Hi there. My DS was a reflux baby and we were able to take him off omeprazole at 13 months and thank goodness he is fine now (touch wood). He does have eczema but we're able to control this.

I kept DS dairy free until one and then introduced dairy in the form of yoghurt, cheese, milk on his cereal and of course the dairy in the ingredients in some of the things he eats. Haven't had any problems with this until the other day when to save money I swapped his daily two bottles of formula (just normal formula, not dairy free) for cow's milk for two days. He was very irritable and difficult to handle, had some diarrhea and I think one of his eyes was watery. To complicate matters he did have a sore throat and cold at the same time so I can't tell if it was a dairy reaction or if it was his cold. What do you think?? Have you had any experiences similar to this?

I discussed this with the doc and he said to trial the cow's milk again and see what happens. However I'm pregnant with twins (!) and very tired so don't want to do this experiment any time soon. The doc also said some who are lactose intolerant can have small doses of dairy and this may be the case with DS.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

It looks like my DS3 has this, he was allergic to dairy but at 18 months his test to dairy (skin prick test) was negative so we starting introducing some dairy to him in baking and then cheese/yoghurt. He was still on script formula so didn't have milk to drink and was having rice milk on cereal. Whenever we tried cows milk on his cereal he would get a very runny bum, we would leave it a few months then try again and it would happen again so we stopped and just stuck with the rice milk on his cereal and he just stopped having any formula to drink so we didn't need to worry about a replacement for that(he was just over 2 when he stopped having his formula though).
We've just been back to the allergy specialist and he suspects he is lactose intolerant, I didn't think he would be cos there is lactose in yoghurt (there is none in cheese) and he seems fine with that, but apparently there is more in milk and the lactose in yoghurt has been fermented which makes is slightly different to in milk, so we are now trialling a lactose free milk and that seems to be going ok. Apparently once they have had an allergy to dairy there is then the chance that they become lactose intolerant.

I'm not sure about lactose in formula but maybe they way it is processed makes it easier for them to cope with than milk, or maybe there isn't as much in there.

The lactose free milk was $4 something for 1 litre so I would guess that formula is probably the cheaper option to that and I think you can get a lactose free formula as well but not sure how much that is.

ah yep and that is right what the doc said about some kids can tolerate small amounts but not too much, it's because lactose intolerance is to do with a defiency in the enzyme to break down lactose, so give them too much and their body can't cope with it, but small amounts they can process.

I know someone who is lactose intolerant; not too much so all she needs to do is take cow's milk out of her diet and leave everything else as is. You could try that. All standard formula is based on cows milk so it's an unusual thing to happen (as far as I know) and probably best to do that again sometime when he doesn't have a cold...trouble is, everything's going around and he's probably teething his molars now too
