Read MoreAh toddlerhood, that age where your child loves to get as messy as possible, refuses to eat vegetables, and enjoys licking the handle of the supermarket trolley. It can feel like a losing battle trying to keep them healthy and germ-free.
This is also the age where many children begin kindy or daycare and start to socialise more, meaning they’re more likely to pick up winter bugs going around. While these illnesses will no doubt strengthen your child’s immune system, it’s good to have some tried and tested remedies up your sleeve to support them when they do get sick. Please seek medical attention if you are worried.
Nutrition
Get fruits and veggies in any way you can to make sure they’re getting plenty of nutrients over the colder seasons – this could look like a green smoothie, a big handful of greens added to pancake batter for ‘hulk pancakes’, veggies grated or chopped very finely into a spaghetti bolognese, or zucchini chocolate muffins. Vitamin C will also help them fight off ills and chills, so try adding high Vit C foods in as well such as citrus fruits and Kiwifruit.
Rest
Plenty of rest and sleep is ideal, and they’ll likely sleep more than usual (silver linings hey). Now is probably not the time for endless activities and outings, stay home and rest, have lots of cuddles and quiet time. If congested, they may benefit from humidifier to moisten the air and a soothing chest rub is always good to help clear stuffy noses. Slightly elevated bed and/or pillows may also help.
Use a saline nasal spray such as Otrivin Baby and Kids to help clear nasal passages, this one is a non-medicated, isotonic saline nasal spray that gives a metered dose and is suitable to use for toddlers. This nasal spray also contains castor oil which is known to have moisturising and emolient properties to moisturise irritated nasal passages.
Supplements
Consult with your medical professional on what’s right for your child and correct dose, but things like zinc, vitamin C and vitamin D may be beneficial.
