Your DH / DP will love you for making this. I just tried tonight and it is soooooooo yum!! I served it on mashed potato and placed a circle of puff pastry on the top. It's a crock pot recipe.

1Kg stewing beef cubed
2 onions quatered
2 med potatoes cubed
1 small kumara cubed
1/4 cup plain flour seasoned with salt and pepper
330mls beer (any type, I used export)
1 cup hot water
2 tsp beef stock powder
1 tbls balsamic vinegar
1 tbls brown sugar
1tsp dried thyme
1 bay leaf

Brown onions in a pan and when done place in crockpot. Put seasoned flour into a plastic bag, add the cubed meat and toss well to coat the meat in flour.
Brown meat in a little oil in the frying pan. Add browned meat + potatoes + kumara into the cooker.
Mix together water, stock, beer, brown sugar, balsamic vinegar & bay leaf and add to crock pot.
Cook on high for about 8 hours or on low for 6 or 7.

I served it on mashed potatoes and topped it with a cirlce of puff pastry.   I also sliced some mushrooms and cooked them in the microwave for 5 mins in some of the sauce from the casserole....yum!

Now off to eat the homemade peach crumble pie I made today...
