They also sell a magazine called TummyTalk for $10 which is excellent - has loads of useful info and tips and positive birth stories. I met the women who run their antenatal active birth classes last year - really liked their approach. They're not interested in pushing a homebirth message, they just want to educate as many women as possible about active birth and hope they utilise these skills whereever they chose to labour.
ETA - has your MW talked to you about optimal foetal positioning? There are lots of things that you can do (and avoid doing) that will improve the chances of your baby being in the best birthing position by the time you go into labour. The spinning babies website has loads of info about getting baby to turn around into the optimal position. |
Thanks for those links -will definitely look into that. I really do want to get bubs into best position possible beforehand. ALthough having said that DS was actually in the perfect position right up till the day I went into labour. When I saw MW at 2pm for a SnS he was in the right position, but when I got to the hospital at midnight that night after being in labour for about 5 hours he had suddenly turned posterior 
I know I'm not hard core enough to go without the epidural completely, but I do realise that the epidural played a part in what went wrong with my labour (just by slwoing it down I guess). That's why this time I want to wait till I am a few cms further along. I guess that means I need to learn some coping mechanisms for the early stages.
I am feeling far more motivated about teh whole thiung which is good. I am trying to make it my little challenge-maybe I will even plan a little reward for myself if I do manage to push bubs out/.
On the other hand I am also going to stay very realistic, & if things don't go as planned & it does ned in anotehr emergency c section then I am not going to feel like a failure because at least I had a go.
Thanks everyone for sharing all your stories (either for or against the vbac), & please keep them all coming. It's helped a lot getting all the different viewpoints

im the same, I want to try without the epi but I do remember how much it hurts LOL I definately do not want an epi before 7cm BUT I also want to be at home for as long as possible so hoping that I will quite far along before I make it to the hospital anyway (or even dont make it at all...).
Glad you have made a decision.. fingers and toes crossed that you have a better birth experience this time around!

Argh-vent ahead....
DH spoke to his mum last night on the phone. She is in South Africa, where C sections are almost the norm (I kid you not). Over there electives are allowed (for whatever reason-you're paying so you decide), & once you've had one C section you automatically have another-no choice for you.
Anyway, DH was telling her we haven't decided what to do yet (even though he bloody well knows I've decided to try for VBAC), & so MIL says "Oh I think she should just have the C section-it'll be so much easier". DH got off the phone & told me & I said "well that's 'cause your mum is just lazy"-which he didn't appreciate at all. Fair enough.
Anyway, lately MIL has been saying some things that really annoy me (including saying that the name I want for our baby is a TERRIBLE name, & if we use it she will never call her that, & instead she will call her "Cloe Catherine"). This has made me even more determined to have the VBAC just to prove I can do it & prove her wrong. Probably sounds a bit childish but she is just driving me batty at the moment. Thank goodness we don't live near her anymore....
Right, vent over.

Just a quick update: I had an appointment with my MW this morning & it went well. I really love my midwife. She is just so supportive & easy going.
The specialist had sent her a letter saying I was gointg to opt for the elective C section, so when I said "um, actually I'm going to give natural a try" she was pleasantly surprised & actually gave me a hug which was sweet. We discussed everything & she said I should go see the specialist again on 23 March & we should book a C section for 41 weeks. She said she doesn't think I should be induced, because it doubles the risk of rupture, so if I haven't gone into labour by 41 weeks I should have a c section. But she said she will start doing stretch & sweeps from 39 weeks so hopefully I go into labour spontaneously. She said I mustn't worry about anything-it's all still completely up to me, & we'll just see how labour goes. If everything is running smoothly then that is great & I'll deliver vaginally, but if at any point it starts going pear shaped or isn't progressing or I feel like I don't want to carry on (for whatever reason) then I can have the c section. She said it is totally up to me & I am in control, & she will just be there to support me.
I feel so much better after seeing her, & much more motivated to have the vbac. The thing I hated about DS's birth was how out of control everything felt (I am such a control freak). After talking to my MW I feel like this time is going to be completely different & very controlled. I know I am in good hands so I am just going to go into it with an open mind. If all goes well & I get my VBAC then great. If it doesn't go according to plan then I'll have the c section but it is not going to be horrible & stressful like last time because they are going to keep a close eye on me. And at least I will know I did my best.

Oh and she said bubs is head down but head not in pelvis yet, & said bubs is nice & small (not too small, but not a monster-which is GREAT!)

Good on you Odette, its great when you have a good MW.
Couple of things that I'm doing to hopefully get my VBAC is I've been taking 5W and EPO since 35 weeks cause its suppose to make everything soft and stretchy and my MW has recommeneded acupuncture from 37 weeks- 37 and 38 week appts are to get the body ready then 39 weeks is an induction appt. MW reckons she has great success rates with it. I'm pretty much willing to try everything.
I've heard some great VBAC stories lately so I'm just focusing on them.
Hope it all works out for you.

Just wanted to pop & post quick. I will write up my birth story when I get a chance, but for now I will just say that I got my VBAC in the end (on thurs 22 Apr) & it was AMAZING. I can't believe I was actuallly considering having an elective c section.
Giving birth naturally was the most wonderful experience I have ever had & although it was much harder than an elective & scary at times it was just mindblowingly wonderful & rewarding & happy. I am even looking forward to doing it again (yes, you heard right-I loved it so much I want to repeat it!).
It wasn't a "perfect delivery" but it was wonderful nevertheless & I will write about it soon. All I can say to the women considering a vbac is don't be afraid-it is such an empowering, beautiful thing & no-one should be afraid of that.
I'll post full story when I get a chance.
