Read MoreEating finger foods is a great way to give your baby more independence at meal times. From around eight months old they’re becoming more curious and adventurous in their eating so it’s a really great time for introducing new textures and flavours. Eating finger food also helps to develop a baby’s all-important hand-eye coordination skills so they become more adept at avoiding those missed mouthfuls!
This stage is all about new tastes and textures so it’s helpful in the long term to introduce your baby to as many of the recommended first foods as you can. We love the Wattie’s® Little Dippers™ range of delicious baby dips which you simply serve with baby’s finger foods – there’s no need for a spoon! Packed with veggies and legumes, they’re a source of protein and are suitable for babies from 8+ months.
You’ll find them on supermarket shelves in three delicious varieties: Butternut & Kumara Hummus, White Bean, Peas, Avocado & Spinach and Curry Cauliflower Hummus. To serve, you just need to squeeze a 60g serving of baby dip into a bowl and offer to your baby along with finger food dippers such as soft cooked veggie sticks, cooked pasta shapes or toast fingers. It’s important to remember that food preferences and tastes will vary from family to family, so serve what suits you and your baby.
Another great idea to encourage your 8+ month old baby in taste exploration is the delicious range of Wattie’s® Stir Thru Cooking Sauces. These sauces are designed to help baby try a variety of flavours and be able to join in with the family at meal time. They’re available in three yummy varieties: Mild Butter Chicken with Veggies, Tomato with Herbs Mediterranean Style, and Creamy Cauliflower with Herbs. Carefully prepared with vegetables, herbs and mild spices they’re tailored to a baby’s more delicate tastebuds. They're also low in sodium.
The NEW Wattie’s® Little Sprouts™ plant-based meals for baby are also perfect for a meal on the run or to take camping this summer. Filled with tasty veggies and legumes, these delicious meals are also vegetarian friendly and a source of protein. The range includes, two 6+ month products and and two 8+ month products.
They make a home-made meal really easy and quick to prepare - which can be a life saver when you have a hungry baby in the house! Simply heat an 85g serving of Stir Thru Cooking Sauce as per the instructions on the packet, and stir it through your baby's portion of cooked meat, vegetables, rice or pasta in an appropriate soft texture and shape.
Enjoy this exciting stage of new experiences with your little one. This age is all about exploring, and that includes how far they can throw a cracker across the kitchen, so be ready for well, a bit of mess!
