Topic: Question about hummus... Posted: 13 October 2009 at 6:53pm |
Does anyone know why the NZ food safety authority say to avoid eating hummus during pregnancy? Is it something to do with the hygiene of bought hummus? Can i still make my own at home? Can I still eat chickpeas?
Help! I'm having major hummus cravings......

I think it is the tahini I remember someone saying.
Make you own then you know what is in it.

Hey Sarah - I wish I could remember which page but the may forum had a huge discussion about food, in particular hummus, just the other day. If you don't get the answers you're looking for here, maybe poke your head in there and ask the question and I'm sure someone will be able to tell you!
Personally I don't see any prob with it as long as I eat it freshly made or freshly opened. I know I def ate it with Bethany cuz being dairy/gluten intolerant myself, it's one of the few 'dips' I can have. Hope that helps?

Aw man now I REALLY want hummus...
I've never heard of it being unsafe before, maybe just do some googling and see what comes up?

It is the tahini that you're not supposed to have (don't ask me why). I ate it anyway. But if you are worried about it I would just make some at home without tahini

Exactly the reason I eat it - its hard to find anything tasty & with carbs to keep me going, but not too stodgy like most GF things.
I looked up the ingredients in tahini, it just seems to be sesame seeds so can't work out the problem there......I'll have a dig around and see if I can find that old thread- thanks

I don't see why tahini would be a problem as it is just sesame seeds and olive oil. I eat hummus all the time and have had no problems..
As with everything i just make sure it's freshly opened. Open it and eat the whole thing haha.
Personally i think they go way over the top with those food guidelines. Another thing for mothers to feel guilty about. Confession - i eat blue cheese and brie and, shock horror call cyfs, drink the odd glass of wine.

I ate it, but only when it was freshly opened. If it didnt all get eaten i wouldnt eat from it again and DH would finish it off over the next couple of days.
It is because of the tahini, something about the way its made.. l like not being able to eat sushi because of the rice....
Home made hummus is nicer anyway and way cheaper.
You are fine to eat chickpeas

My MW said we're told to avoid most foods because theres so many different ways to prepare food, some people aren't as "safe" when they prepare foods, etc and also some foods don't have set standards for preparing them. It's a shame if you can't eat it...
Re the sushi thing above, MW said to me I could have it so long as it's just been freshly prepared and as long as it's only the vegeterian kind.

there was a listeria scare a few years ago with tahini, which is why its off the list now.
I don't make my own anymore (cos i'm not sure about the tahini i buy) but I eat the store bought stuff freshly opened.

I eat it if I buy it from a good maker (something like Lisa's) and only if its freshly opened.
PS. You can make hummus without using tahini, I've never made it with tahini and it tastes just as good

I eat hummus too but only on the day of opening it. Just be careful when preparing it too and you should be fine

If it looks dodgy (sp?) or not quite right or smells weird then I don't eat it. I just eat what I am comfortable eating. Except with meat lol

Hi, we had this discussion in our forum (due April 2010)... I bought it up cause I had no idea I wasnt supposed to be eating it and I was shocked and wondered why. I googled it and it did have something to do with the tahini and in the way in which is is prepared. You would think however that brands like Lisas would be safe! I agree now if you have it the day its opened then it will be fine, however, bit of a pain as I was having it daily on sandwiches to tart them up a bit! Not going to be buying a tub of it each blimmen day! Home made is great, if you have a food processor that is!

It's easy to make your own tahini. Just lightly roast the sesame seeds in a dry frypan, don't let them go brown. Then let them cool and process in the food processor with olive oil till you get the right consistency. It stores in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 3 months. And since you've made it yourself you know what food prep hygiene went into it.
I used to make it and then use it to make hummus and felafels but i can never get my hummus tasting that good so gave up after about a million tries. And got sick of my felafels falling apart so gave up the whole meal altogether but now strangely am getting a bit of a craving!

The tahini thing is (and correct me if I'm wrong here, but there was a thread about it a while ago), that the seeds are basically soaked when they're sitting for so long, and bacteria forms easily on things like that. Just like how sushi (regardless of whether its got meat in it or not) is a no-no because the rice harbours bacteria the same way.
Hope that helps (and btw I ate sushi and hummus while pg - I was rather relaxed this time around)

There is a recipie out there which uses yoghurt instead of tahini, and is quite yummy, added calcium without the risk? Suggest eating it straight away though.
There are loads of different flavours you can make at home, such as beetroot, aubigiene and pumpkin, which have a similar texture, adds a bit of variety and more veges to the diet. Just use chickpeas as the base.

•1 15 oz can of chickpeas or garbanzo beans, drained (save liquid)
•1-2 cloves garlic, crushed
•1 tablespoon lemon juice
•1/2 cup plain yogurt
•1 teaspoon salt
Preparation:
In a food processor combine beans, yogurt, garlic, and lemon juice. Blend well. Add salt and cumin and blend to a smooth and creamy dip.
If you hummus is too thick, add a little bit of the liquid from the chickpeas - about a teaspoon at time. Other ways to thin out hummus is by using warm water or olive oil also.
