Asthma kids...

Sign in here: I know there are a few of us here with asmatics. I am wanting to know how you cope with the changing of the weather??

We had 2 nice days at the start of the week and then it got cold again. Arrgghh I noticed the waterfall clear streaming nose on friday with Alize and knew it was coming and sure enough I was hit with an attack this morning. I nebulize him with his ventolin up to 12 puffs and he responses well but the poor boy still spends the day trying to run and plays as he never sits for a second all the while doing a great redition of darth vada or a baby with whooping cough. Any ideas on how you cope??

 

 

yep james as well he just wont stay still even whens hes have a attack sorry no advice hun bit bg hugs the doctor has just put him on seretide which is a long acting ventolin sicne he was on this his wezzying gone down

jack hasn't been 'diagnosed' as yet because he hasn't been in hospital since his first attack at 18mths.
but he's been using his inhaler abit lately with the cold weather. he seems to be getting colds non-stop. i've noticed i'm using mine alot more too...really must remember to use the flixotide!!!

yep james is heaps better using his spacer thank god he use to scream like i was killing him so not nice

Amy, sorry to hound you but in my OP I said he was getting the tell tale streaming nose on Friday, should I have upped the ventolin dosage then?? He wasnt wheezing at that stage but I knew it was coming. He didnt have a cold or flu it was just the asthma nose I call it lol

Kels, I would, well that is what the nurse told us.
She said at any sign give him more. We were under the impression that Ventolin was a bad thing and only used in "severe" cases. She put our mind at ease and explained what it is really for....helping open the airways.
For us too, just like the Paed & Dr, it is trial and error. (Hopefully not too many errors)EVERY single child is different and asthma has so many forms. It took us a while to up his ventalin, it took a severe attack during the night to realise they NEED it.

If Tyrell gets a runny nose we literraly up ventalin that day and just keep an eye on him, if it helps we continue, week before last he had a cough....not like his normal asthma cough, so I thought ok Flu is coming, uped the ventalin and he didn't change, didn't get worse but it didn't get any better. We worked it out that it is just the change of weather and he is fine without it. This is our trial and error.

For us when we had the Flexotide (sp?) introduced, we had a huge improvement within the week we started it. It is slow release and I thought, nah aint working then all of a sudden he improved.

We made sure we kept our a regular appointment with the Paed. He would say trial this for ... a month, so we would go back in a month. That way we were able to ensure the correct diagnosis and plan of action.

You go girl. The more info that is out there the better.

I have always been happy to dose up with ventolin but only because I have nebulised kids at work with it etc.  I have even written care plans for my patients of all ages but when it comes to my own, all that info seems to be lost to me. I have been trained in Asthma as a speciality in my practice nursing days so I know the anatomy and physiology of the disease and pharmacology inside out  but boy when it is one of your own and your on the other side of the fence it can be very overwhelming. I just get beside myself sometimes and ring my mum, friends, healthline anyone who can sort of reign me in and put it into perspective for me as I can freak out and not know what to do..... Meh im sure we all have "those" days lol

I am very overwhelmed with it, we have no family history of it at all!
I freak every time Tyrell has an attack....it is awful and so heart renching!

i was told after the age of two which was quite annoying as james was being treated as a asthmacti not that i wanted the dignonse but its good to have name to what was wrong if you get what i ment

Alize was officially diagnosed with Asthma at 10mths old as the Gp wanted to put him on a preventor because he was having 2wkly attacks. Saw a paed and they were happy with diagnosis.
