I guess I am one of the statistics as I have very very extremely low numeracy skills. SO bad infact that I cant help my 12yr old with her maths as it is just too hard. Failed 5th form maths when thru to 6th form cabbage maths and failed that class too I think I missed out on the maths gene.

I have a tutor for Lesieli now as she is in the low scale in her year and needing to get to average and higher for college next year.

In the flip side her literacy skills are excellent and is reading/comprehension and writing is at year 11 level and she is only year 8

yes. i am pretty good, as in, I can work stuff out in my head and could work out that at kmart, the special they had given me (two jackets at 25% off each) was less of a special than the one advertised (one jacket full price, the other at 60% off), within a few seconds. However, i ended up having to show the girl how to do it on her computer as she couldn't work it all out manually.

also at school the kids need calculators to work out simple sums and multiplication. Not too bad, but most are unable to see if they have made a mistake. And as for grammar......shudder.

that's cause all the kids these days only know text speak!! ok so I'm a typist and a bit perfectionistic when it comes to spelling and grammar, but getting an email in text speak is pretty odd!

I would say i'm quite good. I too can work out simple things like % off (often have to do it for my friend when out shopping). When I was at school my maths was quite good and was ahead of my year all the time in primary school.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Maths has always been my strongest area, I can do most things either in my head or with pen and paper. For my engineering qualifications I had to get into pretty heavy duty maths including imaginary numbers I sh*t you not (is that bad grammer?)
I try with the grammer but it doesn't always work. I always spell everything out in full on text messages, just can't get the hang of this text speak, must be too old.

Maths used to be my strongest subject. I LOVED CALCULUS (geek!!!) I dont think I would be as good at it now though. As for grammar and stuff, I am with cuppatea.....all my texts are spelt out correctly AND I use punctuation. I have been told by a much much younger friend that she can tell I am old....I use predicitive text

As for my posts on Ohbaby......my brain works way faster than my fingers (or is it the other way round) and total rubbish flows freely on the keyboard.

I was always one of those kids who could do my math homework standing on my head in the dark. Of course I found it abysmally boring and quit after skipping half my 5th form classes, falling asleep in the other half, and scraping a pass in almost every math subject.

My sister on the other hand, always had to work to keep on top in school, and now she's doing really well because she's learned those skills.

I'm ok at maths, still can't do long division though.
I can add, subtract and do basic percentages in my head. I'm especially good at working out if I'm buying a bargain seems when it relates to money it makes more sense.

I hate text speak in anything other than a txt, and with predictive text there is no excuse.

I've seen Masters and PhD students work with appalling grammar and spelling. I hate it makes the person look dumb even when they aren't.
