answer that)...

hhhm i would hope that it does, if i remember rightly Ayja didn't turn till she was about 30 weeks or so i think, maybe more, but she was lying across-ways, so maybe it was easier for her to turn. Talk to your midwife about it, i remember mine telling me that they don't usually worry about it till about 34 weeks or so and even then they usually try to turn baby manually from the outside first at about 36 or 37 weeks, till then alot of people i've heard of have tried making sure they sit forward, spend time on all fours, and all sorts of other thing to make baby turn, I can't remember all of them but your midwife should be able to help you, and probably more of the ladies on here will remember more too.

Abby was breech at 30 weeks and we had scans right up until a couple of days before she was born. They don't usually see it as a problem until 34-36 weeks, but even then we were told if there's room there is still a good chance of baby turning on its own. In our case she didn't and was born by C-section. But you never know they may be able to turn bub around, or it may decide to move on it's own. Sending baby turning vibs your way.

My best advice for you is to really arm yourself with informaiton. We were told by one specialist that she couldn't be turned and took his word as gospel, that was four weeks before she was due. however in hindsight I have heard of so many babies that have been manually turned as late as 39 weeks, and wish we had got a second opinion or asked then to try anyway. Sometimes it doesn't pay to go private.

I wouldn't worry about it at your stage.  Babies still move round lots.  Sophie didn't turn to head down till about 36/37 weeks

Yep, I agree, plenty of time to turn! They usually say that if a baby hasn't turned by 36 weeks then it will usually need help as it runs out of room to move, although my Mum says I was breech and turned only a few days before I was born.

Getting down on all fours does help tho, as it gives baby the maximum possible room to move. Maya was posterior, and I used to kneel on the ground and lean over a beanbag, this is supposed to help with breech babies too.

Ditto what everyone else says - or so I've been told. GP did an examination yesterday and shes pretty certain baby is already head down. She said it is relatively early for this to happen, but everyone is diferent. I am so sure I felt the baby turn on Saturday night - it was squirming around for ages and nothing would settle it. It felt very different to the other movements I had felt. It must have been running out of room lying transverse!

So I guess at I should start having classes next week huh? since I will be 29 weeks. Where can I find these classes? Can you do them after hours?

after 2 different midwifes told me jack was head down, at my 37wk check with my regular midwife she suspected he was lying breech. she told me not to panic as there was still time for him to turn but booked me to have a scan to check if she was right. sure enough, at 38wks he was breech. they tried to turn him manually but it didn't work so i had an elective c-section at 39wks.
i wouldn't worry to much at this stage, there's plenty of time.

I am doing classes at the community hospital where I will probably deliver. U are in Aucklnad arent u Roksana? I guess it depends where u r planning on having the baby, but I know national womens does classes. I assume there would be heaps to choose from up there. There was info in my pregnancy pack thing I got when I first saw my GP. Your m/w should be able to recommend??

yep try ringing your hospital and they will have classes they can book you into. now is about the right time to start them as most usually run about 8 weeks. good thing about them is they are free. most parent's centres etc run them too but you have to pay for them, although most of the time they run shorter courses, sometimes weekends. most classes usually run at night so both you and hubby can go together.

We did antenatal classes through a high school evening course, might be something like that in your area?? They taught us methods for turning babies there come to think of it. Our course was 6 weeks long and I wouldn't leave it Roksana as some of the mums that were pretty far along missed the last couple of weeks due to their babies coming early LOL, was definitley worth it to go.

I was on my all fours last night for about half an hour, while hubby was massaging my belly and saying " I think you should turn now baby"....LOL

It was funny and embarrassing at the same time....

try sitting forward. i used to sit with my bottom as far back on the couch as i could and lean right over, resting elbows on my knees as if i was leaning to look at something on the floor, and if you are reading, stick the book on the floor between your legs and read it that way. pretty soon you get used to doing it and it doesn't look quite as weird as crawling around on all fours. lol.

Pelvic tilts help to turn bubs around. My last midwife had a special chair thingy she loaned me to help turn my last one, it worked. If you can get hold of a birthing ball or one of those exercise balls, sit on it, and rock only your hips backwards and forwards should help to turn bubs.
Good luck

roksana - there is still time for baby to turn (up to about 34weeks) Another effective way to turn babies is accupunture.   This is well worth a try should your little one decide to stay bum down! Also Birthcare (in Parnel) run antenatal classes that are free. But youd be lucky to get in now - maybe its worth a ring? In fact - i had accupunture from 20 odd weeks this last pregnancy and i never had such a good pregnancy - i didnt even feel pregnant!! even in the last month!! Its a good general thing for mum and babes general wellbeing and body tune up!! Can help you prepare for labour too! good luck!

Nadine, my hubby really likes accupunture...he plays alot of sports and every time he gets hurt he goes for it...I dont like needles but have had accupunture before. Would most accupunturist know how to do that? or would I need to go to a specific one?

I am attending Antenatal classes but they are yet to tell us what to do to turn baby.....give me more info on the whole accupunture thing.....I would be interested!

If it helps Roksana. jake was pressenting perfectly up until about the day before he was born when he decided to turn and face the other way, and present me with the LARGEST PART OF HIS HEAD!!!!!!   lovely child. So babies can turn..hope yours does!! good luck.

roksana - any good accupunturist should know about pregancy and turning breeches etc - maybe the one your hubby goes to? Its really worth it - although it can get expensive to go regularly. Ring and talk to a couple. position wise to turn babes is head down bum up. That is on your hands and knees, put your head down so it is lower than your bum (lean on yr elbows)it is more comfortable to do this on your bed or somewhere soft!! With first babies they dont normally worry about positions til about 34wks - with 1st babies your muscles are that much tighter that babes are less likely to turn after 34wks than in woman like me who have no muscle tone!!! hope this helps!

Posted By: Roksana
Date Posted: 30 August 2005 at 3:00pm
Thanks Nadine...I will try the hand and knees thing for the next three weeks if it does not work I might go for the accupunture option. If the guy who does hubby's accupunture knows how to do this then it will be good, as he is a mate and does not charge us any thing.....

ooooh i know, and the interest... something like $25,0000 in a week, geez that's our whole year's income... in A WEEK!!!    it would set us up as well as our families for life.   the kids wouldn't be spoilt... but it would be nice not to have to go into shops to buy them stuff and look at the price tags before deciding if i like it or not.
