Topic: Hospital stay after an elective? Posted: 03 May 2009 at 4:29pm |
Well, I got the nod for an elective after all that stressing about what the ob would say...
next question is
How long did you stay after an elective? I am hoping that being an elective instead of an emergency (and therefore not exhausted after days of labour, and healing from being hacked open in such a hurry) that my my recovery will be quicker, and that I can be back in the comfort of my own home/bed sooner.. With my crash section I went home on day 5, and we are hoping for me to be home by Sunday (c-section on Friday), or Monday morning at the latest... is that feasible?
Also... what do I need to take with me to hospital, since I wont need a 'labour bag' as such?
Oh and one more (I promise lol)
Were you able to have photos taken during the operation? I would really like a few photos to document her birth, and missed out with B partly because it was all rush and panic, and also because we forgot our blasted camera anyway!
Thanks in advance!

My c section wasn't elective, but I have got loads of photos from during my c section! The anethetist asked for our camera and got some really good shots (and some not so nice ones too lol) but they are well worth seeing and I am so glad I have them

I could have gone home day three .. (actually I could have transferred to birthcare the day after), but I reacted to the morphine they gave me on the avo I was going to transfer and ended up staying five days (which sucked big time).
So definately do-able.
Also we were allowed to take pictures doing our emergency, so I wouldnt see why you couldnt in an elective.

Kalyx was my elective c-sec. I had him lunchtime Tuesday & was home on the Thursday arvo. So if all goes well with you & bub you'll def be home on the Sunday
Take something to do, read or listen to as your labour bag esp if you will be second up for the OP, you may have a long wait.
Def take your camera. I have some amazing photos

I had an elective ceaser with the girls. It went really smooth. I only used panadol for pain relief afterwards because I was afraid the morphine would make me ill and I really didn't feel like I needed anything else. I stayed for 5 days in total but only because my milk didn't come in so I was having major problems breastfeeding. I reckon I could have been out of there after 3 days. The first couple of days are hard. But I was up walking around, carrying babies & Showering the day after my c/section.
Jess took his camera and it was fine I have a bizillion photos of the inside of my stomach lol. He also took a recording device so he could record their first cries lol men are so funny
Congrats chic hope all goes to plan

I think they usually recommend a four-day stay

after my emergency c section I was allowed to go home on day 4, but I chose to stay the extra night as I wanted to see the LC again the next morning.
If everything is ok and given its not your first child, dont see why youi wouldnt be able to go home on Day 3 especially if they need the room
Gosh, we never even thougth to get pictures during the procedure... forgot to ask someone to take a picture of DH cutting the cord too.....

I was OK'd to go home 3 days after my emergency. And yep, you can take a camera and video cam in --- they asked us if we had them ready - I said I didn't want to see any of this again (traumatised at the time!) haha.

I was in for 5 days after my emergency, they wanted me to stay longer but I said no I want to go home, so they let me.
I was in for so long because my c section was after 48 hours of labour and I lost a lot of blood and had a transfusion, I also had swollen bowels and had to have x rays, then they thought caden was sick and still wouldnt let us go.
So I got to middlemore on the Sunday night, Caden was born Monday morning at 1.03am and I wenr home Friday afternoon.
I imagine I could have gone home sooner if things hadnt of been so stressfull, plus I was VERY sore and on the pain pump for 4 days It was awful awful.

I was in 6 nights and 7 full days after an elective c-section. It depends on why you are having it, and how it all goes for you. Recovery is still harder, as it's a major operation.
I took a TV and sky decoder in with me. I found reading too difficult with all the painkillers.
Some OBs don't like photos of the actual operation and will allow full access for loads of the baby. Let them know what you want beforehand.
Good luck!

we had a 5 day stay and it was awesome...would do it again in a heartbeat! It was nice to relax and recover etc...and one thing I didnt realise til later was how much blood i had lost and also that Bubs was coming off morphine that I had been on....was nice to be in hospital for that and also for the first total sleepless night when the nurses came and took her, and then wrapped her in and kept checking on us. Also gave DH the chance to catch up on sleep before bubs arrived home...
We have amazing photos from delivery - we told specialist we wanted to take them and so he announced when she was about to be pulled out...still my favourite first photo EVER! and i didnt get to see her much til they had done apgar etc but DH kept on taking photos...which I didnt realise til later on...those are gorgeous to me also.

I'm a little bit gutted now I didn't get any photos! i didn't even think of that! But TBH I don't think DH would have handled taking them, I don't think he enjoyed looking over the blue shield.
