Hey all
Just wondering any tips on reducing stretch marks, I'm still in early days and not showing, but I have heard Bio Oil is meant to be good and to use it from the beginning? Can anyone concur with that (via experience or know someone else it worked for?) or other recommendations?

i used bio oil from the start and have some nasty stretchmarks but they are fading really fast and after my first pregnancy they were silver within months. i wasnt totally religious with it and it may just be different types of skin react different but i reckon it made a difference. it also helped reduce the itching caused by the skin stretching too

I think its more to do with genes and your skin type to if you get them not the amount of product you put on them. Some can put nothing and get none and some can put every remedy under the sun on religiously and end up with tons.

I used it and I don't think it made a difference. I still looked like a tiger belly.

Good to know, yeah sometimes you wonder with these products if it's all a big thing just to get you to spend money on something that doesn't really work!

You can't do anything other than keeping hydrated and keeping your skin moisturised. This will keep your skin supple.
But if you are going to get stretch marks, you are going to get them. It is definitely hereditary. Look at your Mum - has she got many?
And just about everyone gets at least one or two (or heaps!), so don't worry about them!

If there was a product that actually worked then all women would know about it!

I also found bio oil nice for itching - but baby oil did the same thing and was heaps cheaper!

I didn't get any stretchmarks until about 37 weeks...just to let you know as until that point I thought that I had gotten away with it!

I started taking Bio OIl from day one... to be honest I have been told its just to do with your skin.. how much elastin you have etc.. and genes.. how your mums skin was in pregnancy is a good indicator.
I dont have a single stretch mark... I'm almost 37 weeks! It certainly has helped with the dry skin etc I have had on my belly.... and I like to think it has helped with avoiding the stretch marks... there are often specials on at life pharmacy... for $40 you get a large and a smaller one.. saving $13 or something.
I use that and the nivea cocoa butter lotion that is new- as it smells yummy!! one in the morning- the other at night. Doing this will certainly give you the best chance.. at least you will know you tried everything! drink heaps of water also to keep skin hydrated... thats key too!

Well... not sure how well BioOil prevents/reduces stretchmarks, but it definately helps scarring... so if it doesn't prevent them, keep using it afterwards!
I had a really dark scar on my chin from chicken pox when I was 6 and BioOil got rid of it completely and also some other chicken pox scars from my arms and hands ...yes I was a scratcher!

Ive heard so many times that if your mum has had them then you will too, my mum has none after 4 kids and I had hideous ones from my first! talk about feeling ripped off , I think its down to skin type rather, mine has always been dry. They did fade but still didn't look too great, I did wonder if bio oil helped in the fading of them afterwards though, but didn't buy another lot to test that out

Maybe you got your Dad's skin? I know I take after my Dad in almost everything, hair, eyes and height etc. so I would more look to him to see how my skin might react to something. But then I've never met the guy, so that's a bit hard

Like most of the other ladies have mentioned, there is not too much that you can do to stop them, if your prone to getting them... eg genes....

But I work for a skin treatments company, and can tell you that the ingredient that you need to help heal stretch marks is called centella asiatica.... and Bio oil has very small amount of that. If you are wanting something that takes out the purple colour and makes them flat really quickly you need a product that has high amounts of that ingredient....

Hope that helps!!

Hey that's awesome to know Mealza! Could be worth looking for something in the shops or on the net. Am thinking I will get some bio oil even if it ends up helping with the itching if I get some, then that will be a good thing!

Olive Oil, I found, is more effective than Bio Oil, faaaaaarrrr cheaper and contains no chemicals that may harm baby

Also I was told by a pregnancy massage therapist to only ever massage your tummy clockwise (from your right to left) as it follows the flow of blood, has calming effects for baby and also encourages baby to stay in the right spot.

And yes....I'm a hippy. LOL

What i was told it to eat really well and keep really hydrated as that keeps the elastin in your skin which is the key, i use the cocoa butter lotion from vasaline which i love, only use it once a day at night before i jump into bed as your body does most of its repair when your asleep...however only really started this at third trimester (28weeks)...no stretchies so far on my belly, only time will tell.

and also emu oil is a scar remover practically, amazing stuff! its used on surgical patients afterwards to reduce and sometimes get rid of the scar tissue, ill be using it after birth.

Hope I don't put you in a position to name drop, but are there any brands that you can recommend?

I'm left-handed!! I always rub my belly with my left hand from left to right!

I used Bio Oil religiously from the minute I found out I was preg and 4 wks,,,, also slathered on Palmers Stretch mark cream twice a day.... I went stretch mark free up until 40wks.... but little Isla was 2wks late and that's when I got the stretchies! Lots of the nasty buggers too! My belly looked like a tiger. A few months after giving birth I decided to try something different cause Bio Oil was doing NOTHING! So I tried a similar product... Dr Lewinns Medic Range - Bio Care Oil. It has been great! My stretch marks are still visible but aren't that horrible dark red/purple colour anymore. They are now a silvery pink and no where near as noticeable as they had been. Would definitely recommend it! It can be used on dry skin etc too... my sister uses it on both her kids (aged 4 and 6) who both get very bad eczema (sp?)
As for it being in the genes.. I thought I'd be blessed and not get any stretchmarks cause my mum had 6 kids and didn't get a single stretch mark and my sister never got any with either of her kids and they were quite big babies considering she is only 5"2. I guess I was just unlucky!
