    Posted: 30 September 2008 at 9:47am

Last night , after having the *worst* ms day so far - lots of vomiting and feeling like utter crap-I went to the loo and you know how about this stage of pg we are prob all experiencing a little more, errm 'discharge' down there? ...wellI was kinda feeling that before I went to the loo but anyway when I got there I was horrified to see that this time instead of being a cremay colour, it was tinged with brown!  Not brown blood...it was mixed in with my cm (sorry tmi) and only a little on my panties and then a little when I wiped. No cramping oranything then or since. Just the usual twnges I get every now and then.

I called my MW and she said it could be ominous or it could be nothing and is sending out fastpost a couple of HCG forms and a referral fr a scan next week when I"ll be about 9weeks along for 'reassurance'.

I had a scan last Friday at 7 weeks and we had a nice strong heartbeat so I guess that is a good sign?

I've been checking myself frequently since last night and there's been no more spotting either on my panties or when I wipe (sorry tmi), although I still have the usual cm which seems to be gettinga little creamier and slightly heavier- although no smell or anything (sorry- so embarassing!)

My questions are- is it normal to spot briefly around this time of pg? And why? DP and I haven't had special cuddles since I found out I was pg, so it's not that. I guess if I wasn't pg, my period would've been due around this time, give a day or so...could that be it?

Or is this a likely sign of an impending missed mc or a 'regular' mc?  I'm paranoid after last time and the bloody time before that too! I thought once we had a heartbeat it as more likely than not that this pg would be fine.....

Also, this morning I'm feeling quite a bit better ms wise- still nauseous but was able to eat my toast without spewing (although had a couple of retches during it yuck)...and now I think my bbs feel less sore too! And I'm focusing all my attention on the twinges in my lower abs...although they're absolutely not cramps and certainly nothing like mc cramps. Just occasionally and prob no more than normal I guess lol

Any advice? I'm resting up today adn will just wait for the forms from my MW but I guess I just wanted to know if this is likely the end of this pg or just something that happens sometimes?

TIA

it must be stressful for you!   but i know alot of ladies here have had alot of bleeding early in pregnancy (and some right the way through) and have gone on to have healthy babies

try not to stress, as hard as that is. spotting can be completely normal, but don't ask me why it happens.

and congrats hun!

Emmecat, no answers, but big hugs... and fingers crossed. As you might remember I had a bit of brown discharge at 5 weeks, but at 6 weeks 2 days saw the heart beat...

Rest up! I'll be thinking of you.

Surfergirl- yes I was thinking there was another May mummy who had had some spotting/brown discharge...but couldn't remember who! I think we're about the same EDD too as at the last scan the sonographer told me I was due 11 May instead of 15 for some reason?!

Yeah Emmecat, we're very close edd - I'm now 10th May, so fingers crossed, like me, you're just beginning to feel 'better' and that the brown discharge means nothing. God, I lay in bed and cried all day I had it, so I know how you feel. Hope you have a good book or movie to distract you!

My MC had quite heavy bleeding right from the start with cramps that felt like terrible painful gas.

Plenty of women I know have had some kind of spotting at some point in their pgcies. It may be the start of something not nice i'm sorry to say but at the same time, it's not abnormal to spot. Hopefully your HCG levels come out ok. Have you thought about stomping your feet to get another scan? That's what I did when I was having early pains with this pgcy and I just couldn't wait for blood results as I was too stressed about loosing another one.

All the best chick.

Hey there.....Spotting is sooo narmal these days its scary.

I had light bleeding (yes red blood) with DD at 8 and 10 weeks....then a flood of red blood at 18 weeks and I thought for sure I have lost my baby...but no she is a nearly 3 year old bossy little thing running around.

With this one I had brownish discharge at 5 weeks and that carried on till like 9 weeks I think. And I have a very wriggly bub in there at the mo.

I know its hard not to stress and trust me I stressed when I saw discharge this time, even tho I had been thru worse with DD.....How ever try and relax as much as possible....Unless cramping starts you are all good. They say seeing a strong hear beat at 7-8 weeks drops the MC chances to like 5%.

Congrats!!! and stick baby stick!

I had a very similiar thing happen when I was pg with Jett.  At around 6 weeks.  I had no pains or anything though, and it only happened once.  It freaked the hell outta me though!  Never had any brown or red discharge with my previous pregnancies.  I then had a tiny bleed at 15 weeks.  At my 20 week scan it showed my placenta was low lying (placenta previa).  So that could've been the cause of the brown discharge.

If you had special cuddles recently that may have caused the brown discharge.

My babies:

R (9),G (7), J (5)

Hi Emmecat!

I had spotting around 9weeks and it lasted for about 5 days! It sounded about the same as yours w/colour ect.

Everything is fine with me, so try to relax and not stress about it, it's very hard to do, but I think if your in a panic, it makes the whole situation much worse on you and baby..

Let us know!!

Hi Emmecat. Harmless spotting/bleeding in early preg is not uncommon, so I found out when it happened to me. Right from the day my AF was due, I had pink/brown spotting, which gradually turned into red blood by 8 weeks (had cramps too). Right up until 14 weeks I had regular period-like bleeding every few days with the spotting in between, and huge gushes at 9 weeks and 16 weeks - so many times thought I was going to mc. But lots and lots of hcg tests, scans and hosp visits showed bubs was fine and not troubled by it at all! As you can see from my ticker everything turned out okay. Apparently it happens a lot and no one knows why. My GP's theory is that the bleeding comes from the cervix, not the uterus, and perhaps when the muscle relaxing hormone is released during pregnancy it relaxes and softens your cervix so much that when things are stretching your cervix is a bit too sensitive and the blood vessels burst, probably causing the spotting/bleeding. One of the ladies from my work had bleeding right throughout her first preg and her bub was fine. She was a great support when it was happening to me! If there is anyone from your workplace, circle of friends, family who had it happen to them that you could talk to about it as it can really help - of course there are always the forums too I'm sure everything will be fine Emmecat and I'm sending positive thoughts your way.....

*purple positive fuzzy vibes* chin up chicka, as you can see it's normal and everything is good, bubs is fine and it's heart is beating nice and strong. Worry is all part of it and just shows how much of a caring mother you are.

I had the same thing too, I think at about 5wks and it lasted for nearly 2wks then it started again at about 8wks for about another week. Was totally freaky since I've had miscarriages before I was sure it was happening again. I had a scan at 6wk2d which showed a good strong heartbeat which was reassuring but didn't really stop me worrying. I also did get a lot of reassurance from here, its amazing how common it seems to be. I was told it was from the implantation, just bubs burying in nice and deep. All you can really do is ride it out and hope for the best, hard to do I know.

Emmecat...sounds totally normal!  They say you can often get spotting around the time your AF is due..god knows why but that is what they say.  Brown is meant to be fine and the fact that it is little is good too.  But it does scare the crap out of you.  I guarantee you will be checking your undies until the day bubs is born....and then some

With my first pg I brownish spotting from about 6weeks then really heavy bright red bleeding at 7weeks 4days and I was sure it was a mc despite no pain but after 2days it went away completely now I have a very energetic 5yr old!

I have had browish and red "spotting"(I only notice it when I wipe mostly) on and off through my 2nd pgy and this pgy and everything has gone well.

I know how you must be feeling, after having 5 mc's myself I found every little cramp or stretch as well as any slight change in discharge made me almost expect another mc. It's a nerve racking time(the 1st 12weeks) but the best thing you can do is rest and look after yourself.

Trudandem's post sounds right to me. The cervix is a funny thing.

I know it's way different but I've had preventative treatment for cervical cancer (pre cancerous Lletz) and the slightest thing causes me to bleed on and off for up to a month. Even a smear sets me off so perhaps this GP's theory of the cervix being effected could quite possibly be true.

Hi ladies

Thank you all for your replies, I've been feeling rubbish all day (probably ms still!) and although I'm trying not to worry am already feeling that maybe this pg is ending

I had some more spotting around lunchtime- visable when I wiped only but again looked like it was *in* my CM...rather than brown blood IYKWIM?!  No cramps but I'm certainly feeling every twinge and full feeling in my tummy now! Talk about paranoid lol

It is about the time my period would've been due....I guess I'm just worried that perhaps it's the start of a mc or a missed mc. Sigh.

Chin up chick, I had the impending doom feeling with this one and we are still ticking along (touch wood).

I know its impossible to relax and stay calm, I found that when ever I started to get really stressed I would say over and over... I have a strong, healthy baby growing inside of me. I just kept saying it until I had calmed down.

I am thinking of you hun and I hope its just a bit of muck left over from implantation! Would definately recommend staying away from special cuddles though... its not worth the stress!
