Well....my boy (check out thread in first babies if you want the full story) is allergic to cows milk protein..so it's off to the specialist.and Neocate for us..he said 'modern technology is wonderful, you got some good advice'

lol meaning the Plunket advice was crap(dangerous even) as lactose free would have been crap(thanks Marisa and Emma for helping me) so Neocate and allergy specialist it is..

*sigh* i hardly drank any milk but had lots of cheese..would this mean next pregnancy i need to avoid these things..he said it could have been part of the reason i was having such trouble with him feeding..

KA, sucks about the allergy but it's great you've got the diagnosis and know what to do to have a happy lil boy. Hope things go smoothly for you from here.

Eeek, I drank SO much milk when I was preggie. Made me feel less sick, made heartburn a bit less, and I craved cold milos Can lots of dairy products in pregnancy possibly make bubba develop an allergy? I didn't know that...

so i asked him if i could give him more neocate (as hes having 120) which is the level for 3 month old sand he said yes keep going..so does that means its ok to give him 150mls(5 scoops?) he finishes the 120 bottles every time? and did anyones child grow out of this problem..im assuming cause it was so quick and bad maybe he wont:( still at least dont have to worry bout real food for a while..though i suspect they will tell me to delay till 6 months:(

I don't think having cow's milk during pregnancy can cause an allergy, but if you have a history of allergies in your family then there is a school of thought that says avoiding these things can help as they don't get exposed to it inutero, which is why they sometimes advice you to avoid peanuts during pregnancy. However if there is no history of allergies then they actually think it is better to not avoid these things

We had no history of allergies so it caught us a bit by surprise that Spencer has them, oh well nothing we can do but trudge on with it.

yeah Kawwww give him as much as he will drink, they are only guidelines on the tins not exactly what he should be having. The only way you will overfeed is misreading hungry signs for tired signs or not making the formula up correctly. They do normally stop when they are full.

Could you not go see another paed instead? We didn't have a referal when we saw our one, I just phoned them up and made an appointment. Screw paying full price for the tins.
As far as I know they will be insured but probably worth checking your policy or phoning and asking them to make sure.

Your insurance won't cover the cost of the formula as it's a food product not a drug, even tho it's on the Pharmac list - believe me I tried lol! Insurance will cover seeing a paed in private practise tho.

There's no evidence to suggest that consumption of dairy during pregnancy causes/increases the risk of cows milk protein allergy. I did an allergy prevention course with Dr Allen Liang when I was preg with the gremlins and he doesn't recommend avoiding anything except peanuts during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding is a different story, he advocates a dairy free diet while breastfeeding but only if one or other parent, or a sibling of the child, have cows milk allergy. He doesn't recommend it as a "just in case" option as it has to be done under strict dietician supervision to ensure that you have an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals. He does advise REDUCING the dairy intake in the third tri, not as a preventative, but just so that iit isn't so much of a shock to the system when you go dairy free after delivery.

He had some other recommendations too, I posted them in the EBC Allergy section. I followed them with the gremlins and yet they still had shocking allergy problems, so am being a bit more relaxed this time round.

Re: growing out of it, the severity of the reaction does have an impact on how likely a child is to outgrow an allergy, but THE most important thing is observing a strictly allergen free (so in Ethan's case, milk free) diet. The fewer exposures the child has, the more chance is they will outgrow their allergy. Regular allergy testing will be able to determine whether an allergy is lessening in severity. 95% of children with allergies do outgrow them by age 5.

www.everybody.co.nz go to the Bulletin Boards section and then scroll down to Allergies. The thread is near the top coz I bumped it up for someone else last week.

I honestly think some of us allergy mums know more than a lot of health professionals, there's a huge gap in knowledge between the 'experts' (immuology/allergy paediatricians) and GPs, Plunket nurses, even hospital regs and general paeds. Jan Sinclair, who is one of NZ's top paediatric allergy specialists is working with Allergy NZ atm on a huge education programme for GPs and for general paeds in smaller areas where there is no access to allergy specialists to bring them up to speed.

yeah i do too..honestly the doc handed me a thing that was printed out and it was just what you guys had told me.. he is referring me to the specialist on the 15th(1st available appt) and until then I'm paying 85$ a tin for the Neocate and freaking out as to whether this will affect my boy forever , whether he has a life threatening allergy or just a wee problem..and feeling guilty for giving it to him and a bunch of other things:(

I've certainly learnt stress makes my OCD worse:( so I'm trying to chill out.. as you know I'm a worrier but I'm working on it:)! I'll have a look at that page after i've had some breakfast(and my first V for two years)

Thanks again Emma...you have been a great help.

Goats is a no go as the protein chains are so similar to cows milk that most kids who are allergic to cows also react to goat.

Kawww. Hugs to you, must be hard. I really reccommend Tamariki Ora services.. As apposed to plunket. If you get the same ladies i have they are awesome. She lives in Pap so you should. Give them a call. Mine nurse is Ngahina, and my other lady is Ngaire. While Ngaire is older she is really nice and i just love Ngahina shes the nicest lady ever! Also she is a registered nurse.
