Out and about with your little one: a summer adventure guide
Whether you're planning a beach trip, a visit to the park, or just a leisurely walk and picnic, getting out and about with your little one can be fun and stress-free with the right prep and gear!
Stroller:
Invest in a lightweight stroller that’s easy to fold and pack up and down. A breathable sunshade and a reclining seat are great features for sunny days, also a cup holder for your iced coffee!
Baby carrier:
A baby carrier or front pack is a lifesaver during busy seasons of life. Choose one that provides proper support, is easy to put on and off, is suitable for hot weather, and can be adjusted as your baby grows.
Car seat safety:
Ensure your child's car seat is properly installed and meets all safety standards - crucial for any time of year, but especially if long road trips are on the card this summer. Make sure a professional who is trained in car seat safety has checked the installation and your baby or child meets the weight and height requirements.
Sun shade:
Protect your bubba from the sun's rays with a stroller sunshade or a beach tent. Look for a shade that provides ample coverage without blocking airflow. Babies and young children can’t regulate their body temperature as adults can, so it’s important to make sure they don’t overheat.
Sunscreen:
Always keep sunscreen on hand for babies over six months (sunscreen is not recommended for under six months). Choose a broad-spectrum, SPF 50+ sunscreen and apply it generously to exposed skin. Reapply every two hours, or more often if your child is swimming or sweating.
Nappy bag essentials:
A well-organised nappy bag with the following essentials will help all outings go smoothly…
- Nappies and wipes
- Travel changing mat
- Extra clothing
- Baby food, snacks, and formula if needed
- Feeding essentials (bottles, sippy cups, baby spoons)
- First-aid kit
- Sun hat and sunglasses for your child
- Blanket for picnics or shade
- Insect repellent (if heading to an area with bugs)
- Hand sanitiser
Hydration station:
Don't forget to pack enough water or milk for your child, especially on hot summer days. Staying hydrated is crucial.
Plan your route:
Before heading out, plan your destination and the best route to get there, factoring any stops or rests you’ll need to make. Consider the comfort of your child, like whether there are shaded areas or resting spots along the way. For very young babies, it’s recommended they’re not in capsules for longer than approx. 30 minutes, for older babies with better head and neck control, that increases to 90 minutes.
Flexibility is key:
Be prepared to adjust your plans based on your child's mood and needs. Sometimes, you may need to hot-foot it home, other times a spontaneous stop at a playground can be the highlight of the day!
Sun protection:
Dress bubbas in lightweight, long-sleeved clothing (natural fibres like cotton or linen are best) and a hat that protects their face, neck, chest, and back of neck. Sunglasses can protect their eyes from glare and harmful UV rays also.
Enjoy nature:
Point out trees, birds, and flowers, and encourage children to appreciate and explore the world around them.
Safety:
Keep a watchful eye on your child at all times, especially around roads, water and busy or unfamiliar areas. Hold their hand when crossing the street, and make sure they understand the importance of staying close to you.
Cool off:
On scorching summer days, make sure your child stays cool and comfortable. Keep them hydrated, and take breaks in the shade. Water play is a great and fun way for little ones to cool off!
Capture the memories:
Be sure to snap some photos and capture your precious moments of your outdoor adventures, these are the days that will make up their childhood memories!
