Hi all, I'm a little in two minds about sending Jake to kindy (if I can) vs just staying at daycare. So wondering what others would do in the same situation.

I've decided on the private kindy if he does go, as they do 3 yr olds in the morning so he could still have a nap if necessary, and they would be happy with him just going two days.

He is currently still going to daycare two days as he was in before I had Morgan, and I'm going back to work part time in a few months. DH will look after Morgan initially for the 3 days I'm working. Then they will both be going 3 days from june 1st. Jake turns 3 at the end of june. So IF I can organise it somehow that someone else has him half of one day (my mum or dh) or slightly change my work hours (possible I think), do I send him to kindy for two half days and keep him in daycare for 2 days, or stick to 3 days in daycare?

Obviously he is already settled in daycare and Morgan will be going there so that is the logical choice. And it also means we can keep going to playcentre once a week, which he loves (but there wont be many over 3s still there as most are starting kindy), but I probably wouldn't keep going if he had two full and two half days in daycare/kindy, as I'd like one day at home.

The pros of changing are:
- He will be with kids that are going to the same school (our daycare is a little further away - long story)
- Cheaper
- Half a day with just me and Morgan at home probably (a break for me, and quality time for her)
- Different equipment / people / kids / learning experiences for him (?)

Assuming i'd be happy with the level of care both provide (have read the ero report, met teachers/observed a session, talked to mums in the area), what would you do?

Yeah I agree with Bizzy

My boy makes friends in about 30 secs so I don't think the whole intro to school thing is that important really.

I don't know much about kindy myself, being a foreigner and all, but could you maybe send him at 4 if you are still keen on the idea then? or do they have to start at 3. I should probably think about/look into all this, especially as there is a kindy right opposite our house.

I don't know if you can send them later. I assume so, that was somehting else I considered .... ie. dont worry about it now and see how I feel next year.

Nikki, I am thinking of NOT going with the kindy idea and then reassessing that decision later, maybe when James is old enough for kindy. I dont think you HAVE to start at 3 (well 2.5 in our case). IT will all depend on space at the time.

I personally wouldn't bother with kindy .. for one taking kids to different places would be a PITA

Elias and Issy will stay in their dc till they are school aged, that way they don't have to go through all the settling in period again and they have continuity of care.

I did it .. 41 kgs gone! From flab to fab in under a year LFs weight blog

Nzpiper, yeah I deifnitely agree in your case with not going, and it would be good if you have the option to send them together (I don't have that option as Morgan turns 3 the week Jake starts school).

Yes, agree re continuity of care too. And wasn't looking forward to settling him somewhere else.

I guess my only real reason for considering it is I'm worried about jake not knowing any of the kids when he starts school (daycare is in kumeu and we're in west harbour, so a good 10mins away and all his friends live out that way) . My parents moved every 3 or so years so I know how horrible it is to be the new kid with no mates! I went to 2 kindys, 4 primary schools, 2 intermediates and thankfully only 1 high school!

there are other ways to make sure they know someone in their class though. Last year gabriel played soccer and one of the kids on his team was in his class too. this year two of the kids from his team are in his class.

i have just changed daycares for Ty as i was extremely unhappy with his last one ...he will be turning 3 in may and kindy doesnt take him till 3.4 so i was deciding to start him in janurary so he can start new year new school.....i also am changing from daycare cause i want him in a school atmosphere and also i cant afford daycare.......but the prob i have is half day or full day? he still sleeps but they said that they have nap time for full timers if they require....but also thinking doing year of half then year of full time so then he is ready and its done gently..........i was worried about taking him out of 1st daycare when he wouldnt be in new one for long and he is super shy at the moment.........but i think he is young he mets kids really well.....routine is hard but the other daycare got me so angry that i put my son first and his education.........its all such a hard decision.......good luck with it
