Things are going good...Isabella is sleeping about 2-4 hours at a time which is not too bad I suppose and she settles straight away so I'm very lucky, she definitely isn't a grizzly bubs (or not yet anyway )
Only prob I'm having is with my poor nipples! She fed so much in the first 2 days they got really grazed and now my left nipple is REALLY bad . I am having to express from my left breast and use a shield on the right while I wait for them to heal a bit. Other than that, Isabella is a great feeder, she can't seem to get enough!
Still a bit uncomfortable from c-sec but definitely not as bad as I thought I'd be

But dont give up,wich is what a lot of people seem to do!

I'm finally here! Been having a few issues with my account but it's all sorted now :)
I'm finding that my nipples are really painful as well, cracked and grazed. But things are starting to come together with feeding, and everything else is just fantastic, he's the easiest baby ever and we're having so much fun with him!

Glad you are recovering well from your section Shell
I would of died if i didnt have the "mothers mates" gel pads for my nipples on the second day of feeding. They are great for relieving the soreness & helping to heal the grazes, cracks, scabs etc!!! But yea, i cant talk, i could only did it for just over a week (Im deformed)

Sucks about the nipples though. I can't imagine what that feels like. I think I'm a freak who has had no issues with mine at all. Hope they all heal up soon!

Yup, its all good now in the BF department, they are healing nicely, have been using shields and lansinoh ointment (which is fantastic stuff!) and I think I'll be able to do away with the shield soon. I'm so relieved because I just love feeding her, having that contact, and she feeds great so I'm very lucky!
What I want to know is when does the 'jelly belly' go down??!! I suppose having a caesar doesn't help things...

With my first c-sec it took a few months to get back to my pre preg clothes etc, but still had an overhang/pouch jelly thing just above my pubic line- which i dont think i'll ever get rid of This time round, im all but back to pre Kalyx size. This is the worst part of c-sec's, getting all your tummy muscles cut & them never healing like the were before

But I've heard Kyla a few other times & it's a very nice name.

Aghhhhhhh, I had such a bad sleep last night...I think Bella is going through a growth spurt because all she wanted to do yesterday was feed, feed, feed constantly. She finally slept for about 4 hours in the afternoon but when we tried to put her down for the night, she wasn't having any of it...finally got her down at 12.30 in the morning but she kept waking every 2 hours for another feed! It seems she has her day/night round the wrong way - how do you rectify this...??!

Thought I'd post my birth story (Bella's asleep so I've got the time!)...
23rd July - At 12 days overdue, went to hospital to discuss induction where they found that baby was not engaged at all and cervix was only 'mildly' ripe but I asked to be induced as I was so uncomfortable at this stage (doc and MW wanted me to wait another few days - yeah right!). Was admitted at 8pm and first dose of gel inserted at 8.30pm. Started having mild contractions by 10pm but managed to get some rest during the night.
24th July - Contractions continued through the night, they were irregular (2-3 contractions every 10 mins) but gaining in intensity...given another lot of gel at 8am where OB also discovered baby had turned posterior (go figure on top of everything else!) I was made to walk around the ward to try and move baby's head down as she was still very high and started to feel pain in my back.
At around 12pm given third and final dose of gel which REALLY got things moving and I was having to really concentrate on each contraction. At this point I got moved to birthing room and got in the bath; contractions were 1-2 every 3 minutes and by 3pm contractions were 1 every 2 minutes. I was starting to feel really sick by this point and had about 3 huge vomits while in the bath .
At 5pm got checked again by OB and found I was only 4 cm dilated!! (after all those painful and VERY strong contractions). Baby STILL hadn't moved down so OB performed a 'controlled' rupture of membranes which I remember as being VERY painful as he broke my waters and his house surgeon pressed on my stomach to avoid a prolapse of the cord. OUCH! Baby moved down a little after this but the contractions were literally unbearable at this point. MW made me walk down the corridor to try and move the head down further before I got back in the bath and bounced on the swiss ball (to encourage baby down more) while sucking on the gas like there was no tomorrow! At this point I'd had enough and begged for an epidural. Was 8cm dilated at this point.
Finally got given an epidural around 7pm which didn't work and began to feel the contractions get stronger and stronger despite 3 top ups of pain medication. At 8pm still had a posterior lip and was fully dilated and baby started going into stress with decelerations of her heart beat. OB was called from home to check me and discovered baby was not moving down and with each contraction her head was banging my pelvis and bruising my bladder...decided at 9pm that I needed an emergency c-section for obstructed labour.
What followed happened really quickly, met anaethetist (who had to be called in from home too) who gave me the good drugs and yay, I finally couldn't feel anything! OB explained everything and I was quickly carted off to theatre where Isabella Jane was born at 1005pm weighing no less than 9lbs 2.5oz!!

I can't seem to make the ticker work. Blame it on sleep deprivation and guilt.
Our little girl is 13 days old and I'm so over the breastfeeding and subsequent not sleeping. Last night I was so exhausted from her not feeding and not sleeping that I let her cry alot. She's awake for about 4/5 hours at a time - she feeds I put her down in her bassinet when she's 'asleep' and she wakes again. We seem to do this a number of times.
I changed her, fed from 10:30pm to 12:30am, burping her as we went, put her down and she didn't go to sleep. And then I let her cry until 2:30am where she fed off me for 10 minutes! then went to sleep, I put her down again after waiting 10 minutes to see if she needed anything. She woke and continued to cry. I changed her, put her down and I'm ashamed to say that I let her cry for the rest of the night until I was ready to 'wake' her at 8:30.
A very long horrid night for both of us. I feel like I am the worst mum ever.

Hi
You're so right Shell21, I think that this is what our little girl has been doing.
Things have improved with cathy. After her truly rotten night when she wouldn't feed much or sleep (at all) we had the dream day yesterday, where she didn't muck around feeding or sleeping. In fact she slept between 4 and 5 hours yesterday, last night and today. I am wakeful from just looking in on her so much (can't believe my eyes and ears!).
Left booby is sore from all the ferocious feeding that has been going on since our horrible night. This is probably what she should have been feeding like all along but was so busy mucking around that my boobs just got used to being 'toyed' with.
The little girl does have a small case of nappy rash that resulted from me being exhausted and letting her cry that night. Double the guilt. My LMC comes tomorrow and I will ask her to assess what type of nappy rash that it is.
I hadn't been using any type of barrier cream (didn't know that i should have been doing this). I'm such a novice at all this.
Her spots are on her left bum cheek, red, raised, and one of them has a white head - i'm guessing that it might be the thrush type of nappy rash, but am unsure.
What type of barrier creams are people using? Do you use it every nappy change?
What cream/ointment are you using for thrush type nappy rash?

Glad to hear things are improving for you Rackhell . Yes, my poor boobies got a bit sore after Isabella's feeding frenzy too and they became so engorged with milk I had to wear my bra at night and then they leaked like crazy every time she cried . Glad I was at home!
Isabella got a bit of nappy rash too last week. My MW said to stay away from nappy wipes and just use a facecloth and water which I have been doing and to apply Sudocrem after each nappy change and this seems to be working - she only has a few raised spots left after about 4 days of doing this. You can buy Sudocrem at the chemist and you get a big tub for about $12.
Don't worry - I am a complete novice too and sort of just 'feeling' my way around how I'm supposed to be doing things . Its a sort of learn-as-you-go job me thinks !
Hope that helps a little...

on the topic of creams, our antenatal class teacher mentioned somthing you can get on prescription (ie cheap and heapsof it) with zinc in it. Unfortunately the zinc part is the only thing I can remember. It is meant to be the same kind of thing our mums would have used on our bots...apart from some being bigger than we want I think they turned out ok

Sorry lurking..
You guys are doing a marvelous job! I had all the same kinda things with Sam, the crying and not sleeping and all of that when he was a week or so old and I know 6 weeks seems a long way away, but when they hit 6 weeks, they are just so awesome and even from 4 weeks onwards you will start to notice a difference. The first couple of weeks are so tough but you get through them and you don't even remember the tiring times.
Sam had a wee bit of nappy rash when he was a newborn, and I used the Sudocrem that you get in the Bounty Pack. It's only a small tub, but it lasts for ages.
Good luck ladies.

Thanks Renee! It is tiring but I'm so enjoying my little girl, despite the bad patches! But, yeah, I can't wait till she hits some of those milestones like smiling and showing her wee personality!

im not sure if iv posted in here before but here i am
Astin is settling into a great routine now after a horid first few weeks!!! (i so know what ya mean rackhell!!!) my supply was increasing but then his demand was increasing more than i could keep up hense why i now give him topups and will probably have to until he starts solids where he will just need the solids and B/milk iv tried giving him just formula for 1 feed to see how much he took and he guzzled back 270mls! within half hour and then was happy as larry! i can tell when he starts getting full cos he starts making this cute little wimpering sound like "heh heh heh" ! lol so that is why i cant keep up!
during the day he does 3-4 hours sleeps between feeds and at night i feed him at 10pm then he wakes at 3am and then again at 8am so hes doing good with the night time, i just need to make sure that i feed him no earlier than 9.30pm otherwise hes up at 1am, 3.30am and 6.30am! i also find doing that baby bedtime routine works great!
my only prob now is that Astin is suddenly only going poos once every 2 days and in the hours leading up to that poo he is so upset!, he use to go every time he fed!!, i hope hes not a problem pooer like Bay!
We have our first plunket appointment on wednesday which im looking forward to, we are going over to Tauranga (where we use to live) to see Bays plunket nurse as the plunket here are soooooooo slack! but it works out good cos Bay has his 3.5 yr check up at the same time plus we are going to visit a few friends over there and also go get some professional family photos done of the 4 of us so we are making a day of it.
WOW! you can tell i dont get on here much now!! Blabbablabablaba! lol if anyone is even still reading this mumble! lol

i found bethapen works wonders on nappy rash clears up haleighs in a day or 2, we only ever got to the thrush like rash once and used the antibacterial i think it is in the bethapen, my mum used it on me when i was a baby which is why i used it.
sounds like a growth spur to me to, haleighs was horrible i was feeding every hr & i couldnt bfeed so i was expressing i spent all my time firmly attatched to the pump, we were lucky james never went through that couldve been cause he was formula fed.
things get easier once bubs settles into its own routine, time flies so incredibly fast, it feels like only yesterday i had Haleigh & shes nearly 2

Thank you ladies for the support and encouragement.
My LMC checked out Cathys nappy rash, and it's not the thrush variety which is great to know at this stage. We had been given some Karitane ointment for nappy rash so have been using that in the meantime. It seems slow to work, but then again Cathy hasn't been upset when she's gone for a wee, so it's okay. Mind you I have some bethapen should things not clear up soon.
My LMC also said that she could have had a reaction to the type of wipe that i had just started using. We had been using Pams (the pink ones with the pop up lid - so handy!) and ran out, then used something called Pharmacy First Wipes which are not as thick and soft as the pams ones. So I've stopped using these and are now alternating between a new lot of pams and johnsons disposable liners and water to clean her botty.
I guess it's all trial and error, isn't it. Today she spent almost two hours awake feeding (about 40 mins each boob), changing and a bit of kicking around. The upside is that she does tend to sleep for 3 hours at a stretch allowing me to usually go for a sleep (although ohbaby eats into this considerably!)
Cath is feeding a lot better, although today she projectile milked me. A friend has given me a 'mothers mate' from www.mummymatters.co.nz (a gel breast pad) to play with to help soothe my boobs (big nipple + little girl mouth = sore booby) and it does soothe it until the next time the little girl has a go.
I've tried to use my breast pump to express off some milk when I get too engorged but i must not have been thinking hard enough about Cath as not a drop came out.
So pleased i have you ladies to talk about things with.
How long is your baby awake for?
...
Cathy 16 days and counting

Astin is starting to be awake more as time goes by. At first he was never awake! he fed and then straight back to sleep! but now he stays awake most feed (during the day cos at night he goes straight back to sleep) for about an hourish! hes soooooo nosey! and loves just looking around the room! and our calico curtains are his best friend! lol he thinks they are halerious!?

Isabella is going through ANOTHER growth spurt (I think) and has transformed from being a perfect angel to a little horror in 24 hours...feed, feed, feed ALL night last night and screaming in between the not feeding...not fun! I hate to admit it, but I got so desperate last night I topped her up with some formula otherwise I don't think I would have got ANY sleep. Gave her 100mls in total which finally got her to sleep and she was down for 5 hours! I feel a bit guilty because I really am trying to stick to breastmilk and breastmilk only but sometimes I think Mum's sanity is just as important!
And I'm so tired today my brain is really not working. Just went to the shops and managed to forget my bag with EVERYTHING in it - I remembered when I got to the end of the road (and luckily DH was home to let me in the house! ) What a ditz!

We had our first outing today up to the mall to do some shopping - DH, Jaymie and I. It was GREAT to get out and Jaymie was an angel. All is well here, so far so good. Midwife coming tomorrow to take out my c-section staples and weigh Jaymie, and then we are going to Takapuna to the Farmers cardholder sale and then to visit Nana and Grandpa.
Jaymie is being good so far, on a four hour feeding schedule. I will be looking out for that two week growth spurt though!

rackhell - Im so pleased you are getting some ideas from in here....
we used johnsons and a natural baby type raah cream on ella....and when she starts to get a little red around butt hole i use the lightest baby lotion which seems to stop the burn...make sure if you do this you also put it up her butt crack up her back as sometimes those poops burn up there! sad but true!
Glad cathy is letting you get some sleep...she sounds like a pretty normal bubba and you are doing so well....
BTW I bought her a cute outfit at t and t sale today to add to the ozzie parcel i havent sent yet!!! yipppeee another bubba to spoil!!

Geez lulu, you have a 4 hour feeding routine? man that's amazing. I hope that Jaymie keeps it up.
Shell21, I'm gonna reiterate what you pretty much told me - hang in there this too will pass. You are doing one of the most amazingly difficult jobs that there is to do, and I know you're doing a good job.
Don't feel guilty about using formula, it's more important that you are sane and happy(ish) than worrying about the breastfeeding police and you're right the crying does seem to indicate that anohter growth spurt is upon you. Sleeping is a necessity for both you and baby and if a little formula gets the job done ...
LAO forgetting your purse though! I almost can't remember what i was doing an hour ago, so I can't talk at all.
Cathy is screaming in her bassinet, clean and cuddled, fed, butt is creamed and changed, and she's still going - i'm trying to not let her crying affect me too much (thinking those horrible thoughts of 'if i've done my job properly she would be asleep' and 'how come after 17 days i still can't interpret what each cry means!'). She knocked off the crying after 20 mins but she's wide awake. oh dear.
I still haven't been out of the house (apart from walking around the block with her) by myself with Cath. It takes DH and myself working together in order to get out of the house at the moment. I don't seem to have enough time in the day to fit this in, along with breastfeeding/sleeping committments.
I have no idea how other people manage to get up and be organised enough to go someplace.

Thanks Rackhell...Yeah its hard work when Bella screams all day and I'm at my wits end. We had a better night last night, sticking to the 4 hourly routine again, but I'm still knackered and would love to put my head down again but Bella wouldn't go down after her last feed and is wide-eyed and awake in her bassinet! I'm hoping she'll drop off, but so far no joy!
Getting out of the house is good if you can do it, because Bella sleeps the whole time because of the rocking of the stroller which is great, and we both get some fresh air. When DH and I go to his parents for afternoon tea it takes us about an hour to get all the stuff together that we need and get in the car and go!

Wow it feels strange moving to this post..
Not as strange as it feels hearing noise from in the bassinet thats been empty for so long..
This breastfeeding is going to be the most challenging, as well as sleeping as both me and DF are worried somethings gunna happen..

NZPIPER are you waiting for next WED??? LOL.....I was suprised to see you still in here waiting....
**LABOUR VIBES LABOUR VIBES**
Rach (and others?) - have you tried putting Catherine in a bouncer? Ella would often go off to sleep in hers as it vibrated (and rocked but she doesnt like rocking)...if you dont have one i highly recommend a trip Kmart (best range) and get one that vibrates at least!!! She can still see you,is comfy (we put blanket over Ella while she was in it) and is a change from basinette.

Shell21 Funnily enough our little girl doesn't really like the pram at the moment. We have 2 prams. A big old clunky one that you have to wrestle to put up or down and one of those snap and gos (a lightweight wheeled frame that a car seat can slot into)that was hired along with the car seat for the first six months. She doesn't like either very much so we're not doing much walking at the moment. When i want to walk and the weather cooperates she's deep in a sleep cycle and man does she get cranky if you move her!
DH has two days off and yesterday we went to see my parents in RotoVegas (1 1/2 hours away) and she loved being in it and slept the entire way there and back again. Amazing.
Cath still has nappy rash. How long is nappy rash supposed to last? We're doing her butt every nappy change and still no big improvement. I'll get the midwife to look at it again today.
Welcome LilAngel4Me. Breastfeeding I think is the hardest thing to sort initially, and it only really works if you're rested as well. Hope DF is keen and comfortable with nappy changing, bathing, rocking, pillow arranging, feeding you etc (which all helps). The hardest days for me were the first week that we took our little one home - so tiring and frustrating. I spent every day in tears and didn't really come out the other side until about 4 days ago.
Hang in there nzpiper!

no Bombshell I am not waiting till next WED...although that is my next appt with the MW and OB incase I need inducing. If I wasnt so goddamn sick right now I would have hopefully had the baby by now!!!
I think I need to be careful what I wish for as I had always joked that I wanted to cough and there was the baby.....well I spent ALL night coughing and now there is so much pressure in my pelvis it is either more baby or I'm about to cough myself inside out

Bella LOVES rocking...it seems to be the only way to get her to sleep during the day. Yesterday she didn't sleep much from 8am till 5pm, when we went out for tea and put her in the stroller and the 'rock, rock, rock' of the stroller sent her off to the land of the nod for a good 2 hours! I find myself having to 'rock' her bassinet just to get her to drift off!

oh yeah the motion of the car and strollers are great too...I dont count those as rocking for Ella tho. BUt we did spend a lot of time at malls in those early weeks = she loved sound and moving around in the stroller and would sleep for hours if we were out - BUT NOT AT HOME!!!!
God ive got to stop reading this thread - all the bad first six week memories are flooding back LOL!!!

Well our first night home went ok i thought.. im a little tired but to be expected.
She woke maybe every three hours for a feed, but she seems to only feed from one side? i dont have any luck with the other side? My nipples aren't cracked or bleeding they just hurt, is that because i need to get used to it?
DF let me sleep this morning which was nice so i didnt get up untill half ten when she needed to feed again..
He cleaned the whole house and brought me in breakfast at our 6am feed.
He is so sweet he almost cries when he holds her he thinks shes so precious.. Im so happy with the way things have turned out..
Well im off to write my birth story so will post it shortly.
Man the bounty pack is good you get heaps of coupons for free photos :) And that sudocream i think im going to buy some of that..
Ohwe gave her a bath last night.. (well tried) And she really hated it she screamed and screamed is that normal?
Also another thing, my lower ab. is sometimes REALLY sore like im curled up in feotel(sp) position as it hurts so much? Its after i pee..
